Zangief Strategy/Match-up Thread

Willx - thanks for your PM on my matches - I don’t have enough posts to reply to your PM yet.

hmm sounds promising, gonna have to give that a shot… better than my current strategy of block/pray anyways.

Even better buffer lp land after the s.jab to crossup.

hehe, i wonder where you got that idea from?

Some stuff I found from nicovideo.

No problem, hope that helped.

Worst videos of my life.

I know he wants to be thorough… But Do I really need to watch him Ultra Ryu Ken and Sagats uppercuts of ALL DIFFERENT STRENGTHS!

Wow, you can Ultra Ryu’s sweep point blank! It’s only -14!

The Super armor canceling part at the end was neat, but it seemed like it was added on to the video from somewhere else.

Awful annoying music too.

There were a few neat setups that I wasn’t aware of. But I guess he could have done without the obvious ones or the repeated SRK punishes.

The ONLY setup I had to go back and check frame data for was Ken’s hurricane kicks.

Then again, basically the only Ken I’ve played is Dr Chaos, which explains why I don’t remember blocking EX hurricane kicks much.

I appreciate the concept, it’s just too long of a video.

Blame the japs.

Easy rule of thumb. If something leaves someone at -1 or worse, and they’re close, ultra punish.

Also, some of those punishes are a little misleading. Yeah, you can punish Vega’s down-toward+roundhouse with ultra from point blank range, but at the range where any reasonable player will use it (ie even just 1 frame’s worth of distance outside of point blank range), it’s totally safe. Same with Ken toward+mk, Chun’s hazanshu, Gief far rh, Boxer’s regular dash punches, Sagat toward+rh, Dictator scissors, Dictator psycho, Fuerte slide, Fuerte far rh, Rufus spin (only unsafe if he keeps holding toward), Viper’s ex knuckle, Viper’s regular knuckle, and Akuma’s demon flip slide.

Wish he didn’t do every version of every dp, but still, overall a fun watch.

so there’s this akuma at ctf that knows the 'gief dash forward punish for dive kick…so after sweep, he’ll position himself to do like deep dive kick, so all you can do is block.

well that’s all i can do…dunno the punish for it…backdash gives him a free s.rh. Lariat sometimes trades (depending on timing) but usually doesn’t, so the trade-off isn’t worth it.

and wait, i thought chun’s hazanshu was always punishable!?

dudeeee where did u find that video, its so EPIC !!

They’re all -1 on block except for mk which is 0 on block. So you can only punish it with a reversal ultra/super and only if she does it so that she lands very close. I find the smart chuns will just jump after it. The not so smart ones will try to sweep.

If Akuma goes deep, crouching lariat trades into banishing flat. He’ll stop that when he sees how much of a trade in your favor that is.

is finally here. This is one is all about the basics and applying o-s to Zangief. The next one will show that option selecting is useful for everyone else, too.

Holy hell man great video. That’s gonna help a lot of players level up quite a bit.

All these vids are good shit I dont play any people so I love to see what tricky stuff people have come up with. I really like the fadc greenhand but it’s bs to have to use meter to make that special function the way it should anyway.

I liked especially hearing about the cammy and akuma un-escapable throw setups I would hate to run into that in a tournament match without knowing about it.

You know what’s pretty sweet? Crouching jab option select crouching strong against Blanka in the corner. Blanka’s always trying to ex rainbow roll out, right? Well it’s invincible on startup, so you can use that invincibility to trigger your crouching strong to knock it out of the air. Yay!
