in that case id go for a st hk at the right range or a lp spd…
although i rarely play ryus or kens who do random srks…yea they wanna bait me to it but theyre not walkin towards me then just suddenly srking…
just my experience

Ken’s LP shoryu is -16 on block, and is about 40 frames total.
Sweep would punish. Even DF+HK would hit a whiff even if it took 20 frames for you to react.
EX green hand would punish either just fine. It comes out in 13 frames.
However, if you’re in range for for a LP SPD… do that. SPD is gief’s quickest punish at 2 frames. There shouldn’t be a 360 motion “execution barrier” if you play as gief. I do the motion as easy as a regular throw.
Next best thing is St. LK xx EX Green hand, which should always be ready to do since st. LK beats shoto’s low forward. St LK has just as much range as st. mp.
Last, if you have no meter and they are out of range for Jab SPD, sweep or st. MP become the punishment of choice.
Schank, stop acting like a troll, you are not better than “me” at SF4. Not that it makes a bit of difference. There are plenty of skilled players who are drains on the community b/c they act like douchebags. Go to a tournament and place high before you start talking smack online.
St. MP -> s. LK-> EX hand is not super reliable in a real match b/c of the tight distancing required. If you whiff the st. lk and green hand kara’s anyway… you’re going to get hurt.
So stop flaming people.
Everyone else, stop flaming as well. His initial suggestion that you have to punish harder than a st. mp is correct. Gief has few opportunities per match, if you don’t take advantage of them, you will lose.
Ask yourself, if sagat whiffs a fierce TU in your face… are you happy with a st. mp punishment? no, you want to get an ultra in somehow.
Damn. Yea I try to be constructive and get a bunch of ppl coming at me for defending myself. Thanks, though. +rep
“defending yourself” does not equal saying that someone is “horrible” at SF4 or saying “I may be young, but I’m better than you at SF4”.
Defending yourself properly by using more examples to prove your point, and not resorting to an ad hominem argument.
Besides, I said your initial point was correct, what more do you want from me?
all this here is situation dependent there is no such thing like “the best” to do sometimes i curse myself becouse i try to punish with spd and earn something hard on my wiff animation and sometimes i curse myself becouse i mistimed my Mp-lk-exgreenhand into a nonbuffered exgreenhand the lk missed and i got a hard punishment but im sure that playing experience makes me better and not disucssiing about it and since my standing ultra is only betwean 20-30% success rate its way to less to perform maybe in a yeahr… i always train some shit while watching tv in a picture in picture
why should anybody discuss BEST options if there arent any real best options everything depents on the situation and your experience mp-lk-exgreenhand is ways better than lp-spd and ways harder to land and all those discussions are on the basic that the player would able to pull it always off…
its just nice to now good options and dont consider only one option as the best…
I appreciate your support, which is why I said thank you. I don’t want anything else. My ad hominem attack was 6 or 7 posts into the argument after someone said something about me being prepubescent(EDIT: And a “fuck 09” reply). This entire page is everyone taking my words out of context and trying to tell me how to post. The ad hominem attack i made was pretty troll and was only in reply to someone insulting me? I proved my point fine b/c now everyone knows st.MP is one of the worst options to punish a missed lp srk with. Really tho, no hate, we should play some games cuz ur in VA and we might get a decent connection. (NJ) We might have got in some casuals at ECG, too?
Although I know this prob wasn’t pointed at me, but the BEST wasn’t the whole point of this discussion. The worst was. If you lay out all the punishes for a blocked lp srk and compare dmg, spacing, difficulty, etc, st.mp comes out pretty low on the list. While this isn’t a concrete list and there is no BEST, you should still try to pick from the top of the “list” if you are trying to improve your game. (like we all are, right?)
But DAMN SRSLY can we move on. Punishing srks with Gief is 101
This was what I was trying to say all along. But some how no one else seems to understand. And I pretty much always SPD on blocked lp SRKs or TUs. If they’re in range, why wouldn’t I do that?
We played in the tournament. I eliminated you in the Gief mirror match. One of 3 mirrors I played that day.
Thank you Reaper, this is what I was saying. This is VERY situational based.
I don’t st.MP in EVERY situation as standard punishment to lp.SRK I do it often and try to link more often than doing SPD. SPD is great punishment, im not arguing against this. Because I punish with SPD aswell, I understand its good.
