Would you guys rather see a 2.5d KOF XII?

I was going to comment within this thread until I read its contents. I stand by Phoenix in saying, yes, please close this thread.

what were you going to contribute, humor me.

I thought SF4 looked great, but amazing quality 2D will always look better than 3D.

Look at Stuart Hayden’s avatar. You could not do that with 3d.

End of thread.

what avatar?

KOF XI was the epitome of KOF games and 2d SNK games. Overall I think they should have gone 3d with the sprites this time given the next gen HW.

The time saved drawing sprites could have been used to make more levels, moves, larger roster, etc. which would make more people happy and deeper gameplay, helping the game potentially sell a lot more copies.

I want to see SNK succeed as much as anyone else but they need to step up their game!

2d forever… kof MUST keep his 2d tradition…sf too but they changed it so…

3D with sprites = deeper gameplay.

I don’t know how you got that… selective reading?

The time saved drawing sprites could have been used to make more levels, moves, larger roster, etc. which would make more people happy and deeper gameplay in turn helping the game sell potentially more copies.

learn to read please.

I agree. I’ve only played sf4 a little(and the gameplay is cool, just that I can’t stand the 2.5/3d look), but I believe that sf4 players, or rather sf players in general have let capcom slide with the game because of it’s history, or love of sf, what have you. I wonder what would’ve happened had capcom went the route that snk did. In any case, they should know that they can’t pull this shit with CvS3.

Recipe for win:

 1. License or duplicate cel-shading tech like that used in the Naruto PS3 game.

 2. Do 3D anime models in the style of your favorite SNK artist.

 3. Have an emulated KOF98UM or 2002UM running invisibly in the background.

 4. If player 1’s sprite is at position 100,100, doing a stand C animation, then draw player 1’s 3d model at 100,100,0 doing a stand C animation.

 5. The duration and appearance of that stand C animation matches the old 2D animation, but 3d means it can animate smoothly at 60fps since it can tween between keyframes.

 6. We now have a KOF game with smooth and hires graphics, all the characters, and the exact gameplay of 98UM or 02UM. WHICH WAS ALL WE EVER WANTED IN THE FIRST PLACE DAMMIT.

(they’d also need to do 3d backgrounds, and new sounds, etc. but you get my point.)

Stuff like yamazakis snake arms might be tricky, theyd probably have to do some 3d technique that makes it look different. But this also means they can do all the benefits of 3d like costumes/hairstyles/clothing objects, fancy camera angles during supers and win poses, etc.

I’d hate to see a 2.5d KOF, 2D animation to me looks alot nicer, more fluid, and in general looks alot more natural. Alot of the animation in SF4 to me looks unnatural and clunky, atleast when we compare it to its predecessor SF3, the animation in SF3 puts SF4 to shame.
Thats not to say SF4 looks bad, I slowly warmed up to the look of that particular game and like it but ultimately 2D animation is just better by miles, all you have to do is compare the flow of clothing in SF3 to the flow of clothing in SF4 and you can see how stiff SF4 looks.

But thats just my opinion.

…but we already have 98um and 2k2um. I don’t want yet another rehash of those 2 games AGAIN.

Why? Whats the point in randomly changing gameplay mechanics and removing characters so everyone hates it? (eg.99, 2003).

The way to a perfect game is to keep refining things (eg. VF) so the gameplay and balance get better and better. Not change just for the sake of change.

And to upgrade the graphics every now and then so people dont have to ignore the gfx to enjoy the gameplay.

gameplay + graphics > gameplay.

To answer the question, nope.

No thx for the rehash yet again, its been 15 years of the same shit over and over again. If KOF series wants to break out of its underground shadow it needed this reboot. Dont like it, go play SF4. Its scrub friendly.

What exactly needed a reboot? What parts of the gameplay needed to be rebooted, and for what reason? To appeal to casuals more? To capitalise on nostalgia?

The only thing that needed a reboot was the graphics. We would have been fine if the gameplay was still the same as a popular previous KOF.

KOF XII is one of the deepest games around. More characters, levels, and moves do not make for a better game, and 2.5D doesn’t do much either except appeal to 3D fan boys. Since when do these things ultimately make for better gameplay? SFII(and all it’s variations) players to this day are still expanding and altering metagame, zoning, and mind games, take a look at Capcom’s HDR for Pete’s sake.

KOFXII is a great game, it plays well, animations are smooth as hell, and best of all it’s not 2.5D.

KOF12 players better than any KOF before it and yes it needed a graphical reboot. Its the best fighter released this year hands down. Those sprites have been around since I was a teenager. If they wanted to attract more/new gamers of this generation since it has been 15 years they needed to do this. The fighting engine was dated as well, you could only do so much with that old tech.

2.5D
stupid idea :coffee:

i preffer my 2D fg’s at 2D

only if the company’s name is CAPCOM
SNK & ASW like to do true 2D games

Do you think KOF12 is deeper than past KOFs though? And everything you said about SF2 is true for 98/ 02 as well - people still play and grow those games. They’re more popular than 12 in the arcades, even!

3D models means you can get smooth animation and high res with minimum of effort. We’ve also seen now that cel-shading tech is getting good enough to make 3D look almost as stylish as hand drawn art. For a game with tons of characters like KOF, and a company with limited resources like SNK, the reduction in labour from 3d would be a big deal.

(then again most of their staff are probably 2d guys, so they couldnt do it anyways.)

And putting aside my comment about rehashing 98UM in 3d, they could do exactly the same technique on 12, and we’d have 12’s gameplay with the full cast and moveset by now.
