Closers are definitely overpaid. The Rays have kind of shown that lots of solid relievers can be converted into good closers without especially great pains.
That said, the difference can be pretty profound between a great closer and a non-great closer.

Not as many people respect him as they do Mo. He thinks he’s gonna get the Mo treatment in every park, I’m not so sure that’s gonna happen for Jeter.
Mo was an elite pitcher until the very end. Derek Jeter is MLB’s highest paid mascot.
