Are there any AA options besides lk upkicks and in what situations would you use them? I find that the lk upkicks AA range is much less than the shotos, and it seems like it takes a longer time for it to come out as well, which leads to my next question about reversals. What is yun’s main reversal? I assumed it would be lk upkicks, but I’ve found that when trying to do a wakeup reverse on shotos, it always gets beat by the shotos DP.
Yun’s easy to safe jump with shotos. Usually if you want to try blowing through a frame trap, it’s EX or HK Kicks.
AA options
Ultra 1 by itself is also a good AA option. fst.MP is alright, wouldn’t use any of Yun’s other normals to AA though.
There’s also close MK. It’s very situational, but can lead to nice stuff. Never tested it, but I assume it should be good against people trying to cross you up, or if you cross under a jumping opponent.
it is. what i do if i notice they’re either neutral jumping or forward jumping in the corner after a hit shoulder, i walk forward a
little bit and press it if they jump as they come down. it blows up forward and neutral jump attacks in most cases but when they jump back it can be a little hard to time for some reason.
I use LP Lunge instead because I get counter hit out of cst.MK more often. Extra range is nice though.
It is very good against cross ups if you aren’t knocked down though.
cross up dive kick in the corner isnt really worth it unless its for the last hit, unless you like the odds of being put to the corner and taking a risk of getting punished
You can actually combo LP shoulder from cl.s.mk on ALL character (very easy on Yun yang, easier on Sim, hard on most). It look like it is a 1f or 2f Link (yes, LINK, from cl.mk with juggle with float mode), and after the LP Shoulder, you can comfortable execute a HP Lunge with ease. very situational, as you would only get cl.mk from AA or frame trap, but just to maximize your damage potential.
It is easier to connect Lp shoulder if you plink LK with it (DP motion + LP~LK), or Plink LP with select/back button. Its up to you though.
P/S: Btw, anyone use Far S.MK to AA. It look like a good poke, but so far I found it hard to AA with it. May be the hit box is not that good?
far st.mk as AA is not good. hitbox is more horizontal than it is vertical. Overall not reliable, it shouldn’t be your go-to AA at that range. Your AA should mostly consist of light upkicks and for characters that can change jump trajectory EX upkicks. all 3 versions of strong work pretty well in most cases as anti air as well but the crouching version is situational.
Has anyone tried cross up Heavy Dive kick into EX cmd grab? Stumbled upon that on accident in training mode while trying to see if I could combo off of it. I’ve gotten pretty consistent with all of Yun’s BnBs, so I’m starting to test out his ranges. It’ll probably be one more week in the dojo before I start fighting people and studying matchups. If that goes well, I’ll start entering the Big Two.
No, but I like that idea against people who like to mash throw after blocking a dive kick.
But ex cmd grab has 8 f startup so if you dont hav enough frame adv you’ll get thrown.
I should clarify. From tech throw range, if you neutral jump at or near max height, your HK DK will cross up. I was trying to see if you can combo off of that, but Yun doesn’t have a lot of frames to work with because he lands really far from the opponent. It’s possible that something lands a 1 frame link from this, but the EX cmd grab is free, because it’s in one of those situations where the hit stun window is in the sweet spot for the block/throw/reversal game after a hit.
I asked about it here, because it looks pretty good in training mode, but I don’t know if anyone has tried that in a match. I’m going to session with it myself, mashing out reversals of different sorts to see what shakes out. FYI the training dummy was Adon.
Hey all, I’m a Gen main looking to pick up Yun as a secondary. I suppose my main questions are
What do you consider his best anti-air normals? I often see yun’s doing an anti-air normal into some form of shoulder to cross up. Also neutral jump anti-airs? It seems like a lot of Yun’s use either stand jab or strong but it’s hard to tell.
Best frame traps? Ones good against straight up crouch-tech mashers and some good against delayed techers?
And where is everyone at? Yun is still good =(
cr mp is decent for far anti air and os teching with it is good against dive kicks, st mp is ok overall his normals aren’t that good for anti airing its best just to use lk upkicks also if you anti air with lk upkicks and only get the 2nd hit of the upkicks you can confirm into lp lunge or mp lunge depending on high they are or combo into ultra 1.
To get lp shoulder to cross up is to successfully air to air so when you land you can input lp shoulder and it will cross up you will have enough frame advantage to combo into cr lp and go into bnb or confirm into super, dont abuse it though good players can counter it pretty easily and if they mash dp its easy to auto correct to beat your shoulder.

What are some of Yuns blockstrings? I’m sort of new to blockstrings in general as I’ve never incorporated them into my game. How would you be able to tell in training mode if your blockstring is true or not?

You can tell if its true by seeing if you can mash dp if it doesnt come out that means its a true string.
generally you don’t have a true block string unless you chain normals or are lucky enough to have normals that are so much + on block that your fastest normal comes out before they’re able to move (so if you have something that’s +4 on block and then use a 3f normal, it’d be a true block string.)
with yun, this is pretty easy mode because all of his lights are chainable except st.LK.
anyway this is more of a character question but since cr.LK isn’t going to save my life every time on wake up. how do i tell which way to block BKs? because tk cancel into throw is hard enough for me to deal with and im getting killed on these things.
