Haha you can’t assume everyone who enters this is going to be free. You’re assuming these people suck cuz they’re girls; come on Steph. Anyone serious about the tournament (this one or the real one that matters) is trying to improve at the game just as much as you are. What matters most in this tournament isn’t who is good, but who is good “for a girl”… sadly. u__u
So if you want to be in the female only tournament, the only qualification would be signing up for the open tournament, or do you have to pass a certain number of rounds?~
Wow, it is a smack in the face to know that almost no street fighter players are females(Although I am pretty aware of that.) I play street fighter all the time with my guy friends, and I hold up pretty well against them. I have never gone up against another girl in Street fighter, and to me, that would be an amazing opportunity to meet other girls that take Street Fighter as seriously as me, and some of the other females in this forum.
Seriously though, from all the things I have heard from friends of mine, this is the layout of female Street Fighter players:
Ryu, Ryu, Ryu, Ryu, Ryu, Sagat, Ryu, Ryu, Zangief, Ryu, Ryu, and maybe an Abel.
Then, from all these players, you will find it extremely rare for any of them to even land a decent combo, or even land an Ultra.
Mind you, this is based off opinion.
What really needs to happen is some girls need to go to the main tourney and kick some ass, and prove that video games don’t need to be male-dominated.
Sheesh, what’s with all the hubbub, seriously?
People think too much into things.
Props to all women who enter the tourney and try their hardest to win.
Too late to change plans now, but what about in the future just having a new players workshop? That way you have a forum for newer players from both genders to play. I mean you have the best players from the entire country there if you could convince a few to talk to the group, show some things, I think it could be pretty fun and beneficial. Then the workshop could culminate in it’s own tournament, that way it takes on a perception of practice. It also addresses the issue of integrating female gamers into the mainstream, if you create their own tournament you really don’t do much to get around the issues of the playing environment cited for motivating the creation of the tournament in the first place.
You sure are hell bent on seeing to that. I hope all the girls looking forward to it can have a good time.
If it’s this hard to sell this tournament, there’s going to be little point in developing more events like it. Most people cannot look past their own insecurities and understand that this is not just a women’s invitational, but a simple exercise in expansion.
The statements made about this tournament are less of a statement on gender issues, and more of a statement about how willing the community is to expand itself. Any possible expansion is going to be potentially embarrassing and uncomfortable for the established players (who liked the pads at gamestop?), but necessary to retain and grow the players coming from SF4 and other newer titles. If the concern is always going to be on the negatives instead of the positives, it says that the scene is comfortable with doing nothing, and relying completely on new releases to survive. That seems fine for now, but it leaves us in a horrible position when the games stop coming. At some point we have to control our own marketing, and the area where we currently have the least market share seems like a good start to me.
Some decisions actually do harm the scene, tournaments that decide to scam players, companies that decide not to support their games… Putting an extra invitational tournament in that category is irresponsible and goes against the very idea of a competitive scene. Similar ideas are embraced by other scenes, not to mention almost anyone who’s ever studied, ran, or been involved in large scale competition. When will we embrace the idea of expansion? or at least stop trying to sabotage it?
I agree wholeheartedly, expansion is something that I would embrace. I can’t speak for everyone, but it’s not necessarily a measure of if I personally support expansion or not, but more about how to go about it. I don’t have any issue with a female invitational tournament, it doesn’t directly affect me and I believe that if it gets some people to play who normally would not participate that can be an avenue to gaining players. My suggestion was merely a way to sidestep the most contentious point for many, while still creating an environment for newer players to be encouraged.
Holy cow you guys are still discussing this i am actually shocked seriously i though evo did a great jobs on the rules section of this toruny realy it seemed to me that they were doing everything in their power to not be offensive. to have some one still be offend by this is kind of weak. i mean it seems like the guys at evo realy just wanted to try something new i mean Blaze blue was shot down so other than ssf4 this is the only other realy new thing at evo I think you should just give it a shot.
Are you Jesus H. Christ?
Everyone gets embarassed just like the first time you go up to play DDR. Attention whore or not…let’s just strengthen our SF game. Either way the best player still wins and that’s what matters in the end.
I don’t think its any more fair to characterize people against this idea as against expansion of the scene than it is to characterize Evo staff as sexist for running this event. If you don’t think its worth your time to address the statements made about this tournament, thats fine, its your event in the end, but I don’t really appreciate being told my opposition to this idea really just stems from my unwillingness for the community to grow.
FMJaugar is right, people against this tournament actually just hate the scene. It has nothing to do with singling women out in the community, coddling newer players, wasting time/resources that could be used for other things, etc. Why did we waste almost 9 pages debating this when it was that easy to explain! Thanks!

Standard operating procedure for evo staff and supporters: if you disagree with anything they say or do, you are against expansion of the scene. Like one of them said in the poll thread, they believe that if they actually listened to members of the scene, evo would be a 64-man tournament at Gameworks (whatever that is). People who disagree are belittled, marginalized, and/or ignored. Just like Apoc said back in 2k4.
Just wondering if anyone else feels like there are people being disingenuously idealistic in this thread.
Just wondering if anyone else is extremely confused on why they decided to call the this tournament a “side show event”?
Maybe, that is just the actual terminology you need to use for that, but I would like some clarification on the matter.
^^’
Where/when did they refer to it as a “side show event”? I think they were trying to clarify that it isn’t going to be just a “side show” but I could be wrong. Honestly I think if you’re a girl interested in playing girls and getting more serious about the game, that’s great; but that’s what casuals are for–not tournaments.
I have met FMJ in real life on multiple occasions and can confirm this to be true.

Q: I’m transgender. Can I compete in the women’s invitational?
A: Anyone who self identifies as female can participate.

Respect. Don’t know why this was unexpected in the FAQ. Evo is in its own league.
I am not TRYING, I AM.
Anyways, it is mentioned here:

:xeye:
You mean it was mentioned on the stream? I still don’t see where they said/wrote that. I don’t care to defend the tournament (obviously) but when I reread the FAQ it actually says
I give them a little credt for trying to be official and not going for the “look! it’s girls playing games!” approach, which most definately would turn into a freakshow… but the fact that they’re making it a full-fledged tournament also makes it a bigger waste of time/resources.
