Last night, Wrestling.City Asia came down to Malaysia and I got ringside seats. It’s my first ever live wrestling event and I’d not heard of most of the wrestlers but that didn’t matter - they played up their gimmicks and characters so well everyone got into it.
Highlights:
The first match was an 8 man tag match - Team Outer Space from Hong Kong vs…a Singaporean team whose name I don’t recall, but had a guy who was called Mighty Mighty. Outer Space won in a fun opener.
Next was another Singaporean guy, Greg Glorious, who is Better At Life Than You. As a foreign Singaporean on Malaysian soil, he was absolutely 100% a heel, and cut simple effective promos before he fought a Malaysian guy who wasn’t that impressive. But I understand our scene juuuust started.
Then we had a tag team match, Bad Company vs two Russian guys, Crimson and White. Strangely the crowd remembered Crimson’s name but not White’s, so Crimson had to prompt us to get White’s babyface in peril part going. All four did great, but Crimson had the best arsenal.
Fourth match was the first highlight match of the night, a Russian guy named Anton vs the Neon Ninja, Facade. Fun match that was both serious and comedy. Match starts, Facade kicks Anton a lot, Anton calls a time out. “NO. WRESTLING. WE WRESTLE.” And then Facade sort of like slumps, goes yeah ok…fine…we’ll wrestle. 20+ minutes match that was fun. Kind of overstayed its welcome a little.
Intermission. Had corn.
Second half begins with local Malaysian Pro Wrestling champ Shaukat vs evil Thailander Paksa (funnily enough, Paksa in Malay means force). Lots of crowd members shouting out Paksa chants, like FORCE YOURSELF TO LOSE. While the champ Shaukat had a lot of support in what was essentially a squash, this match I found to be the most boring by far.
Then SONJAY DUTT the only guy I knew faced off against the Japanese Eita. Babyface vs babyface and these guys are really fast. Great match, Sonjay won, he put over Eita at the end - apparently Eita’s only been doing this for five years? Impressive and faaaaast.
Next was a hardcore match, Joker vs Ivan (?) the Locomotive and it was insane. Everyone was jumping out of their seats and swearing when we saw the brutal damage. Chairshots, apron bombs, ladder + chair combinations, brawl to the outside, through the table, suplex onto chairs on their side (legs up) from top turnbuckle…whooh!
Joker seemed maybe…a little plain for a guy with a Joker gimmick? The other guy, Ivan, was this huge monster of charisma. Lots of fun. People shouted WE WANT TABLES, he looked right at the audience, held his arm out, “Wait.” When on the apron, he was like “WATCH. NASTY BUMP!” and then Joker countered and he was like “No, not me!” Even when Joker was ‘dead’, on his knees with his head resting on Ivan’s crotch, Ivan was like, “Suck?” and the crowd chanted “Please don’t suck!”
Joker injured himself badly on the chair on the sides spot - broke his nose? It was bleeding profusely. Sorry guy.
Main event was the Singaporean Pro Wrestling Championship match. Masa from Japan was the champ going in, CIMA also from Japan and Andruew (no typo) from Singapore were the challengers. Like Greg earlier, Andruew knew he was the heel and played it up to the max, complete with evil foreigner accent. PHFUCK YOUUUUUUUUUU
The match was great. Masa and CIMA were workhorses for sure, and Andruew played his part of strong yet opportunistic heel. Fast and roller coaster paced to the end, until a ref bump, some heeling, and Andruew walked away with the titles, that filthy fucking fuckering fucker. Everyone was on their feet, Masa couldn’t believe it and peaced out, CIMA stayed behind to do a great broken English promo that promised them to return and do more shows.
I had no idea who most of them were, but it didn’t matter. Everyone loved it, and it was magical.
Oh yeah
He is usually doing these shows with a group of them. Like i would have expected to read horiguchi, t hawk, yoshino, and maybe flamita
Flamita should be a guy wwe actively seeks for the cwc. Guy left aaa, and sure he might be the same niche as kalisto. But wcw had Juvi, Rey, Ultimo, and Kidman all doing the flips.
I’d love to see DASHING Cody come back and a sleaze ball character in LU.
I won’t be surprised if he ends up going to EVOLVE for a few stints. Even with them being a feeder system to wwes feeder system they get to book who they want 99% of the time.
The future is bright for young Cody. I wanted cosmic waste land to become more fleshed out but oh well.
Dude was the same size as savage, bret and hbk. Bigger than dbry and rey rey. Much more handsome than Christian. Much more of a worker than miz. And so much better on the mic than rollins.
These guys all were world champ.
I really see Cody as a top face for njpw not a heel.
i like cody…but when you put him up against those guys…its hard to see him as champ. not because he doesnt work hard…but when you compare him to the guys you listed…they are fucking world class. cody is great but was he world class great. everyone you listed bar rollins and the miz inspired generations of future stars. but as long as cody grinds hard…i think he can eventually reach that level.
