I’ve only recently started to get comp against good Honda’s, but it doesn’t seem lopsided either way to me so far.
i’m pretty sure i have my game plan all wrong. But i have a tough time pushing honda into a corner.
If i jump, i mostly get ex headbutt/st.fp’ed
If i walk up, i get cr.lp xx hands, cr.lp xx hands, or st.fp/rh, or sometimes nj.fp.
Gief sweep gets owned up for free.
if i dash lot of the times i get cr.lp xx hands on reaction.
I haven’t had much success with st.rh. but i could be using it wrong.
Glove is ok, but again, cr.lp xx hands stop me from doing glove too glove.
I’ve noticed honda’s hit box is a little weird. You have to stand a noticeably closer than say vs a shoto in order to get a jab spd to land.
quick questions against ryu
do you even try to crossup on ppl know how to reverse dp? or do you try ambigious crossup with knee instead?
For after blocking ryu’s cr.hk, do you lp spd depending on the distance or just use ex gh everytime?
Mix it up a bit. REALLY deep crossups, you’ll get punished once, sometimes twice if you wanna make sure they’re good at it, (And to season them) then early empty jump block on other side after the crossup, they’ll whiff dp, punish with ultra or whatever you want.
Against DP happy folks, the usually get knees unless I got momentum going…then they get splash. As well I try to do “obviously poorly timed” jumps, which as JMerc said are really well timed safe jumps/short jumps and use as bait…
- :bluu:
Cross up empty jump is really good against characters who are really hard to safe jump on and whose DP’s seems to come out right and beat you crossups like Cammy.
Any player who’s skilled in doing crossup DP’s this works too.
Crossing Cammy sucks.

The big change is the Ryu number. This is because Alex Valle has totally blown me up each of the last few times I’ve played him. I’ve always had trouble against Ryus, or at least since I came back to the scene I have, but I never really had occasion to think it was an actually bad matchup. I think the way I’ve been losing to Valle is redressable to some extent; I still need to get low short combos more consistently, I know I can play better footsies, and I know I can take better advantage of him as he’s getting up better. This is why I’ve listed the matchup at only 3-7 instead of the real number Valle’s been getting me at, which is more like 2-8 or even 1-9.
Another character I’m not sure what to do with is Akuma. Ed Ma and Shady K showed me something retarded yesterday: meaty demon flip throw option select dragon punch. All of Gief’s reversals can be thrown, so don’t bother, and if you backdash he has option select dp coming out in case of that. You can jump toward out of it and the throw and dp will whiff, but sometimes they didn’t do dp, and sometimes they did demon flip kick instead. Ed said that he wants to start just doing dp on reaction. He’s doing a flip throw so he doesn’t have to worry about followup combos, he can just buffer down-toward down-toward and press p if he sees a jump or backdash. I tried unthrowable lariat, but it didn’t work for me. I think this is because they do the flip throw without it being super meaty; it doesn’t need to be meaty to beat all of Gief’s reversals, and it shouldn’t be meaty if they do demon flip kick instead, since a meaty kick trades with lariat while a non-meaty one beats it outright. I guess I can try to do the unthrowable lariat a bit later, but he can then do it a bit earlier instead (or flip kick instead) and beat me that way. And I don’t think that timing guessing game is one I’m going to win very often. If I can get unthrowable lariat to work better then these meaty games are just crappy instead of retarded, but if they can start doing dp on reaction then they’re back to retarded. Gonna have to see how this plays out.
I also listed Dictator as 6-4 cause lately I’ve been doing well against him, better than 6-4 but considering that I had it at 5-5 before I didn’t think I should place it any higher. Gief’s jumps are so good against him imo.
BTW I still haven’t played Tony, so I can’t really change that Seth rating yet. I’ve theory fought up a bunch of new ideas I want to try next time, though.
His X-Box red ringed. If I find the time to get to Cali, I’m gonna play him a bit.
Oh btw, I’d like to set up some matches with you and Juicebox Abel if you’re down. Him and I are about even, in tourneys he tends to counter pick me with Sagat if he loses the first match. He’s actually my roommate if you’re interested. He’s in Tucson for a week but when he gets back, we should set something up.
You down?
I don’t have a console, sorry dude. If you guys come out LA-way or if I go over there, I’d love to set something up.
Hey man gg the other day, I would like to get some more matches in against a good gief. I tried adding you but your list was full.

great guide helped a lot
I would just liek to say from the bottom of my heart…
I hate you WC guys that have actual arcades to play people at…
If I want to play - I’m stuck online or scouring for a once a week type deal thru SRK…and I’m sold on considering Fighting games as two genres now - Online and Offline…my recent play in MW2 has convinced me that the lag I get so annoyed with in SF4 - persist elsewhere (OH MY GAWD I SHOT DUDE…watch replay wtf the gun never went off 0_o).
But from the bottom of my heart…I sooooo hate how much easier it is for you guys hehe.

Me, SNK and Juicebox are making a trip out to Cali sometime soon. Details will come soon as we have them.
We have an arcade that has an SF4 and no one shows up. Instead, everyone comes to my house.
And damnit my list is full? That blows. Time to clean up shop and kick some people off.
Gg man. I thought you had me, those mix ups are so nasty.
Agreed, it is bull. And even more lame is that it gets cold as hell + mad snow upper east coast. C’mon Chicago, Detroit? Once that temp drops to like 9 Degrees, nobody is going outside to any arcades for 2 months.
least you ahve arcades…we got bowling alleys :arazz:
First time I saw a “Candy cab” was the Gamestop giveaway for SF4…and that was still just a picture…btw those thigns look horrible, how do people play on them? The joys of being the size of Gief.
At least since SF4 has died out from the casual scene, the online comp has improved as the scrub Ryu’s have been weeded out.
On topic of the Gief vs Akuma, UD - I’m trying to make sure I’m reading it right, on knockdown akuma standing Gief on the floor, they are timing the demon flip ‘throw’ so that on wake-up you eat the throw unless your dashing back or jumping, in which case you’ll catch a DP? Hmm, if you see the flip coming, could you quick stand -> unthrowable lariat? Or is the timing window so large that even trying to stay o nhe ground won’t help? I kinda want to check the throw range on that to see if Akuma could just be stupid and loop it or not if your not in the corner (sounds RELA bad in corner). But with regards to which way the match-up goes, I honestly don’t see it being a big shift, simply because the fight still goes the same way…Akuma messes up two-three times and he’s dead…thats how I see it now and even with that, its how I see it…and while his keep away is horrid, its not quite Seth levels. Hell what if akuma slips up with his timing and that DP comes out… I also question ‘how often’ Gief gets knockdown in the match-up. Yes of course he does at soem point, but not frequently.
