Zangief Strategy/Match-up Thread

Hey guys, I had Keits sticky this matchup thread because it’s much more relevant than the previous one. The old matchup thread is full of outdated information going back to when the arcade version first came out, so it’s not very helpful anymore. Try to keep new matchup questions to this thread if you can.

thanks.

im actualy hafing hard times against good hondas becouse of there mixups with the streight jump + hp my punishes work but he can control the movement of it. it beats lariat clean and keep me from getting close some more taktiks against it instead of only faar standing HK… wouldbe great

i am not sure if it is common knowledge but you can kick lariat the second half of blanka’s ultra when it is rolling on the ground. it beats it clean.

i cant wait to try it.

on blanka , i start a match moving backwards and jab him out if his ball and if he does the up ball you should be far enough away to jab him out of that too. eventually they stop doing any ball attack and try to slide which is a free spd if you block it(just like cammys drill) or you jump it(your usually close enoughhowever you jump). You can jab him out of ex ball too.

I’ll definitely be going into training mode for this…

Usually I wait until the Ultra is done and then I EX Hand for the knockdown.

@blanka did you guys read the first page?

its punisable with ultra on block and on long range either with block–>ultra OR if you hafent enugh life to block with lariat mentioned earlyer no need to test working and proved

I knew it was punishable with Ultra and EX Hand, but I never tried to Lariat it.

its mentioned here a lot earlyer  i guess it was renegade whow mentioned it but im not sure

Even though I made this thread, I haven’t been looking through it much lately to be honest…

I’ll skim through it later and add more info to the original post if need be.

I don’t recommend jumping in against good Sagats, trade = ultra or f+HK (that kick alone does more than you think)

I also don’t get #2, is there some special trick or timing to this on reaction? I try to EX green hand after I see Sagat’s HK come out but it’s still too slow to hit them.

They should bring back Zangief’s crotch grab that he had in SSF2T… it would work so well on Sagat. After his balls get busted, he wont do those high kicks no more.

Yes, you shouldn’t jump in on good sagats too much. It should be used every once in a while to break your pattern. I didn’t mean for it to be the main tactic.

As for SPDing the HK, it’s not on reaction. It’s a bait and almost psychic SPD. Footsie to bait the HK and you can bait it out.

Oh sorry RedEye, I mean #3, doing EX green hand on reaction to their HK. I never seem to be able to hit them.

Punishing Sagat HK is key, and if I need to get this down to progress with my game

im not very good against honda but few tips i got.

drop down butt attack: after blocking, you can Ultra, or SPD. just do it quick. EX butt is quite ez because it doesn’t fly far enough to cross you usually.

jumping straight up with hard punch: far standing HK at about his landing.

use straight up jump with headbutt when u are at mid to far distance to make him use ex flying head. honda use that for anti air, so if he mistakes you for jumping across, geif’s headbutt will crush it at right point, headbutt needs to be toward geif’s falling motion.

if you see him do ultra, do lariat. if you are not too far where lariat will finish before ultra hits, you can totally crush his ultra.

If you can punish with an LP spd, I see no reason why you would have problems with ex green hands or even why you would choose that over LP spd. Just use that.

If, however, you can’t do LP spd, and have a hard time with ex green hands, that’s a different issue. There are two things you should know. First, it’s a bait, not on reaction. Learn the opponent’s comfortable zone for fireballs. Know when you’re inside it and bait it. Like the LP spd I said before, it almost has to be psychic in excecution. You see him nudge and you do it. You have to do it earlier than the LP green hands. You basically have to step in during the knee and you stuff him completely.

The second thing you should know is what to pay attention to. Start watching his front leg instead of watching sagat’s body. His front leg is ALWAYS what you should be looking at. It dissapears, he’s going to HK, or on rarer occasions, f.mk. Against some rare players, this will also be a signal for a kara move (careful). If his feet get closer together, it’s a high tiger. If his body drops, it’s a tiger uppercut, or low tiger shot. They should be easy to tell apart, one has his back to you, the other has a flaming fist coming at you :P. If both legs dissapear, he’s tiger kneeing. But if he’s doing that, you screwed up. There are few reasons why sagat should knee you unless its a punishment for something he will capitalize on.

Come to think of it, I don’t think anyone’s mentioned this yet… I wonder if this is sopmething other people do.

Oh, another option, instead of lp spd or ex hand is simply do s.hk. Bait it outside of his range and you can land it.

The only solid (safe) options are c.jab buffer to ex greenhand or wait for it to whiff in front of your face then s.mp. S.hk is good for beating it pre-emptively or sometimes they whiff and you do S.HK and they try to do another normal then they will get hit.

Yo i kinda need help… my worst matchup using gief seems to be E honda. yeah. People are catching on now and turtling with jump HP land hp i cant seem to beat it. if im going for crossup when they are recovering its usually an EX sumo splash and i get owned and then its back dash and back to the turtling. its really hard to lariat on reaction to the sumo headbutt… esp EX i have no problem with reg sumo splash i just grab them right after its done. but i can never get a good crossup on ehonda

You can harass Honda’s wakeup way more than you have been. All of his potential reversals are slow enough that you can get free safe meaties (ie meaties timed as early as possible), you can cross him up and make him either block and lose his charge or ex buttslam and get punished for it.

Also, you really need to stop doing random hands. I know they work sometimes online, but even online where it can be hard to time things, you still end up taking a lot more damage than you deal because of that. Offline I’d be doing low short xx combos instead of just throws.

I’m pretty sure you can catch him with EX hand after blocking a headbutt. You have to do it quick though.
