Zangief Match-Ups Thread

The Vega matchup kind of feels like Dhalsim in that you need to take some damage to get in, but once you’re in he doesn’t have much to deal with it. He has great distance pokes man…

This is easily my most annoying matchup.

How do you punish Lauras cartwheel? I always go for sweep from habit but it gets blocked.
Also i though a Birdie yesterday that constantly dropped bananas and tins and I couldn’t get close no matter what I tried, got in like twice in 2 rounds. Any ideas?

If you’re talking about Laura’s overhead v skill, it is -7 on block so you can spd it for free.

With Birdie I will get close to the banana and poke over it with headbutt, st.HK, St.HP then v skill walk over the banana to get rid of it if there is an opportunity. Once it is gone and you’re very close he can’t throw down another without taking a hit.

What is this Karin matchup all about? She feels so plus on blocks. I need to use her in training to get a feel of what her moves actually are for sure but damn, she hits to hard and seems to be able to combo from anything. Tips?

Can i get some tips with the following matchups:

Bison - Seems hard to punish, what are some key moves he does that you can punish w/ spd.
Chun - Way too fast & hard to get in, what normals are good against her.
Dhalsim - My worse matchup by far. What am i suppose to be doing in this?

I have a lot of trouble with Karin myself. Like I mentioned in my match-up overview it feels like Chun-Li light sometimes. She just beats Gief in basic footsies and can easily convert into simple, yet damaging (juggle) combos and CA from those footsies. One basic thing I do know is that some of her combinations have sizeable gaps in between them so it can help to be buffering SPDs into her block strings and even combos.

These are probably Zangief’s 3 worst match-ups. Chun-Li and Dhalsim especially are nightmares. I think Gief vs Sim is the worst match-up in SFV right now.

Chun-Li is a match I have a massive amount of trouble with myself. I have very little advice for you with her. She just has so many buttons which easily beat Zangief and her ex spinning bird kick on wake-up is a good way for her to survive a knockdown. Not to mention her absolutely godlike V-trigger which opens up insane damage opportunities for her.

My advice against Dhalsim is that LP can beat teleport mix-ups and iron muscle into SPD can work against Dhalsim’s annoying teleport overhead praying hands chop thing. Other than that it really seems to be a match of hard reads for Zangief. You really need to land that knockdown and make Dhalsim afraid to push buttons. I’ve full screened ex Siberian Express’d a Sim before just to get closer. You’re going to be trading a lot of health to get in. The Iron Muscle punch is also worth doing but be wary of using iron muscle itself too much. You’ll be wasting a lot of health in no time due to the slow recovery of gray health and the fact that Dhalsim has a whole lot of ways to get a stray hit on you. Practice a lot at hitting limbs (especially when they whiff) or when they touch the armour of your HP.

To fight against Dictator with anyone you need to know what he wants to do and what exactly is + on block or not. Kind of like the R.Mika match-up. The good thing for Zangief is that Dictator has to be quite close to do most of his damage. This puts him in SPD range quite often. The other thing which helped me a lot in fighting Dictator is that, while he has a bunch of jumping attacks, very few of them are actually invincible. crHP is your friend against a lot of them and LP will do quite well in a pinch.
Basically you need to go into training mode and check which of Dictator’s moves are punishable, especially with spd. Also remember that his slide crush counters HP so be very careful with it. (Or try to bait it out since it’s unsafe on block.)

Thanks Hassun. Absolutely agreed, Chun and especially Sim are painful. Cringeworthy matchups indeed.

Actually Nash is probably worse than Dictator but Dictator definitely wins the match-up.

With Chun Li people like to poke you with their normals. If you time it and it’s actually not to hard, you can grab her from the end of her normals. Helps a lot I this match up.

How do I punish Nash? all his moves have good recovery. He’s so cheap

Mastery of V-Skill and good footsies are required for this matchup.

Agreed. V skill shuts down a lot of his options like qcf kick, spinning backfist, or his step roundhouse. Those are all free SPD’s when parried and he will stop doing that.

Ok I see that against Nash the only option is V-Skill. It’s very risky because of his sonic booms. All his special moves are very safe and have a good recovery. I find this matchup harder than Dhalsim.

I have problems with R.Mika when I’m in the blender. No reversal so I have to guess on wakeup. She owns Gief on knockdown. How do I beat her at neutral and keep her grounded?

