Can anyone tell me how to approach the Ryu match-up? Fucker keeps spamming DP’s and it works!
Even though I like fighting Ryu, losing to waves of them is not fun. I didn’t see a Ryu section in the front of the thread so I guess there isn’t one yet.
The majority of Ryus I’m fighting generally jump in to sweep then back off and hadouken. Pulling off lariat close to him is dangerous because the tip of DP knocks me right out of it. Green Hand will sometimes trade. Once I corner him, he flies to the other side of the screen. xD
Someone please help me out with this match-up, I’m seriously lacking.
I’ve been experimenting with different characters in Training Mode, and though I won’t release all of my research to the forums just yet, I have found a couple of things you guys might find interesting. (1) Being close to Chun while she is standing or crouching, you can fit 5 low shorts into hand. However, the low short (x2), stand strong, stand short (x2), hand combo is the more damaging option. (2) When Chun, Blanka, or Honda are crouching, you can’t combo short into strong ? or is it just me? (3) While crouching, Blanka and Honda can get hit by a stand strong (x2), stand short, hand combo. This is a 2F link that deals an unsightly 255 damage, 310 stun.
There’s so much more to learn about his matchups, and so I’ve been putting a limitless amount of energy into Training Mode. Oh, depending on how busy I am, I might post another combo-consistency video sometime in the near future. Well, till next time!
First play better ryu’s the ones you are losing to suck and if you follow what I say you should be able to beat 100% of them. Jump in to sweep is only used by really low tier ryu’s.
Step 1. AA lariet if ryu jumps in at you stay crouched till the very last moment and while still crouch hit ppp. If this trades follow up with ex gh. This stops all ryu’s jump’ins.
Step two. Block on wake up. If he’s going to dp great free damage for you. Let him dp then punish. You can spd a blocked dp or lk to exgh or sweep. Lk to exgh has really good range and is what I use most the time for punishing random midscreen dp’s.
Step 3. Don’t get hit by fb’s. First get some meter then work your way in on him larieting/ fa through the fire balls till your in range to punish a fb on reaction with exgh. Ie bull dog him into the corner. If his rhythm is predictable jump in hp to lk exgh works if you can predict the next fb.
Approach this match like Rufus, you’ll think twice about doing stupid shit. Guy’s punishes are very similar to Rufus’ in that you’ll get drained of 1/4+ life easily for making mistakes. Crossup j.lk will beat lariat if you do it too early. This is something you might want to practice in training mode to beat. It’s like that ambiguous j.hk crossup bison/dictators like to use. It’s tough timing, even with c.lariat. No, you can’t jump in on a smart Guy, his normals will beat you. You have to walk forward the whole time, or throw in some empty/short jumps like going up against Sakura. This really sucks b/c he’s got lightning quick slides. So this is what I mean by approach it like Rufus. You can’t jump in on Rufus, you just have to walk up on him. If you stupidly walk up on Rufus, you get hit by c.hp. Same thing for Guy, except you have to be prepared to block and punish slides and such with lp spd if the Guy player spaced it wrong. If they try to do the flip to grab/elbow thing from a distance, c.mp is your friend.
Once i use the c.mp, they stop the full screen elbow drops and start baiting to mid screen to slide.
And someone needs to explain to me how his run attacks are safe from a standard throw (3frame)… Went away from the spd (2frame) punish bc i thought maybe my 270 is a little slow. He always dashes away. How about some cr. jab (4 frame) spam for my frustration, he still dashes away. Forced to throw out a “random” exgh to catch the dash back but this is pure guessing bc once i do it one time, he can hurricane kick or just block n punish. His buttons seem really good too, CH all day on o_s lp/lk
Guy has slowly become the worst of the new cast for me trumping Juri and JK spamming Adons.
why are you losing to guy my friend. Listen guy has to come to you and still then none of mix ups are safe especially against gief. He doesn’t have alot of frame advantage and he only has one way of knocking you down, and that’s his air command throw and still then it’s risky. You don’t even have to use command throws to beat him, you can just beat him with solid footsies. how is adon a bad match up for you, i mean, i’m not saying it’s super easy but if they are doing neutral j.hk, but like if they are doing it going up, block then wait for them to come down, they can’t do shit just grab them. The only thing that’s slightly scary about adon, is if the player has good hit confirms, then but still the only poke that he has against gief is his st.hk, which is good but no where near as good as giefs st.mp. Also, for adon they can bait out lariats by doing his j.mk which can cancel into a jaguar kick then it won’t become safe just block and punish.