Tiger Uppercut? Always gets the largest ammount of punishment. I would never punish a Tiger Uppercut with st.MP.
Schank if you really wanna critique my play style over text, you can play me and then see how bad my choice of punishment are. I’m actually a pretty good player. I have alot of Gief years under my belt and have a nice footsies counter style. How I learned Gief was before SRK existed and I stick to that sometimes.
All Im trying to tell you is in these Gief boards we aren’t being hostile to each other. I’m not hostile at you. If you werent trying to say Im a bad player mabey you could learn something about footsies from me or I could learn something from you. Possibly?
XBL: ClydeByrd
Ahh okay i couldn’t remember. GGs again. Played another Gief mirror or two as well. That was a hype ass tourney and got me playing this game more. I went there for Guilty Gear.
Your avatar pic looks a little diff than I remember ya
EDIT: lol “Spin that buttaaa!!”
Clyde - I’ll hit ya up on xbox.
just for the record i would consider a player who will not risk loosing 240 health of himself(ryus groundcombos…) for 110 health less damage on the enemy (woerst case mp cenary) as a very patient player if he is not sure if the lp will hit and as a better player when the other one try to spd and wiff…
less funky flashy but much safer gief hase the health to wait for MUCH more openings on ryu then risk one opening
i will not say that it would be whise to always use mp but in some NOT SO CERTAIN situations its a good alternativ since the lk ex greenhand followup make it as good as a exsupplex and much better than a LP-SPD(50 dmg more much better positioning)
therefore every way of punish is a weapon and the best gief knows all the possibilitys instead of just rely on ONE only…^^
If they try that lag abusive lp shoryu * 2 I focus attack when I see the first one and then POUND the second one XD
Rofl I thought I was the only one that did that. I call it “scrub kryptonite”. If someone has proven to me that they are horrible and are just spamming lp dp’s trying to get lucky then I’ll do that just to show them how confident I was that they’d do 2. The funny thing is those dudes will still keep doing it, even after that. I don’t think most of the online crowd actually thinks about what’s going on while they are playing.
I need help with the bison matchup. I’m pretty good with forcing bison into the corner, but then he starts getting me with the s.hk which seems to have crazy range. Does gief have any standing pokes that stuff bison’s s.hk? …sort of along the lines of stuffing sagat’s rhk with s.lp?
Much like akuma’s S.HK, kick lariat will beat Bison’s S.HK if you do it early while he kicks your lariat during the first rotation.
Edit : Very early j.mk works great also, but be cautious of Bison then mixing it up with scissor kick.
EX green hand works as well, if you can time it right (don’t worry about range, the range for green hand is usually awesome enough).
On the topic of Bison’s S.HK.
J.HP seems to trade with it most of the time if you aim to hit the tip and it trades in your favour, so it’s actually pretty good if you have a life-lead. It worked really well on one Bison I met who was quite S.HK happy and he did a lot of AA with it in the first round. Second round I did an experiment and sure enough it traded everytime, but he eventually stopped because I was winning through the trades.
I had simular trouble facing my friend when he was using Bison someone already said Kick Lariat (which I’ve never tried) but I was gonna say Punch Lariat has worked very welll for me stopping bison’s standing HK and MK
I need serious strategies against El Fuerte. I lose to them almost every time in Championship Mode. It doesn’t matter how many GPs they have. I have no idea how to approach this match. All I know is if I get knocked down, I have 4 options to get out. Dash, EX hand, focus, or jump. I just lost to another Fuerte today. I perfected him in the second round but lost both the first and 3rd round. The only thing that I’m relying on right now seems like to get him dazed. I’m not sure how to punish his moves.
Well there are teo EFs…crazy mofos and patient mofos. How was he beating you? Crazy ones Just catch a s. rh while still running, before jump, they ‘sometimes’ over jump it if I miss because I’m moving foward. I basically turn the fight into my reaction/defense against his, we both want knockdowns…so I try to prevent him from getting one and if I get a successful knockdown…then yay for me.
But I typically play the match FAR away and zone. shrugs If you were on 360 I’d man up on you with EF, though I typically avoid Gief as EF…I feel like I’m counter picking which is a no-=no for me (if I AM a counter pick whatever, but I hate that fight as EF and relish it as Gief)
