I have a really good local zero and I’ve been performing consistently well in the zero/strange matchup.
You can counter super against most lightning/buster/lightning bs and it will autocorrect on crossup. SoV will blow up super aggressive zeros especially if they get too assist-happy. Normal stuff like j.M and Mystic Sword L work really well as anti airs and both lead into full combo. Zero can’t do much with full-screen zoning against strange and I’ve been using Cart+teleport for my mixups and zero doesn’t seem to have a great answer to that, either. Mystic Sword H works well against full screen lightshow nonsense and Zero doesn’t have a great toolset to stop you from super jumping and using grace/FOF self-mixups.
There was that 30 minute match vid between Link and TooMuchDamage that got posted, recently. I def. don’t feel like the Zero/Strange matchups from that is 7-3 or anything like that though I didn’t take notes or anything. If you’re willing to pop XF against him I think strange should win that matchup 8-2 or 7-3 since the only thing that strange doesn’t seem to have a great answer to is assist-backed left/right mixups + buster.
Zero by himself with no neutral assists is one thing (TooMuchDamage was running Disruptor, but Wesker assist is not the best for Zero), but it’s another thing entirely if he’s running Vajra, Hidden Missiles, or his best friend, Jam Session. Keep that in mind. He gets to new levels of stupid with those assists which are VERY common and that’s why I think it’s quite lopsided in Zero’s favor. They’re not exactly exclusive to Zero teams, either. Using Vishanti XF combo against someone does not warrant an automatic 8-2 or 7-3 matchup against anyone. It’s a gimmick that assumes you have meter stocked and the opponent is reckless with his buttons and assist calls. By that logic, Strange should be top tier but clearly he’s lacking in most of his other tools. Yes, it’s good when needed, but it doesn’t automatically bump Strange up to god tier. Besides that though, there’s currently no way to convert off super jump height so that doesn’t always equal a dead Zero if you catch him pressing buttons in the air.
Genmu Zero is something people seem to be forgetting when fighting zoning battles with other characters. Once Zero gets that hard knockdown and blows Strange’s projectiles up, momentum shifts in his favor and there’s not much Strange can do at melee range against Zero’s amazing normals other than block and pray he pressed a button for SoV. You need Haggar or Tatsu to keep him off you then.
To be honest, the only way Strange can fight Zero and hope to win is with The Vishanti x Okami shuffle THC on stock. And Plasma beam is even a better assist for Zero imo, He just get absolutely stupid neverending pressure with that beam.
The Zero I was talking about plays Zero/Vergil/Strider and Zero/Dante/Strider. IMO, him being backed by derp assists is a good thing since he’s going to be calling those kinds of assists to go on the offensive most of the time which means you have a better chance of catching him with an SoV HBD.
The thing that makes him strongest against Zero is that he’s one of the characters in the game that actually warrants burning a meter and xf and Strange is one of the best in the game at doing that.
Like I said in my post, I use Cart to make zero have trouble getting into range and he really can’t go head to head against Strange outside of that range. If you aren’t able to keep zero out then it swings the match-up in a big way.
I’m not terribly worried about Genmu Zero, honestly. You only really have to worry about him X-factoring into it since it doesn’t really do enough to kill or allow for any followups from full screen. From mid to full screen if you react to the x-factor you can sneak a counter.
I’m not saying Zero is free to him (the 8-2 is def. an exaggeration) but the character is made to push buttons and Strange is made to punish people for pressing buttons. I still think Strange has one of the more favorable matchups against zero in this game.
Well the other day i played online a very good Zero / Vergil / Dante player with my Thor / Strange / Ammy team, and it was pretty even thanks to my Thor as battery strategy. Thor can fight Zero with his tools plus bolts of balthakk + cold star, and the moment Thor dies and Strange have to get in, he just kill characters with the THC, XFC, teleport, teleport, teleport, etc mixup plus the mixups for the incoming characters. Think of it like a pseudo Phoenix strategy with both Strange + Amaterasu. I think that’s the best way Strange can fight the top tiers. cloud805er was the player and he runs a top notch Zero team with all the tools and hitconfirms crazyness with the Sparda twins. Result of the casuals was 11-10
@Merkyl, i dont think so, Strange alone, or Strange + X assist will never be on the level of Zero + the Sparda twins, the only way Strange can fight that thing is by having a THC that calls in a fullscreen hyper + Vishanti, for example:
The Zero player wont ever press a button again at fullscreen distance if he knows Strange has such a thing in his trigger coming out in 10 frames, giving you time to prepare some mixups. Also, TOD for characters at super jump heigh are inconsistent.
if you manage to get the time to place the first EoA, it MAYBE (and a huge maybe cause Zero May Cry is the king of BS in this game) can be done against ZDV, cause neither of the twins has an invincible assist. Zero’s teleport is also not invincible. If you place the EoA and cancel it in a mystic sword M or H not even the fully-charged buster will make the EoA disappear.
But still, the chance that you get the time to start it is barely null.
I was thinking of using Jill/Strange/Doom, but seeing a lot of these comments by Doc Strange veterans, kind of makes me think it’s not worth it to add him to a Jill team. I kind of wanted a alternate that could do what Hulk cant on my first team, like not dealing with keep away characters well like hawkeye. Oh Well…
Strange is a bad matchup for Zero I’ve played this numerous times against numerous competent Stranges Its hard for the robot to fight him. I’m sure most of the Zero’s will ignore this though since alot of the newer Zero’s are tier whores and Tier whore pick characters for emotional support “My character is so geeewd gaiz he must not haz bad matchupz” And Stranges will ignore it because their character is considered low tier “I looooze to every character its so hard” Most people arent gonna take the matchups for what they are or play the game for themselves they just wanna let the tiers talk.
Jill/Strange is pretty good actually, don’t let the discussions here fool you. Having Strange second is like having a deadlier Vajra assist at the cost of more meter. It actually helps Jill fight characters like Trish who would prefer to stay up in the air where she can’t them. Arrow Kick assist also helps Strange break the 1m bar, and Strange’s Bolts is godly for neutral and mixups because it forces the opponent to crouch under them.
I kind of liked daggers of denak as a assist for Jill, cause she can tick that assist into throws and combo off of air and ground throws, and there homing.
It just seemed like even you were taking a break from mvc3, and also because of Strange’s problems (as a character). How well would Jill/Strange do against
Zero anyway, I also plan on using doom missiles on that team.
I’m trying out Iron Fist/Strange, seem to do well with both backed by Ammy for Lockdown/Mixup games. Bolt/Cold Star help Iron Fist get in and extend combos if needed. Rising Fang helps nullify projectiles while hitting airborne opponents.
I assume you have another assist to help Jill get in as Daggers aren’t as good as Bolts outside of extending combos.
I don’t really know your playing style so whatever fits your playing style and gets you wins use it. I’m just recommending something to help eliminate any trouble teams that like to zone do.
