OK, maybe bad news, maybe hot news:
Mark, their VP of Sales, got voted on (WTF?) to call me.
I need to move off of their shared hosting and onto dedicated hosting. It’ll cost me about the same or less(?) and I should get more disk space ( <3!!!).
But right now I’m beasting on everyone else in their shared system. He says, “Your site is drawing exponentially more traffic than anything else on the platform.”
So I’ll be moving to another separate box, normal access like I/we have now – hopefully no one notices the transition. The move will probably happen in the next week (starting either this Friday or Monday), and should hopefully be transparent. Hopefully with the move to my own server, I can fix up some of the backend stuff (polls?) I’ve wanted to do, and the more disk space thing gives me a boner.
If we get more disk space and unlimited bandwidth, this is sweet. If we start running into bandwidth limits, this is going to suck and we may have a huge problem. I will only know given time.
So – that’s what I know so far. Very positive news on the disk space front, very positive news on the responsiveness front, and we’ll see how everything else sorts out.

OK, the 80/120GB hard drive is hot (the 120GB is less than what I paying for now…). The 2TB transfer limit would probably work (that’s about what the average month does now), but we might have some upfront pain/overage as people get stuff they didn’t really access to before. My entire public archives are about ~130GB at this point, so… yeah, this would potentially host everything interesting that I’ve got.
This could be mind-bogglingly good. (Bear in mind that they’re really reliable, really fast, and generally really responsive - there’s great other sites too, but most of them are either not reliable, not fast, or have crushing bandwidth caps.) Keep your fingers crossed that this works out well. They’ve been really good to me so far. This could be a nice Christmas present. :tup:
Hey Zach, just wanted to say whats up? Haven’t really been following much of the Marvel community at all since EVO, I actually decided to retire from the game altogether. But good to see you’re still going strong and looks like you’re gonna get a nice upgrade to your site.

No, Windows Movie Maker is much more designed for tinkering with the content, so I typically use that. It’s kind of a kid’s app, but - it does what I want it to.
You can use the wmcmd.vbs encoding script to do batch encoding pretty easily – that’s how I converted all the Ultimate Marvel AVIs I had to WMVs.

that’s a browser problem, normally means your trying to directly open video in browser or something. Anyway that = streaming which owns bandwidth, you wanna right click save as.

I don’t know about the speed so far - I haven’t had much chance to play with the server yet. It’s been a long while since I was administering a U*IX box. =\
EDIT: Turned directory browsing back on. I’m heading out for the day, but my home (DSL) machine is paaainfully uploading a bunch of junk under Combos, starting with Commy. And of course I’ll work on getting the Servbot error page fixed back up.
