I remember playing Mortal Kombat 1 at Pizza Hut a ton of times and me and my cousins going back in fourth in every other fighting game possible. Good times.
I was 2 when SF came out, but due to Europe sometimes being a bit slow when it comes to this stuff, I actually recognize some of this stuff
I was like 11-12 when SFII came out, close but no OG cigar.
The real sign that you’re OG is when you spend time in the DMV line repeating the SF2 opening sequences to yourself and you can recall the CPU demo matchups (always root for Sagat in Sagat v. Bison even though he never wins ^_^)
i was only about 8 and i remember all that stuff. i guess i’m an og. semi og.
In the projects, we called it “OHHHHHHH you bitch!” It’s fucked up how the magazines didn’t tell you that they were saying Shoryuken until Gamepro made that Strategy guide. Every magazine just called it the Dragon Punch…and with the sound recording on the pre-super sf2 games, you couldn’t tell what the fuck they were saying. “Tiger” sounded like “Fiber”, “Dosu koi” sounded like “Hoot-hoy”, “Spinning Bird Kick” sounded like “Spinning Drop Kick”. “Tatsumakisenpuu kyaku” sounded like “tat sai tat dun ja”…those damn voice actors were to blame. They had to be. No way in hell can fucked up recording equipment make one word sound like another, and make japanese sound completely unintelligible.
LOL…
If you walked an extra six blocks because the convenience store in the 'hood had World Warrior for a quarter, while the pizza place down the street had it for 50 cents, you just might be OG…
Thanks to the original poster for trip down memory lane! Props!
I think they were using speech synthesis. It was very popular in video games.
Oh, and it’s “Attack Tech Whirljack”.
Did some of those. OG
i was 13 when ww came out
back in a time where it didnt matter if the home version was arcade perfect u just use to play it with friends till u got to the arcade for real comp
I remember when the 7-11 had 2 SF machines…hell I remember when 7-11’s still had arcade games! There was this donut shop a few blocks from my house next to Alberson’s and whenever my parents went shopping there, I would ask one of my folks for a buck so I could get a “soda”. Actually, the bastards who worked there eventually refused to make change and I had to buy a soda just to get quarters to play. One time, one of my older brother’s friends were in there (his high school was across the street) and saw me play and winning with Guile. He was like “You’re just like the kid from The Wizard!” Hehe…damn good times.
I also remember when Championship Edition came out it was such a huge deal…I was living in Pasadena, CA as a kid and while riding in the car with my parents we would drive by the Pak Mann arcade and their window had this HUGE painted banner with the CE logo with “Now Here!!”.
Also, we used to vacation in Vegas during the summer and going to Circus Circus or Excalibur and having a fucking room full of SF machines, all full. I went up against this one guy (I was, oh, 12?.. He was probably 16-17), picking Chun-Li and getting my ass kicked. Heh, back to the CPU for me.
fuck you guys i was like a year old when sf2 came out
i remember when fairview got mvc1
at the time iwasnt in sf, so cant say im og
but…you should add this:
when people push you off after youve put in 2 quarters to “teach you how to play”…you might just be
It’s kinda wierd.
Where I was from in NYC, we had plenty of the corner store/laundermat/pizza place/video store spots. At one time I knew almost every one of them in a 3 mile half-radius, what games were in them and how shittily they were maintained(and who maintained them a few years later). I didn’t even get good in SF2 till it came out on SNES and even then it took a while to get competitive. lol I don’t think I ever beat my bro cleanly in a fighting game till the PSX came out with Tekken 2 and SFEX as by then I could mostly beat him in SF2/Alpha. It’s kinda wierd, because he plays like a scrub now(no juggling, that shit’s cheap, stand up and fight) so it makes me think how horrible I was way back in the early days.
You know you’re OG when: you get evil stares from the comp if your cursor stays too long on CE bison
When you had to give a throw back whenever you threw somebody.
That is fucking awesome. I’ve never heard that before… though, in some ways, I’ve heard it countless times.
I started out on SFII when I was seven… I think I missed the OG boat by age difference alone. A lot of the talk around here still makes me feel old though. People who didn’t get into fighting games until MvC or something like that, and people who prefer pads instead of sticks. That used to be unheard of.
lol, I remember playing SF here in the Philippines when I was a kid. The place down the street was also a little convenience store but also had an SF machine.
The machine ran on time, not per death, so every 10 minutes or so, the machine would beep and you’d have to put more coins in.
I remember the biggest challenge was trying to beat the game before your time ran out…rofl. I remember I finally did it, there was a crowd building up behind me, ofcourse, I used Ken, and everyone was like “WHEN BISON IS BACKING UP, JUST BLOCK!!! BLOCK!!!” rofl, I remember I used to do the jump hk, c.hk…rofl, when I won the game with only one coin, everyone went nuts, high fiving each other and all that shit, rofl.
Oh, and lol, the random words that the characters would scream out were wrongly said by us…
“Ba tak tak ba loooookin!!!” when Ryu did his spinning kick…rofl.
“Suppinin sadda kik!” …Chun Li, lol.
“Chonic doom!!!” Guile…rofl.
“Chronic doom” is interesting. I should start using that.
If you remember the line of quarters that would get placed on the screen for the “play the winner” line and you remember where your quarter was at all times along with the people around you.
Ryu: “HAD SEX AT BOOT CAMP!!!”
^That’s what me and my friends heard when we first heard the hurracaine kick. Silly but at that time we didn’t know better, I was super young when SF2 came out but I still remember dropping coins into them at this arcade my grandma used to take me to on the weekends. It was in the carousel mall in San Bernadino, Alladins Palace or something, still have a coin from it. Now a days I heard that mall is all messed up but yeah I remember SF2 though I sure as hell wasn’t good or old enough to really live it.
