Zangief throw advantage?

Okay this is strange, i was playing a zangief online and when i would cross up with a dp or tatsu, we would both go into throw at the same time and every time zangief gets the throw where as i dont. and watching the animation my char (ken) gets a small way through the throw animation then is suddenly grabbed by zangief and gets a head cracker. im wondering if this is just the 50/50 throw thing, or does zangief always get his throw when ken goes for a knee bash while he is trying to throw also?

That sounds like a rollback due to online lag. Gief does have good range on his throws, and furthermore is able to throw you while standing, in the air, or even crouching(something no other character can do), not to mention his two command throws. Basically trying to ‘out throw’ Gief is probably going to work against you more often then not.

I hear ya, I find that Dee jay does the same thing. Although my throw timing could be slightly off it usually is on point though when dropping out of the air from a dp oh well ill just not try to throw gief or Dee jay out of dps

That definitely does sound like a tad bit of rollback. However, I wanted to poke in and throw it out there for those who don’t know, that command throws out prioritize normal throws. So if you both use a throw at the same time, Gief’s 360 will get priority. Just something to chew on.

this is true, however i am getting the normal throws spammed on me from Dee Jay and Gief…although i have since come under the assumption its network smoothing cuz thats the only way i can think of seeing my ken grab them then a blip later i get thrown

Is it normal to get thrown when you can see your sweep going through their legs?
That happens a lot to me online. I just wanna know if that’s okay, or can I not trust what my eyes show me.

That doesn’t sound normal to me, unless you’re trying to sweep a Zangief player doing a Lariat.

That is definitely lag. In an ideal situation, you wouldn’t even see the sweep come out, you’d just get thrown.

That’s the impression I was under, makes me think that online is everything we thought it was.

Could someone explain how a tick throw works, as in does it work like a link or is it just timing based. When I try to tick throw online I get thrown, and when my opponent goes for the tick throw, I can only soften the throw.

Am I inputing the throw as I hit the ground, before, split second later?

when you get tick thrown wahts going on is they are doing the throw and then usually hitting you once and throwing again, this is because they want to keep you in block stun after the throw to set up the next. the best defense would be to counter throw or reversal them

i main ken and i suck at counter throwing so i usually try to do a reversal dp i start the motion as im in the air and time it to finish as i hit the ground ( i dunno if im doing it right or its blind luck) but usually i can get the dp out.

another thing you can do to break it is if they arent crossing you up get a light kick or punch out while your crouched to throw their timing off and make them back up

if your really good you can throw them back when they try to come in and throw you again. and that usually involves “pianoing” the throw buttons for your charachter to hit the very small window of throw opportunity you are given after you recover from the first throw.

tick throws can be beaten, its difficult but like i always say it can work in your favor too if you use it against another person

You beat me to it Barnaby, but I wanted to add that it’s timing based. If you’re using Ken’s j.Short for example, it would be right as you land, j.Forward a iittle after you land, and j.Roundhouse a little after that. You just get a feel for it from experience. Just remember that you can’t throw or be thrown during hit stun or block stun.

Can you jump away from it?

It may be obvious, but differen’t characters have different throw ranges.
Gief’s normal throws have a greater range than Ken’s, so that could be why you’re getting grabbed more often than he is.

Take a look at this site:
http://nki.combovideos.com/data.html#distance

It’s not certain that the Super Turbo stuff applies to HDR, but there’s been no indication of Sirlin changing throw ranges.

By the way, I put this stuff into a spreadsheet so that you can sort it and whatnot:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=p_KmoktkzSieKGJYokIS2QA

BOOYA!

Nope. Except for Akuma’s Raging Demon, all throws will grab you before you can jump. Reversal attack or reversal throw are your only options.

Wow, that’s an awesome spreadsheet BV!! I like how it’s sorted by greatest range to lowest range as opposed to character sort on NKI’s site. Thanks man. = )

Poor Fei Long. LOL

I’m sorry but how do I interpret the data on the spread sheet?

What if he is within my range too though, it seems like my tick throw attempt should work?
