Best X-Men movie ever, period. Thank Goodness, because the last 3 movies were absolute trash (Not counting First Class since that was actually good). I guess Bryan Singer “can” make a good Comic Book movie when in the chair, it only took multiple tries…right?
I mainly watched this movie for James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender because they were so good in First Class that my hope was that it would carry through into DOFP, and it didn’t disappoint. Stewart and McKellen were great too whenever they were on screen.
Very happy it wasn’t entirely a Wolverine and Co. movie. Hoping the next X-Men movies will showcase more McAvoy and Fassbender, their chemistry is so good it makes me want to keep watching the X-Men movies.
Great little movie, all things considered. Well-paced, heartfelt, great action, and I freaking loved the Quicksilver scenes.
That said… I have the feeling that this wouldn’t have gotten the RT rating it got if it wasn’t for the fact that it follows up what’s supposedly a terrible movie (which I can’t comment on, as I haven’t seen Origins). A good movie feels all the better when it’s following a bad one. The “hang on this is actually GOOD” effect isn’t one to be underestimated.
Likewise, if Winter Soldier had come after a really shitty Marvel-produced movie rather than a string of awesome-at-best, average-at-worst flicks, it would’ve been received MUCH better.
Just my theory, anyway. That doesn’t take away from this being a really good, entertaining and fun movie. Now I’m actually looking forward to the Apocalypse one, which is a surprise to me.
Two caveats, though: First REALLY DEFINITELY at least watch one of the older X-Men movies (preferably X2) before you watch this. This movie assumes some familiarity with the movie versions of the characters, and gets a lot of its pathos from the recognition effect. Without that knowledge, a lot of it is just people jumping around while doing flashy stuff.
Second, the 3D isn’t really worth the extra dough. There are some neat scenes, but on the whole it’s less distracting to simply not have it there.
Fassbender is fucking godlike.
Shoutouts to Mckellen with that Magnetic Tempest.
Trask commanded every scene he was in. Quicksilver was AWESOME. And I wish that they could get the OG voice actor from the X-Men 90’s Cartoon for “that man” in the post-scene credits.

One thing I’ve always been curious about with Mytisque…her transformations always seem to be someone that she sees, does she ever ‘create’ a person? Can she change up ‘specific body parts’?
I’m just saying, being able to take certain chicks and…improve them as she sees fit could leave to some RIDICULOUS thirst traps…

Agreed that the deaths of some of the characters were pretty violent. I liked that. Shit, they chopped off Human Torch’s arm and the dude was still fighting his heart out. That was a true last stand. Iceman having his head ripped off and dying seems like bullshit to me. Can’t this dude survive in ice form if he’s shattered and shit?

One thing that bugged me is that Quicksilver is probably one of the most powerful mutants on the planet. You could argue that he’s more powerful then his father. So why not use him during the final battle and where was he during the last stand against the sentinels?
