3rd Strike at Super Battle Opera: history and stats

UPDATED after 2009 results!!

A consuming task indeed, I compiled all the past brackets and made some stats.

Tougeki '03 brackets - need help on Ruu’s team name, on some characters used by certain players, translation, and who the hell was on team ???. This was the hardest one because there’s no footage of the earlier rounds to double-check things.
**
Tougeki '04 brackets**
Tougeki '05 brackets - missing a couple of names
**
Tougeki '06 brackets** - couldn’t find enough info on the last chance team

Tougeki '07 brackets

Tougeki '08 brackets - need help for 2 of the last chance team

Tougeki '09 brackets

in general I had some trouble with Chinese players. The only one who was consistently there (same symbols) has been written with 2 different spellings around the net (Xiao Liu / Xiao Yi)
Feel free to correct any mess-ups in names or character selection and I’ll update the brackets accordingly

So far 325 (!) different players have entered 3rd strike SBO finals, in the span of 7 editions

NEW!
Players with most wins throughout SBO history ('04 to '08)*

  • note: I don’t have neither I can find complete footage of the first edition, matches played in 2003 are not counted since I don’t know the scores of most fights; I will update with '09 results as soon as I get the DVDs. If complete 2003 footage indeed exists and someone has it, it would be very appreciated to have the exact scores, or at least any help you could give to me.*

very nice work

Here is China’s SBO qualifier site.
Based on the information, here are the player’s names.

BANANA??
??? (Ken) = i y? d yn = The Cloud that Loves Rain
? (Yun) = Pio
HYDE (Chun-Li) = HYDE

RSFC.ORG
MAN (Chun-Li) = MAN
? (Elena) = Hoi
??? (Yang) = Wo Mei Lung

I had never met anyone with a family name Wo, but I know a lot of Lung. Perhaps he decided to put his family name at the end because it sounds better as a username. Also, when I went to visit my relatives at Hong Kong (Kowloon), there were arcades every three to six blocks but only one of them had 3S; and I had to ask the owner to turn it on for me. Perhaps I was visiting all the wrong areas but I had never seen anyone talking about Street Fighter in general. I saw a lot of people playing King of Fighters and Gundam Seeds though. I am amazed that there is an SBO qualifier at Hong Kong. Do you know where it was held? I want to visit there next time.

Anyways, great work! If you have any other Chinese words that needs to be translated, just post them up. I am glad to help.

Wow just looking at the '03 brackets, a few interesting things:

  • some players that I thought were relatively new, or unknown until recently, were actaully already playing… ShiroItachi is here, Eriho’s Hugo…etc.

  • no Deshiken?

  • Boss and KO teams up with… Danna? ewww, maybe he was considered as a good Dudley at the time.

  • A team consist of Nitto, Roah and Daigo cant even get by the first round.

  • No Mester…

  • A team of Nuki, Tokido and Match lost in the second round.

  • Izu OCVing the final 4 and the championship made him a household name for awhile, but even till now I still have never ever seen any footage of his teamates playing, Kiyomatsu(Ke) and Ueno(Ch). Weird.

they actually got OCV’ed by Yukino. (in that picture she was teaming up with Nuki and Match for the 1st G-Up tournament.)

Daigo lost on the first round too on sbo2, but 1st round sbo2 footage is not complete. Since in SBO3 it was nuki who carried Daigo up to the final, I wonder if the decisive match vs K.O was actually the only SBO match Daigo ever won

Yep Kiyomatsu and Ueno are shrouded in mystery, expecially the latter since Kiyomatsu at least is wel known for his sick A3 Guy

yep Nuki def carried daigo…just look at daigo’s placements in past SBO’s he lost first round in the first 2 sbo’s

and yes Daigo vs KO was the one fight in the WHOLE tournament that daigo won…funny it just HAD to be KO :-\

anyways good stuff man

its crazy to see Umezono, Matsuda, Shiroitachi teamed up in 2 consecutive years as well as Nitto and daigo (amazing how they couldnt get past the first round)

who does yukino play?

Look at the bracket…

or here

Spoiler

Chun li

lol he put it in a spoiler thing

izu FLAMED his way through sbo1 with makoto. shit was mad funny. whatever happened to that guy?

wow, i had no idea america has had a team every year. pretty cool shit.

ouch at KO and Boss. They both been top 4 more than any other player, and both haven’t won yet.

KO’s curse is confirmed, he will never, ever win SBO, lol.

where can I get this DVD as play-asia isnt selling this year SF3 for some reason

Nice job, HH. I put together some brackets myself awhile back from various internet postings. I can’t guarantee their accuracy, but what found was

2005 missing
Aci (OR)
RealNetIdolHorieYousuke25 (HU)
I-Hara (TW)
Zhou Rongliang (KE)

2006 missing (I have these 3 playing Issey’s team first round)
Nekonohi (RY)
Naga (KE)
Hiroken (YA)

They are taking pre-orders now

Great work. I would love to see some stats on the characters themselves.

Mad shit With KO, Is his Curse known Through Japan?

Sad face on Daigo Too…
What SF3LP said… Unlucky That KO Was Daigos’ only win…

Nice Shizzle Hol Horse!!

We needs to win us some SBO.

up coming comedian?

who knows though, if pc sf4 can make online viable, then we can possibly be more competitive with japanese.

KO curse has got to be real. With the latest team of Nuki/KO/RX they had literally the best team of players I can even think up. The only slight possible thing I could think they could do was have KO play Yun rather than Yang. But yeah, they ended up losing to an unknown team (to me at least).

So Daigo was carried through SBO3? So in the overall spectrum of 3s players would you say Daigo is even up at the top? I’ve never really studied his Ken over others, but I always assumed he was one of the best Kens ever.

Also, out of curiosity, did Kokujin really come out of retirement to play in 08?

Great work compiling this. Really interesting to see all the ridiculous teams that couldn’t pull off a win, and the beasts that could go all the way.
