You're Not Gonna Like This One Bit! - Hwoarang Match-up Thread

Thanks for the info on Ryu, it really does boil down to patience and getting him to the corner, still hella annoying though, as for Dhalsim, I still don’t know what to do, his teleport and back dash make wake up mix up hard to do on him.

Try to do the safe jump setups os’ed with h.hk and to deal with jump back hp just let him back himself into the corner then wait for him to teleport out then punish him I really have no clue of where these dhaslims came from and why they think that’s good

Sorry for the delayed response. Again, I put Juri in against Dhalsim, but watching some replays, I can more or less tell you what has worked for me.

Air-to-Air - Canceling your jump into Air Raid beats his limbs if timed right.

Jumping in - Air Raid mind tactics and mid-air Air Raid to mess up his anti air timing work well. But, there are no normals I’ve seen Hwoarang beat out Dhalsim with Sim’s good anti airs.

Dhalsim Jumps - You can use Air Raid on reaction to close the distance. Special Step under his limbs (He has to recover if he attacks, so it is a free combo for you). Special Step twice if you’re too far away and have the time. Cancel into Sky Rocket or do a combo.

Fireballs - Special Step or LK Hunting Hawk will get you around them. After the fireball, just block, don’t jump or move forward right awya. He’s waiting for that. Then move on from there.

Teleport - really hard to tell you want to do here because he could teleport in different ways. You’re honestly going to have to hit the lab with it. I’d suggest Air Raid or Special Steps to catch him because those move you fast. If he teleports behind you and you anticipate it, jumping backwards will help (just like with rolls, except if he teleports in your rage you’ll have a free combo due to his slight recovery on teleports).

Teleport’s in on you: After fireballs after a few empty jumps and j. HPs, he’ll do this eventually. Be ready for it and make him pay for it. Again, hit the lab and see what works best for catching him after teleport. Record the dummy to teleport and do his downward punch (which is what they do for their combo).

That’s all I can really help with, and there probably is a flaw in there somewhere. Characters like Dhalsim are going to be tough for Hwoarang. If Air Raid and mid-air Air Raid were a lot faster, it’d be a different story, but Hwoarang is strong enough.

Against Zangief:

Probably one of the toughest match ups for Hwo in my opinion. Nearly all of Zang’s pokes out prioritize Hwo’s, not to mention they come out quicker and recover quicker. The only poke I throw out sometimes is a far spaced st. mp to st. hp. On block, you’re typically far away enough to be safe (unless you get predictable with spamming this). On hit, you can go into launcher.

Hwo’s sweep has good range, but it’s hurt box on startup is pretty awful and it will often get stuffed by Zang unless done from nearly max range. It also has very slow recovery so if Zang jumps around the same time as you throw it out he can often have time to fully punish from a jumping attack before you recover.

Lk hh is ok to pester him, but it too can be stuffed in its startup. Also, good Zangiefs tend to know spacing well to the point where they walk forward and back just at the right time to make your lk hh whiff and possibly be punished.

Ugh, not much Hwo can do. But my motto is never to be afraid to get in there and perform mixups strings, even on grapplers. It’s what Hwo excels at. Often times Zang players think they can just safely crouch and wait for their moment to attack since they think people are too scared to truly rush them down. Prove them wrong and open them up with one of Hwo’s confusing strings or deadly overheads. Just be careful, Zangief’s pokes are so good that he can literally just walk forward and press buttons. You have to outthink him really good.

Jumping: Typically never a good idea vs Zangief. However Hwo does have his air raid which can be performed from a jump to slightly alter his trajectory and timing. Still, even this often gets beat out by a lariat, and even on hit it feels like a 50/50 as to whether you’re at plus frames or not.

One more note: Zangief’s lariats have really bad hurt boxes in this game. If He throws it out and whiffs, punish him. Do st. mp to hp to launcher. You’ll most likely flat out beat his lariat, even if you’re relatively close to it.

My Overall opinion of the Zang vs Hwo matchup: 6.5/3.5 in Zangief’s favor (this doesn’t take into account the actual teams that are fighting, which can drastically change the matchup stats).

I dont have problems with people but Lili and cammy.

Sweep cammys’s stmk and don’t press anything when she is in just reat to her jumping again with j.lk

Yea, Cammy’s can jab walk you down and it will feel like there is nothing you can do. Never let that bitch in your face.

