Why people should support Skullgirls (even if they don't quite like it..)

This game is GODLIKE.

MEN MEN MEN MEN MANLY MEN MEN MEN.

Do people actually prefer unblockables, infinites, one touch death, comeback mechanics and pay to win gems? I hope not.

i prefer a real mans man.

The line is between promoting and talking about games you like, and inserting them into every single conversation.

It’s like the person who just found Jesus.

Imagine how big it will be when we find Waldo, or Carmen Sandiego!

One of my gripes is that… a lot of those things aren’t even really “problems” per se. One-touch-kills haven’t been that problematic in MvC3 so far… I mean, you’re killing off one-third of the opponent’s team. Ok, fine: and throws do like, practically a third of your opponent’s entire lifebar in ST, ha. Seriously, high damage isn’t a bad thing (and you’d see that if more tournaments went with 3/5 sets)! It’s just something that Skullgirls wants to shy away from in favor of more reset-heavy gameplay.

Unblockables are also not really a problem. They’re just, “a situation you can’t do anything about.” Which also happens when you’re being comboed, thrown, or being hit by a cinematic super. There are also situations in ST where you are just straight up fucked, without any recourse whatsoever, but the match hasn’t technically ended yet. That’s probably why I remember Ultradavid being like “yeah ok whatever” when he was told about the unblockable prevention system. It’s an improvement in that it makes the game “feel less cheap,” but at high level play it’s sort of value neutral (secretly it’s more impressive as a solution for the problems that could have been caused by custom assists, which could have saturated the game with unblockable setups)!

Comeback mechanics are also not an actual “problem that Skullgirls is solving.” They’re a “thing that people don’t like, and so Skullgirls doesn’t have them.” (Actually it does have them because meter builds at a faster rate for the defender being comboed than the person doing the combo-- but people don’t really talk about that.) ST gives a subtle damage boost to the loser. Blazblue gives you an entire burst for losing. Plenty of games have comeback mechanics and they work perfectly perfectly fine. Ultras are a mediocre implementation of that concept, and X-factor is a controversial one (again-- would be less controversial if people just played longer sets), but that doesn’t mean Skullgirls is doing anything particularly impressive, or even good, by having “no comeback mechanics.” It’s just doing “something.”

Pay to win gems are pretty much complete garbage though, I’ll give you that.

The point is, it’s a bit odd when people take these design decisions that Mike Z has made and then try and pass them off as obvious, unquestionable “improvements” that one would have to be mad not to acknowledge. If you’re going to talk about obvious, unquestionable improvements, you do have plenty to talk about: GGPO, good button config, robust character design, tutorials, etc… But this mentality of “wow, you like death combos, unblockables and comeback mechanics? Haha, wow, enjoy being a sheep” is a little irritating, considering that there’s nothing necessarily wrong with any of those things.

Anyway, I’m a little irritated that so many people are intent on pushing the game rather than playing it, but I’m not too worried about it. Ultimately it’s going to be the serious players who show everyone the value this game has to the genre and to the community, and this game is going to have serious players.

I wonder how many people dissing this game would play it if enough top players played it semi seriously or even competitively even at a local battles level

They don’t really talk about it because it’s not entirely correct.

It’s not “rewarding you for getting beat up” because in the end, the aggressor will still have built up more meter than the defender in the utmost cases. It’s more like a way to allow really really fucking long combos without them being wayyy too strong because they not only deal half a lifebar of damage but also fill your meter to 5 bars.

Nerd Josh and Honzo Gonzo have said they’re really hype and going in on day one of the release. Plenty of other top players have at least shown interest. Plus since this is animu game (at least enough any way) expect top players from Blazblue and Melty Blood to get in this also. Top players you may not always hear about if you’re watching SF and Marvel all the time. I expect some of them to be the big boys in this game also.

I requesting examples of SG GD being bad RIGHT NOW. Seeing people dissing my forum isn’t sensation I’m going to just deal with. I registered on SRK just because of SG. SG forums is a first place I ever posted in English (like I said I’m Russian). And since september of '11 this forum was bringing me nothing but joy and support. I’d like not to taking badmouthing shit from people who had never spend enough time to say “Hello” properly >_>

Great post. I agree with pretty much all of it. I never called anyone a sheep.:frowning: I enjoy playing the games with all those features too. I’m just excited for/prefer a game that will be unique for not having them.

That’s kind of how I expect things to even out when the dust settles, it’ll pretty much unify and strengthen the anime crowd under the one title, and have a pretty solid niche there.

It’ll probably be like MK was, as far as the ‘big names’ goes, they’ll give it a try, play it a little while, then go back to their bread and butter.

And before anyone objects, it doesn’t have anything to do with the quality of the game, that’s just how these things go. It happened with BB, with MK, with KOF, with Soulcalibur, I suspect its starting to happen with SFxT, its just the nature of the beast.

Edit:

You realize you’re asking people to go dredge up old internet fights right? That might be a little… divisive (and I know divisive!)

It’s catching the same flack GG and 3S still get (characters are too weird, where are the normies) so I’m not really sweating it because I love those 2 games.

yeah, 3S chars were weird to whoever back then, but the art still looked good.

SG art looks like ass.

It’s just like your own opinion man.

I’m just not okay with people passing their own arguable points as solid facts >_>
At least in the last couple of months GD was welcoming all new people with open hands.

It’s not about being unwelcoming, it’s about the discussion resembling something you’d see on a My Little Pony subreddit.

O_o Okaaaaaay then… I think conversation about cartoons for kids is honestly worst thing that can probably happens with grown man >_>
Yeah, we are the worst then. Hands down.

I’d prefer that than the pre-release SFxT blowing up into an argument about Poison’s gender whenever someone mentioned they’d hit that.
