Probably not the thought I should be having but - these events are going to make a lot of people rich in the next few years - books, a movie or two, may even jump-start or solidify some journalists’ careers.
Hostages got freed and the 2 fuckwits that gunned down the comics are dead following an assault by French special forces. 2nd Hostage situation resolved, gunman dead also.
About the free speech…
… You gringos need to understand that what many countries consider free speech differs from what you consider free speech.
For example, anything that falls under hate speech or promotes violence, etc is not protected under free speech laws.
There’s a lot of speech that isn’t protected in the U.S. under certain circumstances. 1st amendment cases in the U.S. are as simple as they are made out to be.
My favorite part is when anyone on a forum says being moderated for their differing opinions is being denied his or her free speech guaranteed by the First Amendment. What they fail to realize is that the First Amendment only protects your speech from government censorship. Private citizens don’t have to give you shit.
@crucades and @JLALloyd appear to be saying the same thing. I hope things go back to normal and people don’t do assholish things to the mosques. At the same time, peace works more wonders over violence. If shit hits the proverbial fan please protest peacefully Muslim community.
In Europe you can’t say anything racist or sexist…unless it’s against Muslims apparently.
In the US you can’t say anything sexist. If you think otherwise, just try it and see what happens. You also can’t say anything negative about law enforcement, the FBI etc. Just try it, see what happens. Snowden is still hiding because he knows “Freedom of Speech” won’t help his ass.
Not really, something like the westboro baptist church wouldn’t fly on many countries since them are by all means a hate group pretty much like the kkk or any neo nazi.
You can totally say sexist things here in the US. People will give you shit about it but as long as you don’t care what they think, no one’s going to prosecute you. The Snowden incident is something else entirely that has nothing to do with free speech.
Yeah, technically Snowden DID commit treason, but i see the things the government is doing that he exposed as far more treasonous than his actions (which, in his case, I’d be hard pressed to call “crimes.”)
The right to not be shot for just saying something is pretty much universal. It’s pretty much the basis of the right and that doesn’t change much at all from country to country. Even execution just for saying something treasonous isn’t really a thing anymore (see Manning’s trial), and in that case killing over treasonous statements has been dead for about as long as non-ceremonious monarchs in the Western world.
These “differing opinions” aren’t mysterious and can be criticized easily, there’s no reason for anyone to hold their tongue vs someone with a 500 year old opinion on your rights.
