They say they are. I think they need to overhaul how they price their product. Too many games selling for full price for waaaay too long.
And I dunno why gaming companies haven’t just cut out the middle man. Wanna make more from your games? Let me buy the game from you when it goes gold. Then you mail it to me. No more middleman at Walmart, or Toys R Us, or Future Shop, or EB Games, or Gamestop.
If somebody is willing to spend 20 bucks less on a game, to get it used instead of new, then maybe you should just sell new for less money. And get rid of the rest of your DRM bullshit too please.
The biggest flaw in the argument against Used games and piracy is the fact that you’re assuming that the company is going get that sale if there wasn’t a 2nd hand market. While true that some people will go honest what about the people who simply don’t have that kind of money to drop over 60 bucks on games every month? Piracy I could give 2 shits about since there is no money that exchanges hands at all. 2nd hand market isn’t a complete evil.
Example: Person A never really played an RPG before and is uneasy on dropping the money on a new game so he borrows it/buys it 2nd hand from Person B. Person A finds out that he actually enjoys these type of games and that puts their priority higher up on his list that he’d feel more inclined to drop the money on the game on the sequal when it comes out.
That’s only 1 scenario though. It could easily go the other way and he tries the game out and ends up disliking it thus being put off from the genre but it does give that chance to bring in another consumer who may drop more money on it…especially when it’s a game that’s out of print.
Darkness 2 about to come out and there are people looking for the first game 2nd hand because they’re interested in the sequal.
Generally a pirate is going to pirate the first game and then pirate the sequal.
Yep that is actually very true. I’ve known people who get so sick of the DRM that they actually look for cracked versions SO THEY CAN PLAY WHAT THEY PAID FOR WITHOUT THESE DUMB RESTRICTIONS! (Not yelling at you, rather at idiot business men). I mean every tech guy I have known does this. What is the first thing they do when some copyright protection is restricting what they want to do? Find a way around it! In this day and age there are too many technically experienced members of society to stop them from doing this.
The head developers for steam actually said that piracy is a result of service issues. If the mainstream method becomes inconvenient and problematic people will go to piracy as a result of it. Even though Steam isn’t perfect, it has actually helped curb piracy because of how simple it is to get games. iTunes did the same thing for music where people are more willing to shell out money on music because it is simple and easy.
Frustrating your customer general produces the opposite result and it is something that designers and corporate executives don’t understand.
Excellent point. Most places don’t carry new versions of older games. Case in point, its pretty hard for me to find SFIV or older versions of NHL or certain other games. Yet I can find used versions of them. So now stores are supposed to carry extra copies of old games in case somebody gets nostalgiac? Or you’re now asking people to go through a fucking marathon just to order an older copy of a game.
or they will just fucking pirate.
This is why we shouldn’t allow people with business degrees to run gaming companies. Fucking everywhere I look, I see businessmen in position they know nothing about. My boss has a business degree. He has all these great ideas to make me work faster, and harder, and to make more money for the company. Too bad my job is to fix PC’s, and every idea he has come up with has nothing to do with this. Oh boy, instead of helping my customer, i should instead try to sell them a service they dont need nor would benefit them, especially considering the state of their PC. Or having me install certain programs onto client’s pc’s, EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE A VIRUS AND THAT SHOULD BE DEALT WITH FIRST.
Seriously, leave gaming to gamers, and pc’s to pc’s. Business minded individuals need to shut the fuck up, and stop fucking every got damn thing up
After the Steam hack, I don’t think I’ll ever purchase a game from the shitty service that forces you to sign in to play a game that you bought from there. It’s better than Origins, but it’s a not vast improvement. I’ll just stick to purchasing a physical copy or torrenting old games that no publishing company cares about anymore.
It’s also been said that the profits from Steam are used to fund Gabe’s food bill.
You do know that the Steam forum and your Steam account are 2 separate accounts, right? If you went and used the same info on both, that’s your fault .
The industry needs to try harder to foster a spirit of hording to accompany the ravenous consumerism they encourage.
Its not right that kids are going to trade in COD 8 for COD 9 when it comes out, they should be taking pride in lining up ALL the cod games alphabetically on their shelf. Really, the issue is people having other hobbies. If people were to just wake up and realize just how much joy having piles of games is, they wouldn’t WANT to trade in their old games for crappy prices, the simple satisfaction of knowing those games will be your friends for the rest of your life should be enough to keep them by your side forever. The console/pc debate that sprung up is just stupid, you should have ALL consoles AND a pc for exclusives, its like people have no idea how or desire to maximize their consumption.
Honestly, is it that hard to spend a couple hundred bucks on must have games every month? No, just man up and tell your friends and family to leave you alone and quit wasting your money whatever it is you buy instead of games.
though logical and well thought out, that isn’t true for two reasons. #1 the reason new games are priced higher is that is where all the money is made. with the exception of the Wii, all consoles are sold at a lost. All money is made in software sales. #2 when you take inflation into account, games are cheaper today. today a game costs about 2 tanks of gas of the average game, min 90’s a game cost 4 tanks of gas. The new games can’t get much less expensive than they already are.
It depends. Minecraft is probably an excellent example. There were a good number of people who pirated that game iirc but in the end they ended up enjoying the game so much that they went honest for it. That actually happens more in the PC sector than anything. Consoles though? Can’t say the same. I have barely heard any stories of people pirating their games on the 350 or Wii and then going ‘I enjoyed that’ then turning around and dropping the money on the game. Not saying that they don’t exist or there’s exceptions (Last Story, Xenoblade, and just games in general that haven’t been announced for other regions) but they’re harder to find. Most of the time when it comes to pirating stuff on the consoles all I hear is ‘Duh huh huh! You actually paid for your copy?’.
Missing what point, the fact that “PC gaming has more to offer than the big 3 genres on the platform”? While the PC does offer more games than what’s popular on the platform, most of them suck. Conversions of console games to the PC suck ( e.g. Vanilla SF4, Dead Rising 2, Blazblue, Mega Man Legends), indie PC games are a fucking joke, and undefinable just suck ass.
When it comes down to it all, shooting games, RTS’, wrpg’s, and MMO’s are the only games that excel for the PC, because* they were primarily developed for the PC*. If those games are your cup of tea, go ahead and waste your $ on making a high-end gaming rig so you can get the “best gaming experience”. I dislike those kinds of games since they’re uncreative and soulless trash.
The only gaming that’s done on my PC is emulation. I don’t intend to get a high end PC so I can emulate games high end shit like the Model 3 games.