also, spamming jabs is not going to get you no where, so just calm down my friend and look at what your doing and look at what he’s doing. Record your matches then come back, later on when you have calmed down and i bet you will see holes in his game that you can beat. juri , can be a problem getting in on, but once you knock her down she has no options but that parry shit, which every does then uses her j.hk to go up, bait that shit and punish accordingly. Use cr.mk sparingly to go under are fireballs that straight across. Cr.mk beats alot of her jump in’s, if you are feeling good about using gief’s cr.lariat. ex hand here is so fucking good because at a distance, she can’t, i repeat can’t throw fireballs if you have the reaction for it. just don’t jump at her too much she will kick your ass for that. walk her down and kill her .
Also a big help is if you know how to lp spd, while moving back and forth, walking them down. They will always get caught, because the range is very deceptive.Especially adon, because he’s going to want you to jump, don’t jump, at all, only after untechable knock downs that is and if you have him in the corner DON’T CROSS HIM UP … KEEEP HIM THERE. He doesn’t have a way to get out of the corner with out eating a mp, or hp headbutt lol. This goes for guy too. Those match ups aren’t that hard, you just have to solid and not random, adon damage output is too good to be random and guy once he knocks gief down in corner then it can get pretty tough… his corner mix ups are god like
Thanks bro, and yeah, most of the Ryu’s I fight do suck and I manage to beat a good portion of them (though Dragon Punch in itself is another story, lol =P). Online is all I have right now and that’s fine, at least I get a few solid Ryu’s here and there.
Funnily enough I do better against solid players than I do against randoms.
Peaceful Jay’s Colosseum: Super Street Fighter IV [PRO LOBBY] (September 28 2010) ? Fast-forward to 1:15:00, and you will find a Zangief player named HCM Batman playing against some online masher by the name of CaliPower . The Zangief player here obviously doesn’t know how to react to fireballs with Green Hand online. Fast-forward to 1:37:00 and you will see that HCM Batman really needs help with the Adon and Abel matchups. But these are some fine examples of things you should not do against Ryu or Adon…or Zangief…or Abel.
Wheel kick depends on the distance they do it from you. S rh stuffs most wheel kicks if you do it really early and exgh beats all of them on reaction. It’s kind of like scissor kick where if it’s too deep you can spd/ultra on block but most good ables will only use it safely so not deep enough to spd.
LOL. Dude, that clip is a perfect example what I’ve been harping about. Abel is not free for Gief anymore. That shit is very competitive. Juicebox was throwing out random u2’s instead of holding it as a “bargaining chip”. He hit 1 of 3. (And is it me but did Gief backdash a half a screen away on the 2nd one? LOL. And he jumped in splash so how was he able to escape???)
Anyway. Vance made a good read/guess in round 3 after the step kick. JB could have command thrown and won but he went for HP to meaty the jump and got punished.
Well its online anyway and Vance is a god so I’m pretty sure he’d destroy in a FT10, but still. Abel Gief is VERY competitive now.
With part the backdash Gief is air-born, but hit hitboxes are very low to the ground and they get moved by Abel’s hitboxes. I am guessing Juicebox delayed it for a split second, or was waiting for armor hit or SPD or something. It might have just been that brainless’s active frames occurred after Gief’s backdash hit frame 9.
You know you might be on to something…I used cr.mp in the Elf matchup and to my surprise it seems to beat both tortilla throw and tostada splash but that is only if you are not waking up.
Either Juicebox was waiting for Vance to land, or he actually let go in time and Vance was just safe after doing Splash so low. Juicebox actually times his releasing U2 if he knows you will backdash. I say this because he has done it to me after making a failed attempt the first U2.
Does the height of splash alter anything recovery wise? I thought any normal attack in the air caused a 4 frame ground recovery before anything except throw-techs can be instigated. So Vangief should have been vulnerable to Abel’s U2 for 13 frames after landing (I have no idea how fast Abel travels or how to figure any of that info). Is this incorrect? Just curious.
