I think Larry Fitzgerald’s new contract (8 years-120 million dollars, 50 million guaranteed) is going to cause a ripple effect in the NFL. Not just for receivers, but possibly in general. Players like Calvin Johnson (whose contract year is coming up) are going to demand that much money (maybe more), and other position players, such as Chris Johnson (who wants Peyton Manning money, which he probably won’t get). And it won’t be the first tier players making bank, but it might cause the 2nd tier players to make somewhere close to that much money.

Arizona had to do something to keep Fitz happy, or risk losing him altogether. I mean, Kevin Kolb was okay, but he’s certainly not the top-flight QB that I’m sure Fitz was hoping for, so Arizona pretty much had no other choice than to say, “Look Larry, our personnel is pretty average, we admit that. But… here’s a metric fuckton of dollar bills in hopes that you can overlook the mediocrity of our team, despite being in the worst division in the NFL.”
I imagine Fitz’s response to have played out something like this.
