2008 Election! Vote for your favorite comic book characters!

It is time for the most important Election of our lifetime. Obama and McCain who??? Nah man I’m talking about voting for your favorite comic book characters hell yeah! :looney:

So yeah we have to wait until December until Secret Invasion #8 comes out to decide who wins that pool, so at best this is a good way to kill time… :wonder:

The above was posted by Are_you_okay?! a few months back, in response to Empire’s list of top 50 comic book characters which was… questionable? So I say, why not? Let’s give it a go and vote for Storm / Cable / Sentinel a lot to prove SRK knows best! And of course it’s my job to set up some rules so are list is not well rounded at all… J/K

A few rules:

  1. You can vote for as many characters as you want. I’ll limit my choices to 10 but if you want you can go up to, let’s say 20? If you just want to vote for 1 character, feel free. I would like people to vote for at least 10 so we have a nice list, but I don’t really want to tell people how to vote so do as you wish.

  2. I’m not going to count any votes until the very end so feel free to edit your votes as many times as you want up until the very end. So if you happen to think of someone else from here to the end than feel free to add them.

  3. Voting for characters that didn’t originate as comic book characters - Since this site has it’s origins as a Street Fighter comic book forum and Matt Moylan along with Udoneko have been really great answering fan’s questions, you are allowed to vote for SF characters. This goes for characters like Buffy, Star Trek, Star Wars and basically anyone that has appeared in a comic book before. Note that you will be voting for the comic book variants of the characters. For example, you may think that Retsu in SF1 was pretty bad ass but in the Street Fighter comic he got his ass handed to him by Satsui No Hadou (Dark/Evil) Ryu when he was a little kid oooh… Speaking of, IDW has released comic books on Obama and McCain so they are eligible, if you can’t vote in the regular election you can make your voice heard here if you want! :clown: Yeah if you work it right, who knows you might be able to compile a list of your favorite fictional characters!

  4. For the above rule artwork of the character doesn’t count. The character has to of appeared in an actual story for them to be eligible. So Cody from SFA3 and who has only appeared on Street Fighter comic book covers is out.

  5. Manga / Mahnwa / Foreign language characters - You are allowed to vote for them if you want. Only since my goal is always to get people into comic book shops, bookstores etc. to support the industry, the manga has to be available in English. So if someone thinks that character you vote for is cool than they can go either a comic book shop or a bookstore and check them out. Also, the character from the manga also has to be out in whatever the English version of the manga is up to. There are occasions where I won’t be able to tell but some of the bigger stuff like Naruto and Berserk I’ll know, to an extent anyway…

  6. If the character you vote for has several human personas please tell me which one you are voting for otherwise I am going to naturally assume it’s the most commonly known character. For example, a vote for Green Lantern I am going to chalk up as Hal Jordan. A vote for Venom I am going to chalk up as Eddie Brock. And so on, and so on. So in these cases please specify who you are talking about.

  7. The deadline is November 30th and the final vote will be tossed up on December 1. Remember, you can’t bitch about how lame our list is if you don’t participate! :wgrin:

I’ll go first. I’ll name my ten choices and I’ll edit in reasons why in a bit… ROCK TEH VOTE!

  1. Spider-Man - Favorite superhero, the reason why I got into comics in the first place

  2. Wolverine - Second favorite

  3. Batman - I like the idea of the character more than the execution. I wish they’d do something with Bruce Wayne a little more like the movies do. Though I do like the way that every artist draws Batman to look differently most of the time. The Batman Black And White series being the best example.

  4. Nightwing - In a lot of ways I prefer him to Batman but there wouldn’t be a Nightwing without Batman, so I’ll place him just under one notch.

  5. Superman - Is it possible for me to like Superman solely because of Morrison’s All Star Superman? I’m gonna say yeah.

  6. Venom, Eddie Brock - LOL ASM #300 had a great effect on me as a kid and I’m not going to tell you that Venom is the greatest comic book villain of all time or anything like that but whenever there’s a comic with Eddie Brock in it I march to the comic book store like a zombie and pick it up. There are villains who I think are greater like Mr. Sinister, Doctor Doom, plenty more but I don’t feel the need to collect all of their issues…

  7. Spider-Girl - Arg Marvel don’t cancel this book and if you do put it in Spider-Man Family please continue to include Mr. And Mrs. Spider-Man, throw us wedding fans an Adamantium Laced bone here…

  8. Deadpool - Always gives me a good laugh and his new series is TOO FUNNY!

  9. Sagara Sanosuke (Rurouni Kenshin) - Obviously since that’s where my net name ‘Sano’ came from. Greatest manga / anime character ever!

  10. Ryu (Street Fighter) - Yeah I’m cheating to vote for my favorite video game character lol! While my favorite incarnation of him is in Masahiko Nakahira’s Street Fighter Alpha manga, he’s pretty cool in Udon’s comic too. Only Udon, please hurry up and have him meet my second favorite gaming character, Chun-Li! They keep missing each other in the book! I’m not expecting them to have babies or anything, but how about a handshake yeash!