If Cammy was a guy, she’d be Hwoarang. That being said, Spacing out Cammy with Hwoarang’s Standing MP or MK is a good way to combat her jabs. If she jumps? Sky Rocket. If she flips at you? Sky Rocket. If she spin jumps? Sky Rocket. And if you do put on some pressure, use your Axe Kick to keep yourself at +1 to bait out Cannon Strike reversals.

Whoop dat finely shaped ass, Gentlemen.

What are some ways I can approach / footsie vs. Rufus and Marduk? Rufus has that low punch with huge range and Marduk can walk forward with his superman backfist and if I jump he usually grabs me out of the air.

Vs murduck iirc its just a guessing game at those ranges between is he gonna do that long move or is he baiting a jump. I haven’t tested it but its soo slow u might be able to jump it on reaction.
Against rufus I usually space out his roll kick move or get a little in range but not enough to get hit by j.hk and I neutral jump a lot. He can’t really hit confirm his cr.hp into launcher so don’t be too afraid and treat it like a fb, slowly walk fwd then downback and if he ever chains into that cr.hp u could dash fwd and punish. Btw i hate rufus

I don’t have a lot of experience with Hwoarang yet, but his standing :mp: seems to stuff a lot of Ogre’s pokes. Heck, it seems to stuff a lot of things in general.

I’ve been telling other hwos for a while now st.mp is one of the better pokes in the game it seems to randomly get more range sometimes and randomly crush low moves not to mention its hella fast and can be hit confirmed safely against most the cast. People I used to play with offline used to get hella salty about just that one move and want it nerfed. Iam number 2 online right now and the majority of my wins comes just from footsies

King D you gotta upload some matches, maybe against different chars so us lesser Hwo’s might learn

Hahaha I have some matches I put up but they weren’t really that great. If u search my gamertag ull see matches on yt but they’re mostly of me losing haha. Id like to upload a match vs zangief for people having a hard time with it cuz its starting to be a lot easier than it used to.

 that’s what I told him too. I love his Hwoa/Xia team. I watched his matches against jibbo about 3-4 times  learned a lot from it. Just search on YT for 'sfxt jibbo kingd’
He is a great help in general!

i swear there arent any really truly frightening hwoarangs on psn, i wanna fight king d >.<

Couldn’t agree more. I know mine and he’s shite

can u please because i have such a difficult time dealin with his shit

Ill try to get a vid up soon from my phone but when I play against giefs I look for a lot of their patterns on the ground. I first figure out what type of gief they play especially online, a lot like to gh into range (especially when they get frustrated with losing the ground game) make sure u stay out of range of their gh of choice (usually light punch) and whiff punish every time these type of players will a lot of times keep doing it until they are dead or start jumping. There are also giefs that like to jump into range and rarely use his air knee move a lot of times they will try to mix it up so u will be out of range to dp, but because they don’t use gh too much u can get into that range and dp any jump. But with these giefs u don’t want to use sweep to whiff punish cuz the recovery is horrible and one bad sweep could mean death. In general against jump happy giefs keep aggressive poking out and just try to whiff punish because again that jump can kill u. Those types of giefs aren’t that hard to beat it gets harder when u combine all that with stupid walking forward xx st.lk. but a lot of times giefs are very impatient and use his aggression agaisnt him figure out his limb of choice, st.mp outranges all his moves except st.rh and sweep so if u postion urself at the edge of st.mp xx st.fp chain basically he has to do something stupid to get in (it takes practice and experience but the easiest way for me to learn is to go into training mode and set the cpu gief to throw out cr.mk and st.mk and st.mp randomly then try to react and punish). then figure out his walking patterns (I actually feel like this is the most efficient way to win the game), if u notice that he’s stupid walking fwd throwing out st.lk than throw out st.mp xx st.rh. I usually look for movement after they throw out random limbs sometimes they wable then throw a move out then wable, somtimes they will move back forth and back forth then throw out a limb. A lot of times they get afraid of st.mp and will try to stick cr.mk out but just stay out of range and punish. The biggest thing is getting over the initial hump of whiff punish and figuring out the actaully range of st.mp(which I swear is random as fuck sometimes) and cr.rh once u start whiff punishing it gets easier and easier and its made my ae game way better. And idk if its known but u can hit giefs lariat before he actually finishes the animation. I usually just wait until I think the active frames are over and st.mp it I alos think u have to time in between hits but its kinda hard for me to explain cuz its more intuition now and every once in a while it still trades.

ok so i applied this and also i tried something different, most giefs abuse his crouching jab, raw launchers completely nuke that, also, using his standing mk as an anti air helps a ton, i also applied what u said and it helped alot, almost A+ now because of it
