It’s because none of the sixaxis controllers have a common ground. However, to say that it can’t be used in a dual mod is not entirely correct. It can be done, but for the most part, its easier to just say that it can’t be done. Search around for ‘common ground mod’ and you’ll get an idea of what else needs to be done.
Was looking at this http://www.slagcoin.com/joystick/pcb_diagrams/ps3_diagram2.jpg and i thought because it said common they were all common gound, but i guess they’re only common ground for the corresponding colors?
that is correct. i ran into the same problem when i was trying to use a dual shock 2 for my dual mod. would not work because start, select, analog had a seperate ground from the other buttons.
They are common lines for those group of corresponding buttons. Once I get a batch of sixaxis controller boards in the mail, I’ll be able to test out my common ground mod that I got working on a early version 360 controller.
Another thing that just came across my mind with the SixAxis, its wireless. So… won’t switching off the usb data lines be pointless because it still connects wirelessly? So if i have it on 360 mode it’ll still be sending button pressed to the PS3 no?
It doesn’t operate in wireless mode if the usb cord is plugged in.
i don’t quite understand the question. i think it’s time to move away from this idea of using a sixaxis in a dual mod. unless you’re going to find a way to wire it up with a wireless 360 pcb, the wireless thing is pointless right? and before you could even start a dual mod, you would have to make it common ground.
you have two options.
-
follow this thread http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=172666, for a psx & 360 pcb. you will have two cords.
-
buy a cthulhu pcb from toodles http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=162026, connect to 360 pcb. you will have one usb cable. you would switch systems with an Imp from toodles or using a DPDT switch.
u sure about that? I remember my buddy having his controller plugged to his laptop to charge while he used it to play on the PS3 because the cable wasn’t long enough to reach the ps3. So won’t the same thing happen hooked up to the 360?
Well i just wanted native ps3 support without having to deal with PS2 + Adapter (since i hear adapters have lag?)
Plus I have a sixaxis doing nothing lol
you have to turn on the controller on first by pressing the home button, if you were to connect 2 wireless pcbs the assigning the home/guide button to turn on the correct PCB would be the key or you could have a dedicated home and a dedicated Guide button, if the controller is off it doesnt matter if you’re playing with the 360.
so hook up a switch with the home/guide button.
I test several ps1 & ps2 pads with the InPin & Pelican converter I just got in and didn’t notice any lag. according to the converter thread, certain digital ps1 pads have issues. but all ps1 dual shocks have been confirmed to work just fine.
the sixaxis is ridiculous to try and solder. so people buy the adapter for about $25. it has screw terminals for your wires coming from the buttons.
read through the cthulhu thread. you’ll want one too. :lovin:
The pins on the sixaxis aren’t that ridiculous to solder to. Though compared to soldering onto pad contacts like on the 360, then yes it is a lot harder.
I do like the cleaner look if using the adapter, but I rather save money and solder the wires to the pins myself.
^ I’m with you on that not a big issue to solder the wires and get to save a couple bucks.
Screw it I’m going PS2 + adapter now i don’t have to worry about the stupid wireless thing. If my adapter has lag I’m directly blaming you Soarer5 lol.
so anyone have any ideas on how to wire a sixaxis and a wireless 360 controller.
first step involves doing a common ground mod for the sixaxis controller
refer to the converter thread :wgrin: http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=181187
now if that’s just a ps2/ps3 only setup, ps1/ps2 dual shock will be fine. if going for dual mod, you need dual shock 1.
you have to weigh your options. InPin ps3 adapter is $30 shipped from Korea. PS3 cthulhu kit unassembled is $26 shipped, add $5 and you get the MC cthulhu (has additional output for ps1, gamecube, xbox1). You can add 360pcb to both easily for dual mod.
I searched on how to do this but all i found was something about adding resistors. Don’t have a clue on how to do it though can u point me in the right direction.
have you checked out these two links?

the-red-comet,
I just finished the common-ground mod following bencao’s link (as posted by gummowned) for an official ms xbox360 pad …
Here is the picture of the common ground harness
