Zangief Strategy/Match-up Thread

I’m wondering if just standing back and building meter with KKK lariat for EX GH then baiting hands and crushing it with EX GH would work.

If he needs to gekiro to build meter, perhaps that makes it so he is far more likely to try for it on wakeup, you could maybe also try using the short jump to bait a gekiro.

Gief’s air to air options?

I find myself in the bad habit of tossing out jump + fierce / splash every time I jump (Alpha 3), but I lose air battles more often than not. What’s Gief’s best air to air? J mk? J neutral jab? Headbutt? Looked around for a bit but didn’t find much on the subject, so any help would be much appreciated.

In most situations where I expect air to air, I use jumping MK, it’s very all purpose and useful. It’s fast and it’s hitbox seems to beat out almost everything.

If you are certain of them jumping and want to meet them in the air, headbutt is the strongest air attack you can hit them with.

I use jumping HP to hit people jumping straight up though.

i think headbutt beats out alot of attacks when timed right, beating out other air attacks is more about hitboxes then anything else. like which hit is recognized first. your hitbox changes depending on which move you are doing, so does your opponents. Some characters have moves that are just ass beating at beating out other air attacks like blankas j. hp. geif doesnt really have an end all air attack, you have to be look at the situation ie: character, what move hes using, and your distance from him coupled with what position he is compared to you ( above, below, or level).

generally i wouldnt jump up after someone as geif because from what i have seen he doesnt have anything to beat out most characters jump ins from the air. if your already in the air though and someone is jumping up to meet you then you can use hp rh or mk to stuff them because your attacks angle down. if you suspect a jump in you could neutral jump rh, this beats out alot stuff.

i just wouldnt be overly jumpy because most shotos have air move hitboxes that dominate yours, and in general geifs air to air game isnt that strong, on the other hand his antiair game is very good with lariat and cr. mp

I am normally a Sagat player, but today I accidently chose 'gief. The other player ended up choosing honda. He had about 8000GP but did not have an answer for my lariat. I did the scrubbiest thing ever and just lariat-ed non stop, but it worked and I moved on.

Then that guy definitely shouldn’t have 8000 gp…

I played a really good honda player one time. He was beating me 5-0 until I decided to lariat more on his wakeups. What happened next kinda surprised me. I won the next two matches and he ended the game. I think he got sick of me continuingly lariating every 2 seconds. Kinda funny also.

The best thing about the honda matchup, is that on his ultra, you can just mash on punch lariat and he’ll keep his headbutt animation going until you hit him. I did this back in August and it pissed my friend off so much lol.

Lariat goes thru tons of Ultras/supers, its all about hitboxes.

Honda player at 8K is easy, they just head butt and keep it charged. As a Honda player it boils my skin to see this playstyle, if you can aintain a charge for a headbutt, you can do the same with buttslam, and EASILY add butt slam shennanigan’s to your arsenal. I dunno I guess lazy people annoy me.

buttslam is very punishable. Maybe that’s why he wasn’t doing it.

like ex green hand is and it should althou be used mutch by every zangief the same with butslam

I’m not exactly sure what the best way to punish Honda’s ultra is. I had a guy do his ultra from a screen away because I guess he was desperate and we both had little life left. I jumped over it and landed behind him thinking I can just SPD him for the win but I ended up whiffing the SPD and he killed me. I guess I could have just lariated and beaten him but I thought my SPD would connect. Apparently, he’s still in the air at the end of his ultra so I couldn’t grab him immediately. He also seem to recover very fast from a blocked ultra.

LOL. Just hit the PPP Lairat button when he is comming at you and you win vs Ultra.
