In regards to SF5 I’ll put it like this: I’m liking what I’m seeing so far. I take it as a good omen that if Guard Crush is in that Capcom will not force comeback mechanics or hopefully be smarter about them. Maybe have KI style comeback mechanics where you just get meter or access to a special ability as opposed to one retarded super that does like 40-50%. And it looks like it has Cross Tekken links and I’m okay with that.
Big questions:
Parries? Ryu does have his Denjin back but it could be like Gouken’s Denjin or it could be the 3S Denjin. It’s a coin toss. I doubt we’ll see 3S Parries.
Netcode? Hoping for rollback/GGPO here.
How can Capcom fuck this up? Are they going to force a Gem system, have a DLC Groove system, on-disc DLC characters, announce a retail updated edition 6 months later? There’s a lot of things that they can fuck up.
3S cast? I think Alex has a good chance because he frequently pops up around the top of fan lists for characters they want back. I’d like Q, Urien, and Necro back along with Alex. But this is Capcom and all those shitty SF4 models of 3S characters are right there… They could justify bringing back the Twins again because it would be cheaper to develop. Two characters for the price of one.
I’d like to see next to no SF2 characters. And I’d like to see some new characters with new and interesting kinds of gameplay but hopefully they’re not retarded.
Same.
I’ll give it a shot.
For me the interest is more on the creative end. I want to see 50% new cast. I want to see a story after or at least concurrent with SF3 series. I want to see other 3S characters in there.
Not that I care about ‘story’ but I mean some kind of progression or change in characters.
Also something I noticed instantly was how graffiti-esque the title for the game looks. It’s very ‘street’ (forgive me inner city people). Which imo is one of the major bits of attitude and style in the SF3 series.
I’m hopeful but if it’s just flashy SF4 with guard break I doubt I will care that much, 3S isn’t evaporating so there’s nothing will change for the 3S scene.
I actually hope that they don’t put parries in SF5. It’ll be better if they try something new and different instead of going back and lifting mechanics from older games.
The character models look so similar to SF4 that I’m expecting them to just transplant half (or more) of the cast wholesale. Probably leave out the less loved characters, and a few that are loved just so people will clamor for them and have a reason to buy Super Street Fighter V. Not hopeful at all.
It would make the game too difficult to commentate for, based on what I’ve seen of the commentary in sf4 and sfxt. They seem to want to provide the exact answer in every situation and I can’t see parry leaving them room to say much more than he should’ve parried low or blocked. I think that would stagnate commentary and, really, that was the only way they were able to hype up a lot of otherwise boring shit. But maybe I’m just being an asshole about it, most likely, and they’re going to keep it out for some other reason like “artistic direction”.
Gotta have a ps4 or at least a decent Personal Computer too. For some of us that’s a real investment to play SFV.
Tbh I’m a little excited to try it, even though my hopes are pretty low. Don’t know if I can justify the expenditure. Haven’t been an avid gamer in general for a few years now.
“I don’t play videogames, I play third strike”, seems to be a common approach to managing adulthood and keeping up with the time consuming hobby.
I used to say that at parties. “I don’t really play too many video games bur I do play 3rd strike”. I didn’t go to too many parties anyway and most of my music friends had their own little guilty pleasures, though, to say that about what 3rd strike is too me might be a bit of an understatement.
Rowan, I’ll send you my old gpu so long as you can afford the ram.
Well and L4D2 also. Because shooting zombies with friends is cool.
But yeah not anything else. Sometimes I buy games on Steam sales but never play them. I own a bunch of fighting games on 360 and outside sf4 I suspect my total time combined is like 20 hours for all of them.
The reasons why I think SF5 will have parry is because:
A) RYU has a parry move in Omega Ultra, and people have been speculating that Omega is a testing grounds for certain moves or mechanics, who knows .
This also suggests multiple supers will be back since many characters have 3 bar EX moves which resemble previous super combos.
B) in the gameplay trailer, there is a scene where RYU is frozen in time in a parry stance, while Chun Li jumps in on him. I believe this is the clue we are waiting for. You would parry jumpins most often in 3s, and a way to catch your opponent off guard is to do a jumping double hit move, which is what Chun Li does, and RYU gets hit, it’s an inside joke kind of.
C) Canon wise, why would RYU forget how to parry? He took down the illuminati with that shit. (Or Alex did, whatever)
D) SF4 had a dumbed down parry mechanic. The whole SF4 game was dumbed down to make it more accessible. I read this once, and one Of the directors (may have been Ono, I don’t remember) said that he wants to make another advanced SF game like 3s was.
RYU is frozen in the same parry animation during Chun’s double fireball (also another very often parried move in 3s). AS WELL AS DURING CHUN’s SUPER aka the Daigo parry
Parry for SF5 pls
One last thing:
Many of the normals shown are from 3s!
RYU:
J.mk
Chun:
S/twds.RH
SAIII esque ending to her headstomps
Why the fuck is UltraDavid so against 3s? I saw his and Chen’s breakdown of the trailer, and both of them are completely against parry or characters like Q, Remy and Tweleve coming back. Fucking money making shills don’t want to see their scrub friends disappear from the tournament scene and have to re-establish the FGC illuminati with grass roots players who have no respect for them and how they sold out the real FGC probably.
He kept reeling in disgust at the mere mention of those things. It was pretty sickening in itself to see such a huge sellout, but I throw up in my mouth every time Alex Valle shows his ugly face.
Maybe because they want to see new and interesting characters? One of the reasons I like the SF3 series is because there’s no other game where you can play such a varied cast. SF4 has since added various characters from the 3S, but I think that was part of the problem.
A lot of SF4 was basically “Hey guys, do you remember playing those old Street Fighter games? Well here’s some nostalgia for you!” There were new characters added, but they were in the minority. Compare that with the cast for 3rd Strike where out of 19 playable characters, only 4 were from previous SF series. Along with parry, EX moves and selectable supers, that’s what made 3rd Strike so fresh and different compared with other Street Fighter games.
That’s what I want from Street Fighter V: not some uninspired rehashing of old games for nostalgia’s sake but a real, sincere attempt at something new. I wouldn’t be surprised if UltraDavid has the same sentiments too (although I haven’t watched their breakdown). Stop trying to make SF5 into 3rd Strike. You’re just going to be disappointed.
Yeah I think Capcom should take a risk. They charged their nostalgia bar for 9 years and really blew their load with SF4. I probably won’t play it either way* but I’d like to see them make a statement with SFV. A fresh cast with dedicated stages and themes instead of another Capcom vs Capcom: dream match plus a couple new guys.
Spoiler
*only because the presence of Chun Li crushed my dreams for an all shoto/evil shoto cast
Taking the greatest mechanic from 3s (and not dumbing it down) and making it part of SFV is a great idea.
Also I don’t see what is wrong with having highly requested characters like Alex, Urien, Necro, Sean, Oro and Q, when they are fan favourites and most would like to see back.
As for completely new characters that wouldn’t be a bad idea, but I also don’t see it being THAT good of an idea either.
SF4 showed us Capcom’s new character creating ability:
Mexican stereotype
Evil KPop stereotype
Evil(er) Gouki
Hakan
Fat American stereotype
Feminist bitch stereotype
Cammy clone
Gouken (we all knew he would look like this)
Only cool character was Seth, and Gill is infinitely cooler cause half his body is ice and he runs the illuminati.
None of those SF4 characters are even close to as different and cool as 3s’s new cast was.
Bringing 3s characters back also makes sense if they bring back parry.
Parry + Guard break = lots of fun and hype. Think about it. The two mechanics are basically made for each other.
