I agree with you. I just always disliked how much Gief relied on the GH in SFIV for a lot of things. It made him feel less like a big slow tank because his mobility and combo game/damage access revolved more around GH than the SPD.
Just personal preference, I have more fun now that the character is genuinely a big slow tank.
Like I mentioned before I feel that Gief being revolved around his V-trigger is his biggest downfall. The fact that his V-trigger is pretty much a SF4 ultra as compared to others who can build it at much more efficient rates is pretty damning particularly for characters that have a reversal while your stuck having to sacrifice the v-meter and it can screw you over pending on how the round is going. I said it needs an overhaul meter building wise and me personally would like the trigger to be an actual AA but that’s never going to happen.
I agree with you on some things but i also agree with @Frost , i hate the idea of speedyGief with GH and lil combos of bitchslaps
They should just find a way to give him some guaranted stuff and improve his tools keeping the direction of him being the powerhouse of the cast
At some point they considered made his skill being combo strikes into throws
Will have loved that shit lol
As now imho it will be nice if they give him the ability to cancel MP/MK/HP/HK into RBG (normal/EX) with EX version being combo
Also agree on buffing Iron Body… it will be cool if move way faster (or if it start the animation with a forward step movement) and if they add CC to the “flex-punch” lol
But tbh i’m also curius to see if low throw have particular good advantages/quality, maybe it can open new scenarios
Also i’m not so pessimist against the kicks-counter… after all we still don’t know how much stuff it will cover, and even as buttons it’s not a true 50/50 guess… after all at some long poke range most of characters have only kicks
Also it may help in the matchup vs some future char, example june S2 char seem to be Abigail, wich in theory is taller than Hugo (lol) and may very easily end up be like that SF4 T.Hawk-Gief ugly matchup… imgine if we had an heavy counter to Hawk stHK
I don’t think it will be something you see often, but if the dmg is huge as Kolin’s (or more) it will at least affect the way your opponent play
Same for the low throw, new lariat nerf may make peoples crouch more but maybe this new choke slam is something scary enough to make peoples risk the lariat in da face as the lesser evil
PS: another thing i don’t like it’s how they flattened everybodys lifebars, imho a good way was
1200- Gief, NewGiant (Abigail?)
1150- Birdie
1100- Alex
1050- Rog
You’re probably not that good yourself. If you can’t break past 7k there’s just issues as a player that you need to overcome. Nobody that’s good at fighting games should still be at 7k unless they only play casuals and place decently at tourneys. If you actively play ranked you should have long been past 7k no matter what you like or don’t like about the game.
I see Froztey brought it up as well. Only so much you can blame on the game
It’s not as if you’re a complete scrub if you’re around 7k, especially with Gief. That ranks you in the 14.000-16.000 region which isn’t too bad considering how many pro and tourney players fill up the upper half of the ranking list.
In SFIV I was ranked just under 200 at one time, and I did very well in earlier titles. Without bragging, I can safely say I’m good at fighting games. In SFV however, I have a long way to go before I even reach Super Platinum. The game simply doesn’t suit me.
But he actually IS way bigger/slower/biggerhurtbox/nocombos/noprojectiles than rest of the cast, is literally his archetype
He was 1200 vs Ryu’s 1000 in vanilla SF4 and felt about right
It mean be able to take 2 heavy punches more than rest of the -average- cast*, does’nt feel that crazy
The ability to have some more life to pay his attempts of get close should be part of his design… very hittable, but can take ton of dmg and pay back if put hands on you
He’s an extreme concept but as execution currently he got all extreme negative points full, with the positive ones not as extremized (dmg/life/stun)
Gief design is itself extreme, try to make him flat with average cast make it don’t work (specially if negative traits ARE extreme)
*consider that some other char should imho be moved to 1100/1050 too, so he will able to take just 1 more punch than smaller/faster heavyweights as Alex or Rog
When Gief had 1200 health in SF4 vanilla, he was considered to be a OP character (Except the Sagat Matchup).
Afterwards Capcom nerfed him fucking hard, including health nerf, dmg nerf, Green hand can not knock down anymore…etc.
To be Honest, such buff hope will NOT be happen.
To be cler i think Vanilla Gief WAS strong af, maybe even OP, but being 1200 hp itself will not bring Gief close to SF4 Gief
Even at equal hp SF4 Gief will be way faster, stronger and more complete/dangerous
Dude back then was more or less fast as he’s now and had iirc 620 Ultra1, 150 heavy normals, 160 normal throws, 99999 stun points headbutt, Green Hand and Focus attack, rangier SPDs, combos etc etc
… what i mean is being 1200 was just the cherry on top
Imho he mass outrage that the number itself will cause is just mirror of trashy community, that will compare it with theyr waifu main being under1000 hp and feel like some kind of injustice
Except same peoples whining about Gief having “too much” more HP are completely ok with him being fucking slow, big hurtbox, easy hittable and with less as possible tools to put hands on them
They point at the only thing Gief have over theyr main, and ignore the fucktons of things theyr main have over him
It does’nt sound like balancement to me, more like capcom try to please a not-Gief-mains part of the community
I’d either want an ability to recover grey health (2-4 second timer after vskill in which a succesful spd recovers 50-100 grey maybe?) or something to become more mobile, making his vskill dash-cancelable for example.
Change flexed health to orange health or something, make it recover faster. The S2 adjustments were huge on Gief’s ability to tank hits and work his way in.
