Would you...?

Would you pay to enter a raffle in which the winner of the raffle gets to play against three “pros,” and if that raffle winner beats all three pros 3/5, he/she gets $5,000? $1,000?

Assume this happened at a large event. =)

is it for charity or just to make a buck?

To help with venue fees and the insurance cost of the promotion.

pfff! yeah! umm, I wouldnt care if I won 1 or 5 cuz id win baby!

OooOo… and 5 bucks would prolly be the best price for people
unless its like 5k, then like 10

Nope. For charity of course I would, but if I wanted to play a “pro” I would just money match them.

i’d do it for the chance to play against a pro

i guess i could money match them, but they are busy people and probably would want more than 5$

You can potentially turn a $5 raffle ticket into $5,000. Odds are you won’t get the chance to play the pros, but it’s a lot better than playing in a $5,000 money match and losing.

Well if you don’t believe you can beat a pro in a $5,000 money match then why the fuck would you have a $5,000 money match?

I don’t get it. Please enlighten me.

You’re not going to beat the pro anyways to begin with. I read your first post it was bull shit to begin with.

“beats all three pros 3/5,”

You’re not going to random out three pros back to back to back. Only way you’re winning that is if you’re legitimately better then they are.

I rather just pay $30bucks ($10 per each) play all 3 of them in 2/3, take my butt kicking and ask them a few questions to improve my game after wards.

For charity that’s another story, of course I will help out. For your own personal gain? I rather not. If you need money for venue I can just donate it. This is basically a lottery where when you win, you don’t get shit but a butt kicking. At least the Megamillions lottery gives you millions of dollars. This lottery just gives you a chance… that is well microscopic.

win a raffle to get a chance to get your ass kicked…great

Hell, just go to WNF, same thing

I dont see this going over well.

It’s not like the top players are these untouchable monoliths, where just meeting them is a rare and charished opportunity. Just go to any major tourney and say “hi”. And as said before, if you want to play them, challenge them to a money match.

This isn’t the NFL. This isn’t the NBA. This isn’t the MLB or even the NHL.

This is a fighting game community.

So I was gonna aks you somethin I been aksin all the players, what do you think of the idea of a fighting game league, kinda like the NBA, NFL or NHL

Too hard. I know this is off topic, but here are few things to remember.

The NBA has 30 owners.
The NFL has 32 owners.

Hypothetically speaking if we create a fighting game league like the NBA or NFL we need at least 8 teams.

That means you need 8 owners to buy into the concept. Out of these 8 owners they need to realize a few things.

  • They are going to lose money for the first few years.
  • Like any other sport there will only be one winner at the end of the year, so they have to learn to accept losing.
  • They need to have faith in the FG community can grow.
  • They are going to need to put out money for lawyers to deal with contract situations.
  • They are going to need to put out money for per diem, hotel, flights (if it’s not done online and rather offline).

Now not only that, but we also need a commissioner that works for the owner. (Are you keeping track that’s 9 VIP already plus plenty of smaller people such as marketing, PR etc…).

Now we need to deal on the player side. First we need a player union to protect the players. W/o a player union the owners can give the players next to nothing in salary and benefits. So there is no incentive for the players to play (remember this is 2011, we can’t just copy the old ways of doing things the NBA, and NFL did). We also need legal presentation for the players (we probably don’t’ need agents until the league grows bigger).

There is just too many damn logistic problems now a days. When the NBA, and NFL was first created they didn’t have to deal with all this at once. They slowly grew into them. The market for making money is so trivia compared to the NBA or NFL.

The only way I can see this happening is if they do the league online. Or the move everyone that’s in the league into one central location like what Korea did with Starcraft. There is also no T.V deals to make money like the NBA or NFL unless a miracle happens, and ESPN is drooling over competitive fighting games.

The only model that has worked so far with gaming is the Korean KESPA model, and that just doesn’t seem feasible for a country like the United States.

The MLG model is more like golf, tennis, and other 1v1 sports. So that’s a completely different story.

Well any real pros in real sports in a contest like this just throw the match cause they have a shit ton of money and they are nice guys and like to see the regular joe get the money.

So i hope this guy isn’t trying to make money with this plan and planning on not having to pay out the 1000 to 5000. Cause it’s just common courtesy that they let the guy win the money.

Starcraft 2 is exploding world wide, not just in korea. IGN just created a north american league, and that’s in addition to MLG and the NASL. I think we’re really going to see e sports take off soon, and I’m incredibly excited about it.

Isn’t SC2 1v1 though?

I’m talking about teams like for example the NFL, and NBA.

And if you are legitimately better then you would jump on a chance to turn $5 into $5000, plus whatever fame/bragging rights is associated with being the sole winner of this contest. Why wouldn’t you?

You could always just challenge them to a $4,995 money match later instead if the $5 is really too much for you

The $5 doesn’t guarantee shit, but a chance. If I was legitimately better then they are I would challenge each of them to a $5,000 money match.

The $5 doesn’t mean shit. If the event needed donations to keep the venue I will give them $5 point blank and ask for nothing in return.

It’s the concept that is stupid.

People don’t pay money at a basketball game to take the $50,000 half court shot. They pay for tickets to WATCH the game, and if they are lucky they get CHOSEN by the team to shoot the $50,000 half time half court shot.

Nobody buys NBA tickets thinking they are going to get pick for the $50,000 shot. They pay for the game, and if they are lucky they get the extra perk of the $50,000 shot or a free burger, fries, hat, shirt etc…

If the wager is such a stupid idea and nobody else enters then you’d have pretty good chances of being the one chosen, wouldn’t you?

If nobody enters I’d imagine they just wouldnt run the raffle lol

But yeah, definitely wouldn’t pay for this. Having to beat all 3 pros in a 3/5 seems kinda ridiculous. It’s hard enough to beat 3 people 3/5 that are the same skill level as you. Is there even $5000 in the event that someone wins? I doubt it. Should just be like everyone else and raffle off FIGHT STICKS
