“Vanilla SF4” is Street Fighter 4 without ArcadeEdition / Super.
O… lol why they call it that?
In English vernacular, vanilla means “plain.” In gaming, it’s often used to denote the pre-expansion version of the game.
Oh ok. that makes sense. i remember the original 4 being kind of slim on character options and not really feeling very deep… its one of the reasons i stopped playing. Though ill never use most of them, the 35 options are definitely a nice way to keep at least my competition diverse lol
You’re making it as if they stop learning at knowning the fundamentals. The fundamentals are just that, stuff you learn before going to more advanced shizz. In other words, work on how to properly get in and counter/punish/etc. before working on combos.
That’s not really what I was getting at, but you did come to the opposite conclusion to me so maybe you got it somehow anyway. I think that you should learn how to make the most of opportunities before you determine how to set them up. But then there was that Ken I interview way back when where he said that Japanese players do it even more counter to that learning how to defend even before how to attack. So I’m willing to admit that there’s maybe multiple approaches. Again its a systematic thing I’m not suggesting that fundementals are somehow less important.
Warlock DXL, so u main Ibuki right? Play with any others?
no i main with Ryu/Evil Ryu and have some extensive backup time on Juri, Ibuki is more like one of those chars id like to learn but is a bit daunting for my skill level. very fast inputs required.
Definitely work on fundamentals and footsies first and foremost. Combos and mixups mean nothing when you get blown up mid screen.
Try to go and play at your locals as much as possible. Playing against other players live is the best way to get better, get perspective, learn matchups, develop yomi, and get introduced to the community. I remember seeing a video where Filipino Champ stated that he became good by going to EVERY local session and local tournament. I would kill to have a local weekly tournament near me.
Also, when you are playing, online or otherwise, try to win with good habits. In Casuals, Try to out footsie the other player, do all your safe jumps and option selects correctly (even if they can’t punish/reveral out of it), and don’t try to really take advantage of something they are obviously bad at. This isn’t to avoid beating them, but rather to prepare yourself to play against better players when you can’t get experience against them. I might not be saying this well, but this is an elusive and important balance to find in my opinion.
Lastly, as with every scene, get ready to meet some really nice people and some salty-as-fuck idiots who have no business outside of the time-out corner from grade school. A big part of fighting games is mental, and some people can’t really handle that. You might meet some people that go out of their way to embarrass you as a new player, are dicks, or are less than accepting in their local scene. Don’t let this phase you and do your best not become one of these people or waste your time and energy going on tilt about them (Like me :D). A lot of the people at my locals are like this nowadays, and I can tell you that it not only stops you from getting better, but it also reflects badly on you and hurts the scene.
what is this “yomi” i keep hearing about? lol
and yea i know there are dicks all over the place. but thats not really what worries me. in all honesty, i doubt many people would try to get in my face or talk shit in person. not trying to sound all “douche-tastic” about it lol but its the honest truth. I havent been in a fight in over a decade, and its not because i havent been open to one… lol That said, i suppose under the protection of an organized event with security and whatnot there might be some little twerp with the lack of dignity and better judgement to talk some shit. and i actually dont mind it as long as its respectful and doesnt breach my personal space boundaries lol someone walks up to me and gives me a light pimpslap or something after a match and im going to shoryuken his ass for real…
my only concern with the local scene was, like i said, being uninitiated in the franchise and looking like a complete fool trying to go play with the big boys before my time. people play these games to be challenged. i know its no fun when i play against my son in 2 player vs match lol aside from the whole “father/son bonding” thing of course. just speaking in terms of challenge.
Ooooo. Cant help with E.Ryu, but I can speak on Juri:
BEST WEAPONS: Poke: c.MP, c.MK - Antiair: c.MP, c.HP and you can start combos with nuetral jump HK then c.MP xx shinsuken xx Super. And stick with the NUETRAL jump HK kuz that foward jump shit just aint gonna work… Just ome things i started out with when I was a Juri noob. Hope it helps.
Finally got around to getting a few vids up. Let me know what you guys think i should focus on. I do know i was button mashing a bit at times but hey… stress levels at peak in online matches lol for me at least.
apologies in advance for the crappy quality, and the jackass who texted me in the middle of the video lol

It’s a Japanese term for “knowing the mind of your opponent.”

i was playing with Ibuki a bit more today and actually learned her target combos (well… some of em lol) and they are nice and fast to whip out, which makes the timing actually a bit easier. i can see how she would be powerful in her own right just for those combos. im going to have to play with her more often. any tips for newbie ibuki users?
one more against a Honda user. I dont get the chance to fight any Hondas so im still learning what he is capable of. But nevertheless, i almost had the fight lol

I’m not very good against gief and I don’t play Ryu, but I’m pretty sure its a bad idea to stand next to him when you knock him down. You’re pretty much asking to get grabbed. Against Dan, you can attack after he missed the ultra and fell. Not sure why you stood there. Against Honda, I don’t think it’s safe to throw fireballs when he’s close to you. That guy used the buttslam alot. When he used a fullscreen ultra or super, you could’ve jumped over it as it was coming. Also, when you go back it seems like you’re just holding jump back. Maybe try walking or backdashing back?
I’m not very good though so I don’t know if this’ll help much. Have you tried using Ultra 1? For me, it’s an easier Ultra to use.
still not very good with dashing, and i dont know these chars very well. i dont get the chance to fight either of those 3 very often, and Honda is the least of them. (even seeing Dan once is once too often… that character is a waste of CD space…)
Are there any resources out there that provide a chart/list of characters moves, and what opponent/move it is good to use against as a reliable punish? Been trying to deal with some odd characters online lately. been seeing a lot of Blankas and Guiles and Chun-Li’s and Hondas and other more infrequently challenged characters. Been trying to find moves for the shoto type characters (i use ryu/evil ryu) to use to counter chars like Blanka, Honda, and Chun-Li. When they turtle up or go flat on the ground they always catch me sideways… its annoying lol
You dont really need a “punishment list” you just need the frame data of two characters.
The if the activation of a move is shorter than a moves recovery frames on whiff or block = punishment. In a nutchell. I’m sure someone will come behind me and proclaim how wrong I am.
ROFL yeah that seems to be the trend here. Theres always a correction to be made. Games like these generally tend to create scientifically precise followers. But your response does make sense. I have never really delved into frame data. The ones ive looked at here were typewritten and hard for me to read easily. Ive seen some online that were actual cross charts. But i need to find those for every character in the game… not going to be easy lol
