3rd Strike General Discussion Thread

How come you were in Seoul, just travelling?

Was living in Melborourn, Australia 2008/2009 and had no place to stay for like five weeks. A friend was teaching English in Korea just outside of Seoul in a place called Ilsan (I think). She invited me to stay with her so I figured why not travel a bit. Stopped in another part of Oz called Byron Bay for some sex on the beach and surf lessons then took my remaining money to be a poor ass in Korea for a bit over a month.

Didnā€™t see as much of it as I wouldā€™ve liked but was awesome to visit. Koreans were very friendly. Offering to help and translate regularly. After the third day of seeing no white people but my friend, a local stopped me to take a picture with him. Felt like a celebrity. Also first time Iā€™ve ever felt like minority. Good experience.

Haha easiest way to the rock star experience.
So you played with the Melbourne 3Sers in those days?

SF on Korean sticks seems like self-sabotage. That, or the way to turn into Infiltration :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah Mitri, played with the good Melb players. This was just before and after the release of sf4 vanilla. There were some really good 3s players there and a decently maintained h2h cabinet before the new shit hit. Players fell off quickly after that. Spent lots of cash at Bluehouse arcade.

did you ever play pault??

Awwwww itā€™s a sore spot. PaulT was in Hong Kong the whole time I was in Oz but he visited during my Korea trip. Donā€™t know if he still plays. Might have missed my chance to learn from him.

So hereā€™s something interesting for Makoto players to check out.

itā€™s no different than anything else if youā€™ve acclimated yourself to them.

Thatā€™s already the mommy special

random question of the day

It is known that Chun can link SAII after cr.hit farHK. Itā€™s 1999 knowledge.
Hit Confirming that the opponent was crouching is not hard - confirming is easy period, you have a lot more time to react than after cMK or bHP!!!
And while the timing is a bit weird at first, the link with piano is rather easy.
So Iā€™m wondering why, still, even in 2014, even in footage from top Chuns I often see that move hitting a crouching opponent with meter filled and yet thereā€™s no super afterwards more often than not?
Iā€™m not a Chun mainer, what am I missing?

Itā€™s good if you have two supers stacked. If you only have one itā€™s not worth it unless its for the win. Lose fear factor. Which matches are you referring to exactly? All good chun I play will use it especially r3 will full super.

Iā€™m not saying they donā€™t use it, just that the successful hitconfirm rate on that is lower than I would expect overall, expecially if compared to the landed cMK/bHP to super rate which actually give less time to react.
Iā€™m aware of the meter management side of things, but when I see things like full metered Chun hit far HK crouching hit > nothing, then the very next step gets to be a landed cMK confirmed into SAII I get baffled
And I usually observe less care for meter management care on landed cMKā€™s

Of course not maining Chun I donā€™t have the proper mindset to judge every situationā€¦ thatā€™s why Iā€™m asking, I like to get to understand the game betterā€¦ and knowing about other characters also gives bits of needed help in fighting against them

(my observation comes from watching all the major japanese tournament vids and most touzainsens/vsgc/other stuff - which Iā€™m aware is less than 0.1% of your direct experience with top level 3s of course - but next time I come across some top chun sets with some times to spare Iā€™ll point you the time codes)

Who is a better counter to Twins? Dudley or Makoto? I still like Alex, heā€™s fun as hell to play, heā€™s not garbage, but the Twin matchup is really bad for him (I think he has a way better chance against Chun in comparison) and so if I fight a decent Twin player Iā€™m going to switch it up. Itā€™s really bizarre but with Alex I tend to play aggressive but with everyone else I play defensively.

I think Makoto is a bit better against them because of (obviously) the TOD but also cr.LK is pretty good against Yang frame traps. But her AA game isnā€™t nearly as strong and itā€™s harder to land a Karakusa on them because of their tiny hitbox and fast wakeup time. Dudley has a stronger AA game and kindaā€™ forces them to approach him on the ground but I donā€™t think he has an answer to Yang frame traps other then throw out a LP SA3 or buffer-parry into his Launcher.

That Makoto combo above looks cool, but I canā€™t figure it out. My execution is getting better, I landed like 4 double fukiage combos last night, but I canā€™t land that one at all. Is there something weird Iā€™m missing, the fukiage always comes out too late even if itā€™s LP.

Also, as someone who is torn between Dudley and Makoto and in general, Iā€™d be inclined to side with Dudley against the twins just to avoid that command grab loopā€¦which Iā€™ve never seen anybody online use, weirdly.

It is not a combo it is just a setup to meaty with fuki on landing.

itā€™s just another guess but different looking.

watch any good remy and you will see a lot of that same situation.

Oh-, I shouldā€™ve figured it was too good to be true. I guess I was doing it right then! Some of the time at least.

Hate to fill this thread with random tutorial vids, but this is also a pretty good reference vid for those who want to look up the specific double Fukiage stun combo for a character. I already posted it on the Makoto sub-forum, but that place is pretty much dead, so:

Iā€™ve got an unrelated question that Iā€™ve wanted to ask for a long time: I havenā€™t really watched too many 3S match vids, and I feel like Iā€™m lacking knowledge of how the game is truly supposed to be played. What are your ā€œmust watchā€ Third Strike tournaments/leagues from the last 10 years or so? Itā€™d be nice if they featured good Kens and Chuns.

any game versus danisen rank 10 and above is usually good