Shout outs to a bajillion characters I left out, I had a hard time narrowing down my list to 10 oooh…

That’s it from me. HAVE AT THEE! :looney:

  19. Madman
  20. Doop (DOOOOOOOP!!!1)

I only numbered my list so that it would be easier for you to count how many I listed. It’s not like I listed them in order to quantify my favorites.

Also, even though I have just participated, I have this nagging feeling I will still bitch about how lame our list is. If the right character doesn’t win this election, I think I might pack up and move to Gaia or something.

Have at the what? You need to finish your sentence there, buddy. :smirk:

In no praticular order
1)Bucky as Captain America
2)Doom
3)Darkseid
4)Supes
5)Thanos
6)Norman Osborn
7)Zur En Arrh Batman
8)Luke Cage when he is giving some scrub "the look"

10)Lex Luthor when he is writing DC comics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:GrantMorrison08.jpg)
11)superboy prime
12)Thor
13)Namor

Ah old Castlevania Symphony of the Night quote. Nice voting on Grant Morrison, I did read about him putting himself in a comic book.

I thought it was “Have at thee” with two e’s. Unless you were simply imitating the wack Engrish translation. In which case, the joke then would be on me.

Yeah, my bad.

You are going to do it anyway

Note that so long as different versions of the characters are the same person IE same secret identity just different realities or different versions, I’m going to count them as the same person. Unless of course I get an overwhelming round of votes for one reality / version…

oh come on the All-Star Batman is not even close to the main Batman

See but neither was Batman in the 60s and then we open a whole can of worms lol! If the majority of votes are for ASBAR than sure. :looney:

dayum well i guess you’re right:wgrin:

is Batman a superhero? he doesn’t have superpowers…

Well I can say for example:

BATMAN / Bruce Wayne - 25 votes (including 1 vote for All Star) or something like that.

Ultimate Spider-Man it’s kind of the same deal, unless we get a lot more votes that specifically say Ultimate Spider-Man.

Brubaker Captain America I’m counting as Bucky Barnes.

I’m assuming Zur En Arrh Batman is… Zur En Arrh Batman from a different dimension and not the current Batman in the technicolor outfit…

Arg headaches on day one… :wasted:

Of course he has powers! He can move faster than the speed of a fuse on a bomb man where have you been?

Can I vote Deadpool 10 times? No? Ok fine.

  1. Deadpool: As if you didn’t see this coming. DP is the merc with a mouth and a heart of gold…sometimes. That dynamic is too good.
  2. Spider-Man: I grew up on Spidey. He was kind of a role model for me. He gets hit with the worst luck ever, yet he never gives up on the world. I have to respect that.
  3. Optimus Prime: He died for our sins.
  4. Batman: The first truly intellectual super-hero. When he puts his brain to work, he can defeat essentially any force in the universe. Plus he’s inherently badass. Plus, there’s Kevin Conroy. I think that makes a winner.
  5. Superman: I used to really dislike Superman when I was younger. He was a boring old boy scout with too much power. As I grew older, however, I learned to appreciate him. He’s a man who sees a gray world in black and white. He believes that there is good in everyone, even in the face of absolute evil. He wants to save an unsaveable world. This kind of dynamic lends itself inherently to great storytelling, and a great character.
  6. Iron Man: They say that the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and nowhere is this more apparent than in the case of Tony Stark. He was willing to sell out even his closest friend to do what he believed was the right thing, only to have everything blow up in his face. He managed to be one of the most controversial characters of the past few years, while still remaining popular and loved. If that isn’t a good character, I don’t know what is.
  7. Naruto Uzumaki: It’s time for me to step out of the American comic industry for a minute, and look at one of the greatest crazes among American youth nowadays, Naruto. He wasn’t really my favorite character when I first started on the series. However, as I came to understand him and watch him grow, I liked him more and more. I can’t really think of a shounen protagonist before Naruto that had as shitty a childhood, and yet he truly learns how to come into his own and make something of himself. Watching him mature from the beginning of the series to the latest chapters has been a real treat, and has earned him a place on my list.
8.MAG-FUCKIN-NETO: Maybe I have a special place for him in my heart because he’s Jewish…or maybe it’s because he is one of the most well fleshed out and developed “villains” of all time. Take your pick.
  8. Ryu: OK, OK, I KNOW IT’S A COP-OUT. Even so, Ryu has always had a special place in my heart. He represents his franchise perfectly, and everything from his appearance to his relationships with those around him make him legendary.
  9. Wolverine: Voting for Logan almost feels embarrassing, simply because of his inherent popularity. It’s the vote everyone else is going to have, so you don’t want to do it. But the fact of the matter is, when put in the hands of a good writer, Wolverine is one of the most interesting and fleshed-out characters in the industry. Take a look at Whedon’s Astonishing, or Millar’s current Old Man Logan arc. Absolutely fantastic stuff. Yes, it’s a shame that he’s whored out as much as he is, but I guess that’s what happens when you’re the best there is at what you do.

I’m sure I’ll come up with more later, but it’s a good start.

  1. Cyclops
  2. Deadpool
  3. War Machine
  4. Moon Knight
  5. Wonder Dyke

Nah im talking about the current Batman who lost his mind much better than before but yeah you can count as a regular batman vote

Okay then same deal as All Star, I’ll note one vote for Zur En Arrh along with his regular votes.
