Zangief General Thread: Our Russian Skies Are Protected

So far characters with fireballs are ruling this game, so it’s not only Gief but most grapplers aren’t exactly having extraordinary results tournament wise. The only one who is having success but that’s mainly because most people haven’t gotten the punishes down is Mika and she will be exposed as the game goes along, just like Laura who really only has a tournament win mainly because the game was fresh out the box.

I don’t count Necalli as a “grappler” in any way would assume most of you guys don’t either.

Yeah all the grapplers are weak in 5, it just so happens that Gief is the worst of the worst. I don’t think that’s a coincidence either. Evansgambit, I on the other hand have way less confidence in Capcom lol. Combofiend hates Gief and grapplers, they suck in 5. Coincidence? He’s all about rush down, offensive play, and being super aggressive. That’s 5 in a nutshell. Coincidence?

This game just isn’t built for grapplers imo. I’ve come to accept that Gief sucks and playing him in this game will be a constant struggle against good players. I doubt he will get much better when they start making balance changes later on so I don’t have any high expectations. Maybe Urien will be fun lol.

Gief is too slow, they need to bump his walk speed.

I actually like super lame gief. He’s just not quite good enough. I’d rather see his strengths buffed than homogenizing him tho.

They need to buff his damage. If he is going to be this slow, then his moves should do more damage when they connect. That is balance.

i did find out something cool from the tournament this weekend. i had a ryu player get a combo on me crouching and he accidentally did a combo into hurricane kick. in between the second and third kick i did a instant air exspd and it connected. When i got home i tried in training mode and it is incredibly easy.
it is not really that valuable but it is really demoralizing to the other player. almost like a taunt as they think it is crazy difficult.
Kinda pointless but really fun.

If he actually had a fast grab, like 2 frames or less, he’d be remarkably better. Actually being able to reliably punish your opponents for being reckless as well as damn near guarenteeing a grab after a successful parry would instantly make the character much, much better. It would also make raw spd usable, rather than damn near needing to land something first for the plus frames. I’ve actually seen a lot of good ideas on here, but the depressing thing is I doubt any will ever be used.

Next year he’ll probably get buffed with: Zangief now has 1075 health

What do you think the chances are that capcom even reads these posts?

I recently got the ls-62 and have the square and octo gate for it. I actually prefer it’s soft short throw in the octogate. I have used the sanwa and a ls-32 both in square gate previously and like the ls-62 so far.

I actually think this away grab should be 3 frames, just give it less damage.

Why less damage? If they neutral jump and it whiffs you’re already taking more damage than you currently deal

Why do I have a feeling his damage is gonna get nerfed hard eventually? Idiots still bitch that spd’s do too much, freaking clueless. Just make jab or ex spd 3 frames but DON’T lessen the damage. That way people can’t just spam safe moves all day against us while we just have to guess constantly. The fact that we can’t even punish scissor kicks, cannon strikes, and so many other moves now without ca is a total joke imo.

I was just saying if Gief had one 3 frame throw make it less damage. 3 frames is quick. You also don’t want ppl spamming throws. Because throws take priority over normals. I’m not saying it has to be a lot less…

Make it do 100 instead of 130 for the b+LP+LK

If it were me I would just rebalance his SPD and reg. throws.

LP SPD - (5) frames (most frames), longest range, least damage, quick recovery on whiff (13 frames)

MP SPD - (4) frames, mid range, medium damage, mid recovery on whiff (26 frames)

HP SPD - (3) frames, close range, highest damage, most recovery on whiff (52 frames)

Reg. Throws now 4 frames.

Giving Zangief a 3 frame grab won’t make him broken.

All it would do is make people actually think about what they do instead of just hitting buttons because they know Zangief can’t do anything about it.

There are characters that do well without a reversal. This will do nothing but bring churning back. It’s a bad play style and makes gief brain-dead on defense.

Agreed. His problem is walkspeed, normals, and a reliable combo. A faster grab and he will still lose bad to chun, Nash, and sim. But he would destroy a third of the cast.
He should have massive frame advantage on most of his normals with faster Walkspeed. Make lariat a reliable ender like combo off of max reach cr jab and you have a complete character.

Also I would love if you could combo vtrigger off of lights on activation. Every other character can it would make Him so scary.

If he still had comboable ex spd I’d have lots of fun with him.

I’m okay with him destroying half the cast. I mean I don’t see waves of people crying over air legs which is quite possibly one of the most annoying things they added to Chun like she didn’t have enough good buttons to abuse.

I mean Nash and Ryu already make quick work of most of the cast anyways.

I think just a comboable ex spd would fix him. Another alternative would be maybe change up some properties of f.mk so you can get in a little easier, effectively making it a poor man’s green hand.
