I am going to start redesigning the Texas Showdown website pretty soon.
There were some features that people did like, and inevitably, there were some features that need to be improved on. I’d like to have this thread contain any suggestions and comments in order to improve the functionality of the site.
For example:
There was a pre-registration system that was implemented, and used at the time of registration. That system was a remarkable improvment from that of TS3, and I’d like to improve it further. People were able to pre-register on the site, and at time of the actual registration, people just stated their name, and a predetermined list of games that wanted to participate in were shown. If they wanted to add in games, they could.
Personally, I’d like to cut down on the time that a person registers in. Nobody likes to stand in line for a 20-40 min chunk of time, and would be better served by getting in some playing time.
I’d like to implement a bracket system that would be automatically determined, based on a seed, location, amount of people (, and possibly, APEX standings<-- depends of feedback). The large brackets would remain in place, I would like to create a program that would automatically create the initial bracket placement. This step alone would be able to save lots of time from final registration to the first match. I would like to hope that this automatic bracket placement would be accurate, take into account seeds and byes, and that people from similar cities would not have to face each other early on unless necessary.
These are the initial thoughts that I have. Feel free to add any suggestions and comments!
That would be a great program that can make those brackets but just make sure it isn’t like the one austin used that won’t allow late registration to be entered after a few matches have been played. btw early thnaks for having the site up again and trying to make this showdown better than the last.
A few of you may have noticed that the “logo” designs for TS4 were not consistient. The T-Shirt had a logo, the website had another logo and the posters and DVDs had yet another logo. If there is any goodies that go along with TS5 (posters, dvds, promo materials, etc), I will want them to contain the same logo that the www.txshowdown.com site will have. Keep in mind that the TS5 logo will NOT be that of the avatars that I have recently been seeing in the past few weeks.
Also feel free to add in any comments about the actual design of the website itself. I am open to any ideas about color, graphic placement, etc.
There shouldn’t have to be late registration, in theory. People should not be able to arrive late and not be penalized for it. However, my system will only create the inital matches. If there are byes within the bracket, then late registrants will be put in. If there are no byes, then that person will be SOL. Time may be an important factor based on the location of the actual tournament, and we can ill afford to have people coming in late. It’s also not fair to those who did arrive on time.
Cool shit, I’ll add some suggestions… maybe there is a way to let ppl pre-pay for the tourny, that way they won’t have to wait in line if they’ve already played ahead of time. Maybe you will only let the ppl that ONLY pre-registered in the site pre-pay. That way you can keep track of who payed on the site and there isn’t alot of confusion and random “but I paid” shit going on. You can kind of do it the way cmutt already has sg set up where they check in at the door, OR Maybe have like two lines when ya’ll are ready to sign ppl in. One line for ppl that signed up and one for ppl that haven’t. If they have they can just get a check mark by they’re name and a tag and they can go fuck themselves after that for all you care. I think that’d be alot quicker and the paying line would b alot shorter and get ppl registered that haven’t already quicker also. Somthing along the lines of that.
Maybe you can set up a paypal account on the txshowdown site and let ppl pay from there or even buy or donate stuff from the site. Like t-shirts, dvd’s, or even to pre-pay for the tourny like I mention b4.
Also are there gonna b any flyers made? Or something of that nature, I’d really like to draw something up for TXshowdown, you can ask Kensou if I’m any good :xeye:
Well, accepting pre-registration money could be an option. Now that would all depend on me deciding what road to take. I have a possible option with just taking CC’s - since SG now has a CC machine in place. Or there is the PayPal option - I would have to charge an additional fee($1) in order for me not to take the hit that PayPal imposes.
Do you have a sample of your art? I’d like to see it.
Yea I think it would help out A TON really, alot shorter lines, alot of ppl can pay when they have the money ready, and alot of ppl can have more time to play games. CC’s would b cool with me shit, I’d rather do that then paypal to tell you the truth. Also, I doubt anyone will have a prob with the extra buck, but either way is cool…
Yea I did actually, had to reformat this pc at work but I’ll scan some copies later and send em over to wherever you can recieve em. I’ll try to get ahold of Kensou, maybe he has the copies I sent to him awhile back. I’ll get em for ya though… laterz
Ok I found the old thread I made in the Fan art section where I put up some of my pix, check em out, let me know what you think…Not the best ones but gives you an idea.
This is just a thought but it adds dramatic effect. Post some quotes up on the front page or something from players that have been there or name brand players to add a little motivation and advertising to new comers and veterans to TS. Not saying put a whole lot of crap or anything but a few lines here and there. Like this for example:
I got these quotes from the TS4 DVD
“…one of thee best tournaments outside of EVO that you could possibly go to.” -Jason Cole-
this has nothing to do with suggestions…stupid ass…
Javi…where the fuck have you been? :xeye: i agree with Kakarotte about pre-pay registration…makes life a whole lot easier…and this time, have an actual trailer…let’s not flake out this time plz…
it would be good if there were better result pages the nlast year javi, i rember seein, first day results and seconday results, but they were very incomplete… =/ will there be a trialer this year btw?
If you’re looking for a new program from scratch to do that, then perhaps I could be of assistance. I’ve actually wanted to write a bracket program for some time now just as a fun little side project, and now I might have reason to actually go ahead with it.
If you’re interested, let me know what this program would need to be capable of, and we can go from there.
Good idea. The intention was there to include results as they happen, but some things came up. I had to run a few brackets, and on the 2nd day, some idiot wound up spilling liquid on my monitor.
If I could be relieved of most of the bracket running duties, then I could patch in results a lot quicker.
I’d like include some better looking results… might tie into APEX and XML that shit.
It will certainly depend on the system being used. No matter the system, I want this app to be database-driven.
One option will be the normal double elimination brackets system. I need the system to determine the amount of people, and the “bracket” needed dependent on size. For example, if there are 7 people, then the system would determine that an 8-man bracket is needed. If there are 45 people, then a 64-man bracket is needed.
The system would also determine seeds (entered manually), and place them in the correct location of the bracket. The system would also account for byes, and give precedence to the seeds for the byes.
These should be the determining factors, in terms of placement of individuals in the bracket: Seed, Region, State, City.
Right now I don’t care about advancing the bracket, since most would want to see them on the laminated sheets anyways. But if you want to go further, then correct bracket placement based on wins or losses should be included.
Now if it’s in round robin format, well… I hadn’t thought of that one yet. Running the RR in such a system shouldn’t be too difficult. It’s just determining the actual pools is where the hard part should be.
This system should be available on the web, so programming in VB or ASP would be optimal, since that’s what I’m going to use.
