Only L2 Focus ends up +5, and there’s always the risk of getting countered/broken before your focus attack hits. I’m guessing the best thing to do is to mix it in with the usual (safe) dashes and backdashes to make the opponent more wary of throwing out random reversals and getting punished.
Edit: Measured it wrong, subtracted 1 from advantage.
Focus after a Hayate isn’t safe if you’re playing someone who likes to mash specials. Remember, any special done as a reversal will break your focus. But, if you have someone like Chun or whoever who spams a poke as soon as they see you dash in, dash where you’re just in range to focus that shit, charge to lvl 2, and bring the pain. So far, shit like that has worked for me except against Cody, since his panic moves are also focus breakers…
If you perform the Hayate then hold focus to cancel out of the recovery then the focus does NOT have armor as you charge it. Any single jab will hit you out of it. I haven’t had a focus charge post hayate actually work, i stopped doing it because my opponents keep attacking me straight out of it.
It works decently well, so long as you aren’t actually canceling the recovery of the hayate with the focus. You have to mix it up, but it’s pretty good after a lp hayate, since the spacing is good enough for you to go over the opponent’s low poke.
Focusing a hayate to level 2 seems only good for mad mindgames. I’ll have to test the punishability of a level one focus attack after blocked hayate, but on hit going for the level 1 focus and forward dash is great. It happens hella fast, so you can easily land a karakusa against low level opponents. As soon as people catch on we’ll see blocking and baiting jumps and punishing becoming more prevalent. But yeah, I can see why Jwong was always going for it.
And also, her karathrow has crazy range. If you keep them pressured and land a few counterhits and make them fear mindlessly pressing buttons, the throw is almost free. No idea about how to set up kara karakusa really yet. I’ll have to play around.
Followup on the Focus Attack followup after a Hayate. Now since we’re at an even frame advantage, if one player uses a reversal 3 frame jab and the other does a reversal 3 frame throw, who wins? If it’s the jab then all you have to do after that setup to stop Makoto is mash jab, which would be hella stupid. If the throw wins, then at least you can condition them to fear the tech and throw in an occasional Tsurugi. Or you can be like me and after going 5 founds of getting it jabbed out, use Ultra 1 after the dash!
I’m pretty sure that grab beats jab in that situation, either way that is something that needs to be tested because it would be a good follow to shut down button pressing and make them want to either jump or crouch tech or back dash: all of which can be punished (except for some characters backdashes).
aka I <3 All of you guys (no homo) for being so proactive on the theory fighting
edit: left out reversals for their options (which will be easy to block on even frame advantage and then decide on the right way to punish)
If they like to mash that jab at even frames, IA Tsurugi. It will at least let you keep pressure on them. If they start buffering a DP, then you can dash up and block. The DP should come out as soon as the jab is blocked, allowing you to punish.
However, I do think throw beats jab, except maybe against Balrog’s braindead ass…
I know that IA Tsurugi should beat cr. jabs at a neutral situation, but not so sure against standing ones. But then again, those are slower so I should stick to normal throws to punish that. That’s what I get for fighting a jab-happy Ibuki.
Quick tsurigi may not generally beat jabs unless you have at least a little frame advantage. I believe that well timed jabs will catch you as you jump to do the tsurigi, even on crouch. Even 4 frame jabs have the potential to do this if they are timed exceedingly well.
Balrog is difficult because his wakeup can push you out enough to make your throw attempt whiff. That, plus the 3 frame jab, makes life very sad. So the best thing to do may be to keep moving into him on wakeup and get good at timing a kara throw, forward with f+lk or back with s.lk, to start just before he can start the jab.
