My thought is that they did a decent job on the comic, given the material they had to work with. I’m enjoying it, but I’m also not setting my expectations too high. “Cheap Shots” and other wastes of space need to go, though. Plus someone at Udon needs to be slapped for reprinting that ‘throws are cheap’ tripe, even if it was in a nostalgic fashion.
However, they get major bonus points for portraying Chunli correctly. THE VERY FIRST THING she does in her first fight in the comics is an immediate SA2 on some punk. The only way this could have been more accurate to how she really is, is if there was a side panel showing Justin Wong holding a joystick and doing QCFx2+K motions.
I got a question - besides the fact that we’re all fanboys and would buy any old piece of crap with the words “Street Fighter” written on it, what particular draw does this comic have over all the others?
Honestly, for myself, I can’t see too much that puts Street Fighter over all the other dozens of books I like, and I can’t justify buying so many every month as it is. I think Udon’s pretty good - I loved their Deadpool run, the Taskmaster mini was fucking awesome, and they have good art - maybe the best colouring in the industry. There’s also a mid 90’s level of cheesecake here - but that can be taken as a good or bad thing.
But you need writing! The story is slow, fragmented, and after the novelty of seeing your favourite character show (which is very nice) passes, there’s not a lot of reason for me to keep coming back every issue. And no offense, but I’m not going to pony up my couple of bucks for a comic book that I’m not excited to see every month.
I’m hoping you guys get the hang of it soon. It started off pretty good but I have to admit that I got kinda bored with it after a bit. Someone just let me know when it gets real good so I can start picking the book up again.
I think Capcom has them on a really short leash, which is why we haven’t seen as many adventurous, high-concept stories. It’s amazing when you think about, since the book still turns out so well. The draw to me, anyway, is that its a really fun book to read and look at. Its not perfect, but they’re getting better.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Don’t use the SF comic to judge Udon, look at their DS comic as more of an indication of what they can do with a decent story and some leeway from Capcom. I think all the better writers/artists went over to DS anyway…although I wouldn’t know about that. Or atleast, the writers/artist’s I personally liked better. I’m sure udon or Apathy-Inc would know a bit more about that. But yeah, seriously check out the DS comic. I’m more of a fan of SF in general, but DS is a better comic imo.
I just started getting into the SF comic books… the art is what really drew me in… the talent of the new artists is really good… when i have more time on my hands I will starting reading the comics… but overall the art is great…
Obviously jsut like the rest of you guys, i like the street fighter art very much. The background story is nice, the cheap shots are crazy, fan art isnt bad, and the rest of the extras are good.
Obviously i hate the SF comic storyline. Its not as good as Street Fighter Alpha movie considering most characters get rush, only appear once, have no important roles like fei-long, or just get thrown aside like dee jay and blanka. The fights so far are horrible and not as top tier as say wolverine vs. sabretooth. Im hoping for an improvements and i still havent seen my dream match of Evil-Ryu vs. Akuma, maybe it’ll never happen, oh well, only in CVS2 can such a dream come true. besides, i dont really know where the SF comic storyline is going. Is Ryu struggling with the dark hadou or looking for sagat or just playing around right now?
Like i say, I would’ve start off with the SF1 cast, then SFA cast and BAM to SF2 cast so every character would get more than their 15mins of fame.
Apart from the story which IMO is pretty decent considering what they have to work with. It’s one of the best things to ever happen to the SF franchise. I love it for the art mostly, which is spectacular.
I met the writer, Siu Chong, and I must say, the dialogue is impressive (#14: Side Story). His previous is reincarnated into this series well. My only beef about the story is the fact that the fights are more on the skirmishes part. Maybe Erik will hear the plea of the SF fans in their SF II. Still, awesome work.
I like the comic a lot. The focus is tight. The pacing is alright. They don’t spend too much time on stuff that doesn’t add much to the big picture. They chose to focus on a few characters and give everyone else cameo-like appearances… that only makes sense. I don’t want a 2-issue story arc devoted to E. Honda, and then another one about Blanka. Focusing on a few characters and two story arcs (ryu’s journey and the hunt for shadaloo) at the start makes perfect sense because people who are not extremely familiar with the SF universe are most likely to know the guys involved in these two story arcs.
People who don’t know anything about Streetfighter aren’t gonna give a hoot about the cameo guys anyway, so for now they’re just there to populate the list of faces to beat up. But if they were to attempt to give everyone equal time in the spotlight, new folks will get turned off because they’ll be like “What’s this book about anyway???” As it is they can still drop in later in the book and get more story treatment.
Now at the pace it’s going, it does look like the SF2 story is going to get wrapped up fairly quickly, compared to other more established comicbook titles… I got no problem with that. That tale wasn’t exactly meant to go on forever. It’s simply just the nature of the beast. SF2 has a beginning and an end, and it doesn’t take years and years for that story to unfold. What I do anticipate is Udon can really go nuts with the intervening years between SF2 and SF3, or even the SF3 story when it comes around, because those stories have barely been told. With a bit of planning they can really make the book last that way.
