House of M is a good read. It’s a good tour of the Marvel Universe, not just the X-Men’s world. And if you’re not a continuity pornographer, it should be very fun.
Morrison’s New X-Men run is probably the best straight up X-Men there’s ever been. Whedon/Cassaday’s Astonishing is very different from it, but still a fantastic follow-up.
Brian K. Vaughan’s run on Ultimate X-Men (begins with volume 9, “The Tempest” and ends with volume 13, “Magnetic North”) is also superb. Yeah, it’s not the continuity that you might be familiar with, but if you want a great X-Men story, that’s what to read. The characters are familiar, but the stories are fresh interpretations of classic themes.
I think Apocalpyse: The Twelve is whack. X-Treme X-Men is by the guy who wrote the X-Men in the late '70s and '80s… Except his writing style hasn’t evolved since about 1979 and his work peaked back in '82. I think there are also people here on SRK who like Academy X (and its predecessor, the 2000’s New Mutants), but I cannot recommend it all. The earlier volumes that are written by DeFelippis and Weir are actually pretty decent, but the current writers, Kyle and Yost are nothing special.
zephy just doesn’t like kyle, and yost. i’m impartial to them. but after reading x-force, i’m starting to like them. plus if they have a guest appearance by “rhymes with fedpool”, then i’ll love them
I don’t like Kyle and Yost, but I don’t hate their work, either. Not like how I hate the work of, say, Daniel Way or someone. I just happen to think that everything that I’ve ever read that’s written by Kyle and Yost is completely generic and often below-average.
thanks for the tips. i am reading new x-men right now and so far it’s pretty good. damn morrison really makes emma frost a badass.
the only reason i didn’t want to read house of m is because i basically know what happens. AND it’s sooo freaking long. i was also never found of the ultimate books either. i might try ultimate x-men though and try volume 9. i might be surprised. Thanks again dude.
The thing with House of M is that almost all of those crossover and tie-in stories are pretty much skip-worthy. The HoM: Spider-Man, HoM: Fantastic Four, HoM: Iron Man - all pointless and lousy comics. Just read the main story, which is only 8 issues long.
hmm i always thought i had to read the tie-ins…just like what i’m doing now with secret invasion. if it’s only 8 comics, that’s not bad at all. since it’s so small, i’ll check that one out as well.
house of m and civil war are pretty much stand alone stories. nothing really happens in the tie ins. SI has shit happening in all three avengers books. read bp #39, and secret invasion x-men. it’s all the x-men (minus wolvie) vs the skrulls. yes. all of the x-men.
The only House of M tie-ins that are actually worth reading are The Pulse and maybe Captain America. Those are each only one issue. But really, you can live without reading any of those.
SI’s tie ins explain a lot so i thought that it would be the same for house of m. i avoided civil war too because there were too many books. now that i know they can be read as stand alone, i’ll definitely check them out.
shit…i’m too addicted to comics now. i can’t stop!
i just read civil war and captain america 25. i really didn’t like it much but it clears things up during secret invasion. i just got a shit load of deadpool so i’m going to read that next. thanks for the suggestions
Man I’ve been reading Essential Xmen Vol 1 (Xmen #1-24) I couldnt stop laughing at times from the silly puns that Iceman was saying at times. Man Iceman was a fucking brat jeez. Prof was dayum near a tyrannt lol Beast was a bit a of wise ass but i liked it.
X-Force has Kyle and Yost; GET ON THAT SHIT NIGGA!
Ellis’ Astonishing is gonna get better soon hopefully, the first issues were merely a warm-up.
Also the Boxes mini for Astonishing is pretty much exploring the various versions of the X-Men in the Marvel multiverse.
I only skimmed through it but it seems good. Plus Adi Granov is the artist for the 2nd story in the book.
The bear in the latest issue of X-Force…is that the same one that nearly killed Danielle in New Mutants way back in the day? Is this some spirit that only targets native american mutants with “star” in their last name?
