Zangief Strategy/Match-up Thread

  1. Play her like a Chun-Li with absolutely none of the moves that scare you. You can keep throwing out pokes and eventually work in there for SPD / short, short x EXGH guessing fun.

  2. Same way. You can make infinite mistakes and still win the match without issue thanks to the huge stamina and lack of Sakura having a good normal ‘Get off me!’ move. Only her EX moves are worth a damn.

I guess I don’t play with average sakuras…theyh don’t jump at me…if they do, they have the timing and distance down for beating the c.lariat. Usually its chip/annoywith fireballs while holding a defensive position. Any jump in is met with a c.fp, empty/short jumps are dealt with via c.mp, trying to ‘walk’ in is dealt with by s.rh (has great range and comes out quick), and they are active enough to KEPP enough stock for those EX moves. Its still in my favor, but its not quite that simple.

Im pretty sure Sakuras jump ins are like balrogs or gens none of them beat crouch ppp lariat clean if u time it right. If anyone knows for sure let me know. The timing is tricky but not bad at all once u get it down. So they do jump in on u and u can punish the for that.

Rog does this 2 they think they can jump in for free with the fk but the crouch lariat trades with it if u time it right. leting u score a free exgh and a nice knock down. Balrog has become one on my easier match ups once I got the aa lariat timing down vs him.

On wake up I never use jumping knees, I pretty much always jumping splash cross up (or lariat or SPD or sweep or block or empty jump or whatever). I know I should implement more knees in my mix up but I am not sure why.
Thoughts?
Also when they are successful what is the most damaging string into ex green hand?

X_X hard trial 5…c.lkx4, exgh

check out ultra david’s manifesto on option selects. Throw out knees as a wake-up meaty right behind the head of akuma, ken, ryu; on the front of seth’s neck; right on the head of viper. Well-placed knees beat out these character’s wake-up anti-airs. Start using this move right away! It is an essential part of gief’s arsenal.

I got that shit first try.

But I still can’t do it in a match T.T

Thank areeves

I don’t believe you. Not even pics would let me justify someone doing it first time. First ‘set of trying’ sure…but first time? Naw…

Perhaps he’s good at doing Sagat’s bnb. It’s essentially the same combo.

Maybe if he’s got a TE stick and turned on turbo. I got it after about 5 minutes. I had more trouble with the splash to clk to PPP fdc to gh. I tried for like an hour before I realized u had to hit them on the front to fdc the lariat.

Does anyone fdc lariat to get the greenhand. I have never seen it in a match.

With pratice lk to ex hand combo aren’t hard I can confirm 9/10 in match. But when I was beginning with Gief it as so hard!!

FADC Lariat on hit to use ex hand is only good to finish someone, I used it maybe 2 times.

FADC a blocked lariat to do 360/720 can be good sometimes.

Thanks guys for the input on Gief. He is definately one of sakura’s WORST match ups and its really good to get so much from you guys! I myself get annihilated by G2-E Gief’s using only lariat, banishing flat and empty jumps! The Good giefs with real mix ups is just instant K.O for me lol.

I’m sure this info will make alot of people in Sakura forums happy!

So doing some practicing on his BnB combo and i tend to find it easier to do c.lp c.lp s.lk s.lk EXGH as opposed to 3x c.lp s.lk to EXGH. It also does more damage and you are already holding forward long enough to make the EXGH come out easier imo. Even works on cross ups.

viper vs gief 5-5, i swear it can’t be even…viper is almost free after a KD!

big problem vs Honda.
his neutral jump fierce is nuts! beats lariat and hk unless very well timed. already a problem there for me. on top of that, after honda gets a knockdown, theres a mixup I’m not quite sure how to deal with. Honda does his downforward stomp kick and cancels into either oicho or buttslam! and is the lk buttslam safe on block? seems it gets followed up by another buttslam after i block and i get hit when i attempt spd. what to do! shenanigans!

meaty grab from abel on wakeup, can it be reversal spd? or must I jump? i thought reversal was first possible frame?

I’ve done it, but I only do it when I have serious momentum going my way, the match is close, its the end of the match, or its someone who I have a real hard time closing in on (say Dhalsim/Sagat/Chun-li). I usually prefer keeping the meter, thus only EXGH on trade, but if the situation is worth the ‘meter’, then I go for it.

You can reversal all buttslams with SPD. You’re probably not timing it right. The window is small. I think you have 2 frames to do it in on the HK version. LK, you actually have even more time. (I think, I forget which one you have the least time on) But all are reversible because you’re Zangief.

I believe you can back dash out of your said honda mixup. As for beating Abel’s TT, you have to jump or back dash. All meaty non-EX TT beats all throws including SPD/Atomic suplex/super/ultra

akuma match up can’t be 4-6.
maybe its true in states where no real akuma is present.
akuma match up is way harder than sagat match up.
akuma on offence is so powerful.
runaway akuma isn’t that hard, if you play our game right.
real talk

oh and who the fuck wants to waist 3 meters for lariat fdc exgh?
its for show. thats y u don’t see it in real matches.

not sure if this is already somewhere in the gief thread.

this is mainly against blanka, but information applies to all characters.

appearently width of character changes from standing to crouching.
crouching is wider at least for gief.

what this means is that if you block blanka ball crouching and try to exgh for punish, it will never hit unless u do kara cancel. because blocking the ball crouch, blanka bounce back farther, but when u stand up.
but if u block standing, u can catch blanka with regular exgh. because standing block will leave blanka closer to you.

just a lil info
