Yang Q&A: Ask simple questions here!

I’m sure this sounds like a really dumb question, but what can I do to level my game up? I’ve been playing pretty much every day since the game came out and I made huge improvements when I first picked up Yang, but since then I’ve just been sitting around the 2200-2400 pp range. I still win the same matchups I’ve won in the past and I’m still losing the same matchups I’ve lost (mainly Bison). Any tips as to what I can do to get past this ceiling? Also, it would be great if any other Yang user would want to maybe get some games in and give some tips. Thanks.

I really enjoy playing as Yang in AE. My only problem is that i have a hard time using his dashing move. Other than that hes really great when it comes to combos. A personal favorite of mine in jump in LP, crouch LP, LK, LK, LK Senkyuutai. Absolutely fantastic. and its a great combo the tag some damage and get out.
You also have a couple of great openings. You can simply jump in and start it or you can even jump in using Raigekishuu. Any suggestions on better
ways to use his dash though?? I have practices so much with it but every time it seems like he just gets to the other side of the opponent, and with the time it takes to recover its way to risky to use in an actual match.

Throw up a video or two of your Bison games and let us see what you’re doing wrong. Hit the lab and figure some anti-Bison OSes (i.e, jump in OS U2 to beat teleport-happy Bisons). Watch better players than you play those same characters.

I assume you’re talking about his command dash.

You don’t start a combo, command dash, and continue with a combo (unless you’re in Seiei-Enbu). EX Dash, however, is a good escape tool because it’s invinc. from hit and projectiles (but not throws) for the first 15f; it’s similar to Abel’s EX Roll and should be treated like it.

The only time you use command dash in a combo is during Seiei-Enbu (Super). That leads to basic strings like cl.hp xx lk command dash (cross up) loop for midscreen.

Thanks for the advice, but I don’t have any way to upload videos from my xbox. I plan on getting the PC version some time soon though and I should be able to record that. In terms of OSes, I’ve been doing cross-up j.MK OSed with an EX dp after a dp combo but that seems to whiff on a Devil’s Reversal (or whatever that move is called.) Will U2 whiff on the same thing? Is there another OS I can do that will cover all of Bison’s wakeup options?

Unfortunately i dont remember the name of the move or the command at the moment but its not the charge cancel. Its the move where he actually dashes across the screen. Its not a huge deal though. Ive been working around it.

From my experience no one has a move that covers ALL of someones wake up moves. The best thing that i have found to do if your having a hard time with a certian character it to go into your practice mode and choose the character that your having a hard time with. Practice against the computer controlled character until you can almost tell what there gonna do before it happens. Once you feel comfterable with your play style and tactics then go to VS CPU mode and really put it to the test on a match by match basis. I had the same problem against Zangief due to both of them beint med-close range characters. But after a while in practice mode i was able to get a pretty solid stragity against how he playes by trying many many different things. Also against Bison he can be a little tricky due to the teleport sopts that he has. I have found that using the Torou Zan or Senkyuutai usually keeps me pretty safe. Just make sure that you dont start building a pattern for your oppionant to start learning otherwise your
going to get punished pretty fast. And theres always the safe block the incoming charge move and counter with a throw. Worst case is you end up canceling out each others throw. Just make sure you have a back up plan. Hope this helps!!

lol i hope this doesnt sound too noobish, but ever since i picked up yang i feel like im too dive kick happy, and i feel like my rushdown has become really unsafe. when exactly does someone use a dive kick?

For me dive kicks are great to keep an opponent guessing or even trading blows when your fighting someone like ken, ryu, etc. Other than that i have used em to start off some of my combos or even to just poke for damage. One of the biggest problems is that if you start doing it to much then your opponent is going to start catching on to your “strategy” and he/she will punish you for sure. I always try to have two to three moves ready as a just in case. Example: I dive kick, what am i gonna do if we trade blows? what am i gonna do if it goes through? etc. Its a good strategy to have. Again though thats how i play. Use your practice mode to build some strategy of your own! Its also great to use that in order to see what move flow smoothly from the dive kick. Hope this helps.

This helped me:

I was trying to find some corner resets with yang but when I dk in the corner it didnt matter if they held toward or back they could still block. Does anyone knows what causes this?

What are some good option selects vs backdashers? I was fighting a rog in tournament and could not beat his back dashing. Os roll is too slow. Stand hp wouldn’t reach, and sweep wouldn’t work either.

Are there any other os’s that are good for back dashing? Ex dp/rekka? Ultra 1/2? Ugh. I’m so mad right now.

I use:
lk, lk+hk for shitty backdashes (Cody).
lk OS mk roll or U2 for regular backdashes (Ryu).
lk OS EX roll for far, quick backdashes (Rog, Chun).

This won’t work because cr.lk is not chainable, so you’ll get cr.lk, cr.hk everytime. You have to do cr.lp, cr.lp+cr.hk for Yang.

I’m 99% positive OS sweep catches rog…I’ve used it before. But EX Roll is the most reliable one and catches every backdash in the game. HK roll also does work, but depending on your timing and when you’re OS’ing it, it can be blocked. I’ve mixed results with it against Chun-li.

Odd. I’ve had it come out before. Probably just me messing up the execution.

Haven’t had time to test this in the lab, but can you punish pokes with Yangs HP rekka? I know it has a lot of range but can it be used as a wiff punisher similar to Fei’s rekka? I think his HP rekka has enough range to punish most wiffed sweeps and forwards…
Anyone tested this?

Ive tried it. for the most part its come off 50/50. I think that its because he moves forward while doing it so if your timing is a little off then you still get hit. I usually try to go for the HK Senkyuutai. Its always been safer for me.

Hey wanted to do a little follow up on rog. EX DP works, but if you don’t want to burn meter or corner (rog afraid of command throw?) you can os stand MK. You’ll tag rog with the stand MK if he backdashes and you’ll hit him with launcher if he does a wake up tap or ex upper.

Does anyone know what kind of advantages / disadvantages Yang is at when using Target Combo 3 (Jump MK xx MK Dive Kick) on block?

As far as I can tell, you have to sacrifice a safe jump and cross up in order to use the target combo properly. Right now I don’t see it being all that practical, but maybe someone else has come up with a better application for it.

Hard/Impossible to tell because it’s a jumpin attack, so the frame advantage afterwards depends on height. You should be at heavy advantage in most circunstances though, meaning it’s safe to go into a blockstring.

It works as a double overhead and can catch people off guard. It’s also gimmicky useful against tall characters like Seth and Sagat, you can jump in with that target combo and jump back with mp from a triple overhead, Daigo style. Once they catch onto it, start going for lows.

After testing, probably around +6. I could get a cl.hp to combo off of a deep target combo.
