Zulu's Skyscraper Showcase

Unlike my World Tour thread, I’m going to keep this going. Anyway, this is going to focus on my true love: Skyscrapers! I’m going to post pictures of some of the world’s most well known and not so well known skyscrapers along with their heights and a bit of information about them.

To start off, the just opened (today) Burj Khalifah (formerly Burj Dubai). At 2,717 feet tall and 162 stories, it is far and away the world’s tallest structure.

Empire State Building | 1,472 ft | 102 floors | 1931 | New York City

The mother of all skyscrapers. You say the word ‘skyscraper’ and this is the building people think off. Nothing can compare to this building’s importance.

Good shit Zulu!

Aqua | 858 FT | 87 Floors | 2009 | Chicago

A truly groundbreaking building. Tallest building ever designed by a female architect. A visually moving building. Though it’s just a box, it’s truly a stunning building.

I really like the Burj Dubai’s design, too.

The Burj Dubai does look amazing, but it just seems to me that they stopped making floors and just kept building so that they could overtake the tallest building record…

American International | 952 FT / 290 M | 66 FLOORS | 1932 | NYC

Originally constructed as the world headquarters for Cities Service Companies, the American International Building at 70 Pine Street has been looming over Lower Manhattan for decades. Until the completion of the World Trade Center in the 1970’s, this tower was the tallest in Lower Manhattan for 40 years and once is again (until completion of the new WTC).

The tower is a beautiful brown limestone which transitions to white at the top to a (copper?) roof and subsequent communications spire.

I’ve always liked this tower a great deal and really wish that its once public observation deck was still open. Apparently now it is a perk for AIG executives.

The slenderness of the tower, combined with its coloring, and spire cap are all positives for me. Hugh Ferriss would be proud.
