Worry over SFIV stealing our player base

I’m trying to cut back on fighting games in general. I may not even get SF4, but even if I do I’ll probably play HDR more. Sirlin did a really good job on the game. I got pissed over Fei Long getting the shaft, but now that I main Blanka it doesn’t bother me as much.

SF turbo will always be around dude i wouldnt worry

Yeah, it’ll stick around, as long as it continues to be supported.

You always have a solid community on GGPO and 2DF. ST is always going to be the most famous Street Fighter. It still gets plenty of coins in Japan. So don’t fret, ST will always be here. Even if ya have to play it on the PC.

Remix mode kind of turns off a lot of people too, at least it does for me. Love ya Sirlin, but you messed with my Chun too much lol.

It could add more potential players. I’ll barely be on it, great game and all, but it’s time for a new SF for me.

If SF4’s netcode sucks, people will come back in droves to STHD. Just watch.

No - you speak the truth…good thing the netcode isn’t on some fail type shit (so far)

If SFIV had fucked up netcode it would stop that game dead in it’s tracks here in the US.

In response to the OP, I can only say one thing…

Worry is concern over something you can’t control.

So…since you can’t control it, it’s not worth concerning yourself about. Play and enjoy your game. Let others do what they’re going to do.

From what I’m hearing (sure there aren’t a lot of people playing it yet) but the netcode is really good. If people stop playing SFIV it’ll be because they suddenly realize it’s not as fun as the other games they used to play. Which is unlikely cuz SFIV at least right now looks mad fun. It’s CVS2 without all the A groove and RC bullcrap.

I was just tired of the older SF games always looking mad old and not up to date. One of the main reasons I’ll be playing SFIV is that it is much more compatible with newer TV’s than older SF games and the game looks fresh and new. Be the first time I can look at a new SF game and go “man…that really looks and plays nice on an HDTV”. No more CFJ and new games using old hardware. SFIV will actually look like a new game period. It’s defintely the SF of the future.

Unless the netcode makes Vega constantly exaggerate even minor network problems again, I doubt I’ll be back a lot. I can’t play randoms with him, or I end up with a 13/27 win/loss ratio where I only remember losing 3 times. Unless I know the other guy’s forwarded his ports correctly, it’s just not worth it.

Also, having played SF4 already, I can’t see me wanting to play SF2 as much. SF4 seems to have everything that made SF2 great still intact, whilst borrowing much of what made SF3 great. And until SF4 adds air blocking making approaching far too safe, I can’t see why people think SF4 is like Alpha.

You guys not expecting SF4 to eviscerate the HDR player base are crazy. If Remix had been out longer before people starting getting hyped for and playing console SF4, and if it hadn’t been the buggiest major fighting game release of all time, ie if it had been able to build up a stronger player base, maybe it would have more staying power, but that’s not what happened. Even speaking as a longtime ST player and SF2 fan, I have to say that I think SF4 is at least almost as good as and potentially even better than ST, and combine that with its newness, graphics, hype, and reportedly good netcode, well, I don’t think Remix is gonna stand much of a chance.

If the update to Remix actually fixes most of the glitches and netplay and stuff, then I’ll probably go back and play Remix every once in a while, and I’ll practice up on it before Evo. I don’t expect that many casual players will do the same.

Once the hype dies down and enough time passes for people to be objective about the game they paid $60 for, I think SF4 will be considered an average SF game. This might take years, but it’ll happen. The game feels like a watered down version of ST with some superfluous stuff from from Alpha, SF3 and EX thrown in. It lacks the purity and simplicity that made SF2 classic.

HD Remix will be around for a while. A lot of people bought it and it’s pretty cheap so it will continue to sell. ST’s like a cockroach. It’ll be around when we’re all dead.

HD remix won’t die. It’s just a great game.

SFIV actually led me to buy HDR. I got gradually more and more excited for SFIV as I learned more about it, but was stressed because I really don’t have the money to drop on a new game and the stick I would want to play it with. After a couple weeks, I decided to just buy HDR for now (it’s my first street fighter game) and wait and see whether I still want SFIV and a stick later on. If it weren’t for the SFIV hype, though, I’m sure I wouldn’t be playing HDR.

I don’t think you have much to worry about. I played SFIV for the first time tonight, and my initial impression is it sucks. The matchmaking is not as good as HDR, and the gameplay doesn’t feel tight like a real Street Fighter game. IV has pretty graphics and slick presentation, but the matchmaking is terrible and the gameplay is about the same.

SF4 will probably be flooded with scrubs at launch, and all the HDR scrubs will probably move on.

I expect that the good players who have been playing SF games for a while will still give HDR a spin pretty often, while the scrubs will never look back. If anything I expect that the level of competition in HDR will go up after SF4 comes out, because it’s be mostly long-time ST players who are still playing HDR and not random scrubs who just want to play the newest SF game.

I’m not very happy with the graphics to be honest. When I compare SF4’s characters to Team Fortress 2’s characters, it’s a night and day difference. SF4 has no sense of style and there are nasty little animation flaws that are just noticeable enough to make the game look cheesy. Watch Dhalsim’s face as he finishes a fireball for an example of this. There’s no transition from one animation (bug-eyed) to the other (normal).

TF2’s characters don’t suffer from this. They animate smoothly between actions and have an amazing amount of personality. On the surface, it probably seems like a weird comparison, but a 3D model is a 3D model regardless of what type of game it’s placed in.

Then there are the backgrounds. They’re lifeless and boring.

Character models vary from decent, to truly awful to somewhere in between. The new characters look like leftovers from an SNK fighter.

As far as gameplay goes, it’s less of a throwback to SF2 and more of a confusing mixture of ST, Alpha and SF:EX. If they’re not going to give the sequel to SF2 its own identity like they did with SF3 (for better or worse), they could at least make it play like SF2.

I’m sure the game will sell very well and become a popular tournament game if for no other reason than the lack of competition. It’s easy to impress when you’re the only game in town. If it rejuvenates interest in fighting games, then maybe another developer will come along and blow everyone away in a few years. Until then, I’ll stick with SF2.

The more I play SF4 the more I want to play ST/Remix. I’m trying really hard to like that game but its not flying for me so far. Reminds me to much of SF-EX.

QFT… For real…
