yea do it earlier than you think you should. it has to be almost immediate when the dash ends.
What is your main plan against Karin? Her foot speed and her pokes have been giving me alot of trouble. I’ve been doing the s.lk OS to lariat to fish for her vskill, but it’s not 100% reliable, and get CC’d by her s.hk. Do you play against her patiently and slowly push her into the corner? Is there a main poke that’s good against her to keep her in check? Seems like all my buttons get beat no matter what.
St. mp is good against Karin. I never do the st. short OS Lariat anymore. It whiffs too often and the punishes against good players are brutal.
Charged St.HP and Iron Muscle should deter some of those pokes happy blondes.
When she has V-trigger activated just block and take the throw. Seriously.
Can someone review my recent matches? I’m really struggling even though I understand frame data and the core mechanics of the game. I especially struggle with shotos.

Poor footsies, too reliant on lariat for getting in, not utilizing Crush Counters/non optimal punishes, some bad habits such as overly using crouching fierce (particularly on opponents wakeup) lack of fundamentals… no meaty game whatsoever.
Really frame data knowledge is pretty much irrelevant at your level, you just need to focus on the basics. Learn Gief’s BnB combos, how to poke and apply pressure to your opponent. If you’re watching your replays and then watching some of the pros like Itazan and Infexious, it should become apparent where you’re going wrong.
On the plus side, you do seem to have the roundhouse CC into ex Air SPD on lockdown and your general SPD game seems decent so there’s plenty to build off. Just stop doing RBG’s from full screen and wasting meter/V-trigger.

And of course it’s Itazan. I’ve changed my mind now, he’s not only the best in the world but the ONLY Gief in the world. I also agree he will get nerfed imo. There’s no way he’s getting improvements. I predict cr.jab will get worse and we will lose some oki options. Maybe lariat gets nerfed too cause everyone’s bitching about it and we all know who Capcom listens to.
Considering what he achieved with Gief in S1 that’s a fair statement.
It’s a bit(painfully) obvious Itazan is the only Gief who can make him work, but hey. He’s top tier!
It’s no different to what Xian achieved with Fang. But people will complain more and more about Gief now.
Gief’s bad MUs are definitely better offline than online which is part of the problem really. Dealing with online Guiles and Sims makes you question all these claims of Gief being top tier.
The more I play Gief, the more I think he doesn’t have a single matchup in his favor. Not one. Literally every character can make life hell for him with a basic neutral jump/meaty throw/meaty whatevertheirbestpressuretoolis okizeme. To escape it there’s nothing you can do but guess right. And don’t give me that crap about reading your opponent, there’s absolutely no skill involved, just luck. If he flips an imaginary coin inside his head to pick his next move all your ‘reading’ means nothing, it’s just guesswork.
Maybe Uri Geller could make Gief work. If he weren’t a fraud, that is.
Itazan is the best SFV player in the world. If Gief were upper-mid tier people would gush over him like they did with Infiltration when Nash was still good.
Nothing pains me more then a neutral jump. damn right disgusting and ought to be nerfed out of the game just like those pesky meterless reversals.

Yeah let’s not get too negative. He’s just a character you gotta put some work in with, he’s definitely got match-ups in his favour. A couple of them.
Playing Gief is like playing Sim. It requires certain skills and a mindset unique to most of the cast. As popular as Gief is he’ll never be adopted on mass like a shoto character.
