I’m pretty sure I beat out a Honda’s slaps with s.mp. Plus you can beat it out with j.mk. You have to aim at Honda’s head.
What tools does he have to get out of the corner?
Now we’re talking about using hhs with precision and not spamming them out Honda’s jab comes out in 4 and recovers fast.
Gief can jump over HHS…I’m pretty sure EX GH goes thru it as well. shrug only time I’v ever had an issue fighting Honda as Gief was off his FP…every variant of FP screws with my Gief lol.
You link Cr.Jab into HHS you don’t just throw out HHS. It’s not something that can be jumped over.
You can jump over it once you’re finished blocking it. He has to stop doing the slaps once the blocks push him out. There will always be a break in the attack. A smart gief will see an opening and take advantage. None of the Honda’s I’ve played online actually rush me down though. Most of them seem to want to fight from a distance.
If you jump chances are you might eat a EX-Headbutt or Jumping fierce to put you back into the corner. decent/good Honda’s have the patience of a saint when it come’s to ish like this.
You can also just wait and see what he does. You don’t have to jump. But Honda has to once again make himself in. Gief has plenty of tools to play footies with Honda and if Honda jumps in, gief can just lariat.
But why would Honda jump if your already in the corner? And by waiting your still eating hhs for chip and honda getting meter…
I’m just trying to see what Gief can do once he’s locked into the corner to get out.
In order for Honda to hit you with HHS, he needs to get close. That’s when gief can use pokes or SPD or neutral jump HK. Gief doesn’t need to get out of the corner. If someone wants to come close to gief, then that’s all the better and makes things easier for gief. A good gief isn’t just going to sit there. He’s going to be poking. And I’m pretty sure I’ve beaten out ex headbutt with j.mk. From my experience, j.mk is really good in this match up.
Honda wants to be at that footsie range where he can do things like crouching jab xx hands, standing fierce, far roundhouse, crouching strong, neutral jump fierce, jump roundhouse, and the like. He has good footsies against Gief. Gief can do fine in footsies with jabs and shorts and strongs, and he can jump in on Honda pretty well as long as Honda doesn’t have a charge. If Honda does his floating fierce thing, you can crouching forward kick under it and spin him when he lands, do far standing roundhouse or jab into it, or antiair it with crouching strong. If Honda just made you block crouching jab xx hands, that’s not a big deal, just start the footsies battle over again. Yeah, pretty even matchup imo.
Thanks, UD.
yea, as i have played more and more, im starting to wonder if gief has any advantageous matchups. the majority are even especially as skill level increases. as for honda, i just play all footsies and try to get my fierce out before he gets his jump straight up hands out.
Sure Gief has advantaged matchups, it’s just that many of them become less and less advantaged the more you and your opponents play. And in most matchups, the separation in winningness between the two characters usually decreases as the players get better. Gief still does just fine against most characters.
im prepping for a big tourney in hawaii soon where winner gets a trip and seeding in evo. i have a legitimate shot but i have to worry about guys like eric lee, dagger g, lev, and so on. for such a small state theres a pretty good core of players here. and UD, i know he still has advantageous matchups, because i still win against pretty much everyone i dont know at the arcade. i guess its really because the group of guys that i play with know my strats and mixups already.
I’d just like say that the fact you can’t escape Seth’s ultra or super if you want to approach him is just ridiculous. I’m thinking a viable strategy is to just stick out a j.mk and try to land on his booms to try to get him to miss with his ultra. But once he realizes this, you might be eating a lot of unnecessary booms. This fight really is just retarded. Seth just has so many ways to keep you out.
is there a difference between any of the spd punches?
i noticed that dsp was using different ones against free1up.
not sure if theres a difference in range or anything
jab has really far range while fierce does more damage. i dont think theres any reason to use the strong.
dictator. anything else i can do against him? I hate HK spamming and I hate devil’s reverse tricks. I heard headbutt works and c.MP works against devils reverse as well but I don’t know how it’s supposed to look and I always get over-prioritized.
Thread needs an update
I think the OP needs an update/edit. Flipping through 20 pages of threads for info is getting bit…out of hand
For that matter, character-specific info for the blanks (Ryu, Sakura, etc.) in the OP needs some love. Either that, or someone else make a new post with ALL the info and sticky that thread instead.
My one thing to add, Gief’s standing/far MK is better than most people give it credit for. It tends to linger out there like Blanka’s slide. Use that to your advantage!
HK spamming is quite annoying. I’m sure you’ve come across those who do that whole “move back/forth, toss HK, dash back, rinse, repeat” thing. For this, you’ve got to up your reaction/execution time. Gief’s standing and crouching LP is extremely good at pecking and stuffs the HK spam. If you’re fast enough on the reaction time, you can toss out a green hand afterward. It’s rough, but that’s the only “safe” way to get in. A jumping MK trades (not a good trade mind you), and that whole back/forth stuff puts Dictator in a “safe” state with quick blocks, to which your opponent will block an attempted GH and counter you after. Devil’s reverse you can focus attack (this is mentioned in MANY threads, AND in the original post btw). If your opponent commits to it, they will suffer badly. If they reverse backwards, just FADC. If you’ve got the timing down for it, you can actually EX green hand him on the way down. Good luck