Kens that play a little lame then switch to offensive then pull back again body me. They basically throw fireballs like a shoto should, I try to jump over a fireball and they have time to dash up then dp. Breaking my whole idea of safe jumps over fireballs. Headbutt absorbs fireballs but kinda hard to time imo with variable speed projectiles. V-skill works for only but so long before someone dashes in and grabs or does a random light normal or crossup to take my white health. Or my favorite when they see me press a button mid range and then cross me up because they know my aa is 9 frames and im still recovering from a button.

Rashid is hella annoying. I feel like my job should be to control him and keep him grounded but he moves too much. s.hk and s.hp punish eagle spike on block after he lands so I usually wait for v-trigger then cancel into it after an eagle spike. He can also instant ex bd after a eagle spike is absorbed by v-skill but that shit is hard. Light running spinning mixer into either grab or light normals is annoying but I imagine that annoying for anyone.

Anyone have tips on fighting those characters? Especially beating Mika in neutral.

Well, Traditionally gief was consider to has a terrible matchup with all fireball characters and good match up with non-fireball character
In SFV gief is same as the past (over even worse) against fireball characters
However, he is now often also has terrible matchup against non-fireball characters
Especially Necalli; can totally outpoke by his footsies against gief very well, and push gief into corner with its V-Skill and uppercut (if u jump), once gief is in the corner, he is generally over. Gief has the worst wake up and defend ability in the game due to the lack of invincible moves.

Even Larua is consider to be the best match up of gief
I don’t think so, Gief can do nothing against Laura’s corner pressure game

This is the top 10 best/worst matchups in eventhubs
It is a fucking joke gief has 5 matchups within 10
Fuck you Cacpom, Capcom has no idea how to design a pure grabber

Best / worst match-ups
1.Dhalsim 6.8 / Zangief 3.2
2.Chun-Li 6.3 / Zangief 3.7
3.Nash 6.2 / Zangief 3.8
4.Chun-Li 6.1 / Laura 3.9
5.Chun-Li 6.0 / R. Mika 4.0
6.Nash 5.9 / R. Mika 4.1
7.F.A.N.G 5.9 / Zangief 4.1
8.Karin 5.9 / F.A.N.G 4.1
9.Birdie 5.8 / Zangief 4.2
10.Necalli 5.8 / F.A.N.G 4.2

I wouldn’t put a whole lot of stock into what eventhubs has to say about anything.

You’re right liquidlotus. Mika is really annoying, especially in the corner.
I can’t even SPD or lariat on wakeup ala SF4 style.

your exspd works wonders, it is unthrowable. if you see a tick throw use it.

Everyone has problems with R.Mika when they are in the blender/corner. That’s just how that character works. She’s very setup-heavy and once you’re being mixed up it’s a rough ride. Her neutral isn’t actually that good though. She basically has 2 main moves: Side kick and dropkick. Dropkick is the easiest to counter but there is a catch. You should NEVER block the dropkick because it leads into the R Mika blender. Either iron muscle it into SPD or neutral jump it. Her side kick far more annoying but not as powerful and doesn’t lead to as many bad situations. Set the training dummy to do both dropkick with and without charge and side kick at random and try to outpoke the side kick while heavily punishing the dropkick.
Another thing to watch out for is her forward jump thing. She can get out of corners extremely easily if you are too close to her and even if you’re pretty far away. I haven’t really found an optimal way to stop her from doing this so if anyone has any advice for that let us know.

Ken I have less advice for. I have a lot of problems with Ken because of his speed and variety. His cross-up is indeed extremely annoying for Zangief. Normally Gief’s main answer to cross-ups is LP but I have found it misses Ken quite often when he goes for the cross-up. Crouching into lariat works somewhat better but you have to be quicker on the draw to get it right. Be very conservative in pressing buttons from far away against a character like Ken. Especially HP. His forward dash will punish you at ranges you wouldn’t expect him to.

Rashid is so insanely mobile and attacks from so many angles that you really have to bring the fight to him. Annoyingly they made him an excellent zoner as well. Put a lot of practice time in getting good jump ins over his projectiles but always remember that once he has CA or even V-trigger you can no longer jump in on him. His forward flying kick can sometimes be punished on block with an uncharged HP or HK.
