Would you guys rather see a 2.5d KOF XII?

Game still looks amazing to me

I saw the sprites and I must say that I much prefer that style of artwork over 3D graphics. I swear, it’s so sad how everyone is just jumping on a bandwagon of 3D this and 3D that. I just love the old school 2D. Hell, I’m having enough trouble getting used to the art style of SF4, and I would far prefer it if they just kept it to 2D anime style.

I don’t think anyone here says they don’t like 2d gaming, you guys are being kind of ridiculous assuming as much. What I do see is people saying they dislike 3d gaming because it will never match the feel of 2d. I offered a point that showed you were wrong about that, and that in the end we can <3 2d gaming all we want, but that we have to acknowledge it has hit its ceiling. It’s not going to go much farther than what we have it. Even Blazblue in all its amazing glory can only do so much to push the genre. Astral Finishes look amazing, and it’s obvious SNKP spent a lot of time on these sprites, but we also see how it affects them financially.

In other words, yes, we can enjoy 2d gaming for what it is. A beautifully handcrafted masterpiece. I played KOF since 94 in the Arcades when I stood on a chair just to reach the controllers. I loved the style of artistic approach and I was one who thought SF3 was one of the most beautifully drawn fighters in the arcade while many chose to ignore it.

It’s called having an open mind to appreciate all artforms, and to realize at some point it has to transcend for the success of the medium and the genre.

Oh, and Nokato. For someone on this forum for so long, I’m really irritated at your limited and pretty one dimensional perspective on the topic. To also think that this point of view is solely American is pretty ridiculous.

Americans are always the ones complaining the most about 2-D traditional art being dated and not good or if something is japanese they completely shit on it. I’ve tried to be civil and nice to people but after being bombarded with everyone’s bullshit opinions I don’t feel the need to hold back and be “politically correct” about my opinions. I’m sure there are some Americans who like 2-D traditional art but most of them are outnumbered by unappreciative fucks who want their Halo all day everyday.

2-D games still come out in Japan and people love them, 3-D is not the fucking answer to everyone’s problems. It makes most games look overrendered, emotionless and non-engaging. Some companies do decent 3-D but I know damn sure that most of the companies are not American. Konami, Capcom (sans SF4) and a few others manage to do 3-D well, but most times it looks like utter shit (Uncharted)

There’s something about 2-D hand-drawn that I will ALWAYS like over 3-D. All of these Halo addicts don’t know shit about quality art before everyone got on the 3-D bandwagon. And like I said, its the trend to shit on anything American because g4 fucking tells you to, or whatever BS E-journalist tells you that happens to have some “hot” communications major(s) telling what to like.

It shouldn’t even be a topic of 2.5D–people in here just don’t know how to appreciate anything that isn’t 3D initially. AND YES its fucking Americans who are like this.

Other countries still teach, and encourage 2-D animation projects because people can fucking draw and they know whats actually good. America still rides the 3-D pony because its easier.

the principal reason of why i play 2D games, its cuz they are 2D, im aware that they took more time of development, and im also aware that the 3D technology is more viable and that the cellshadings are evolving to a good degree, yet, all of them lack of the passion and the art that a 2D art could bring, just look at Odin Sphere, one of the most beautiful games that i had the chance to play, the way that the games is designed and animated, so full of detail and taste, its simply superb, and im pretty sure that if it were 3D part of that essence would be lost, im not saying that you cant do truly art worthy games in 3D, shadow of the colossus is an example, but in this times and days, where every monkey do 3D generic games, and where a lot of people with less than a half of a brain that stupidly overlook the 2D art only cuz is not 3D, or cuz its to “childish”, im more than willing to show my support to the people who are brave enough to continue a great art tradition

To be fair, I don’t believe it’s a matter of people not appreciating the pixel art style. It’s more an issue of people not caring for upscaled relatively low resolution pixel art when they’ve grown accustomed to HD visuals. Also, the words “hand drawn” have been bandied about in nearly every bit of promotional material for the game. When your average person hears the words “hand drawn”, I don’t think they anticipate seeing pixelated sprites (however beautiful they may be).

Look cunt, no one is saying you HAVE to like SFIV or SFIV’s graphics. That was never the issue. The issue was you making sure that everybody knew how much you hated SFIV’s graphics on every goddamn page. It got old really fucking fast.

Also especially hilarious is your insistence that liking SFIV’s looks and/or hating KoFXII’s looks is somehow an “American” thing, which has always been a fucking joke. As if KoFXII is making serious bank in Japan or it’s going to make serious bank in Europe (moreover, as if Tekken 6 wasn’t shitting all over everything in Japanese arcades - have a ton of Americans suddenly migrated to Japan without anyone noticing?). KoFXII was extremely unlikely to do that well in the US given its gneral lack of presence and history here, but the KoFXIII demo that they released at full price was pretty much asking for trouble.

SNK dug themselves a massive hole making KoFXII the way they did. They did it as a labour of love and the end result looks great (though I was surprised that the sprites aren’t actually hi-res; what’s up with that?), but it was always going to bite them in the ass financially. You’ve always been butthurt because Capcom chose not to make the same major mistake they did with SF3 with SFIV and have been rewarded for it; meanwhile, SNK is treading the same path that Capcom did with SF3, and thus far have been punished for it. But aside from the shitty netcode, which I actually find surprising (and they may yet fix it), their punishment is entirely self-inflicted and, moreover, it was entirely predictable (PREDICTABO!).

SF4 is successful because it was shoved down everyone’s throats. Its proves that a game could be incredibly shitty but if you hype it up enough people will fucking buy it.

And another thing, people praise SF4 unreasonably on these forums like its the greatest thing since sliced bread. The game looks like ass, and doesn’t play very well either. People shit on 3s because oh its the cool thing and everyone else is doing it when that game is 2-D masterpiece and while the gameplay is arguably flawed due to parry, etc people ignore the artistic aspect of the game entirely and for what…SCRUB FIGHTER 4?

KOFXII looks great, but because its not 3-D people are fucking retarded and don’t want to try it. Its also the fact the people act like they have to be fucking spoonfed every fucking goddamn thing that they could ever want so if its not plastered all over a fucking Gamestop window they don’t think it exists.

Because SF4 was put in everyone’s face they think it is the greatest goddamned game in the motherfucking world and it clearly isn’t. KOFXII is a fine game that people will miss out on because it doesn’t look like Kratos will be downloadable.

edit: yeah those dots but mostly just the outlines, the coloring is mostly done by 2 color shading.

Kof XII used the traditional method which means upscaling and make pixles easly visible. KOF XII sprites are 4 times the size of pervious KOF sprites which makes them 340x496. the Neo Geo had a display resolution of 320x224 four times that is 1280x896. Blazblue zooms out so the pixles aren’t visible.

SF3 Ryu sprite is 78x111 upscaled that by 2 and you get 156x222, upscaled it by 3 and you get 234x333.
