Why is the music so bad in new Capcom games?

MODOK theme will be remembered!!!

The music I heard from MvC3 is terrible but most of SSFIV’s music isn’t bad. You can hear the difference in production between Vanilla and Super though. Super has more of a “stadium” techno/drum n bass influence (think “Pendulum”), which is admittedly not necessarily a good thing.

The thing is the older titles had soundtracks that had limited hardware (like mirc said), so the producers ensured that they were very melodic (and therefore memorable). Newer titles (in all games of any genre) don’t have those limitations so in many cases melody takes a back seat and more effort goes into the sound production and arrangement, which in most cases is actually quite good. There are maybe only a couple of tracks in SFIV that I can hum or whistle along to (Snowy Railroad), but there are others that I enjoy as well for various reasons.

Soundtracks are the least of newer games’ problems.

Like any art, good composers cost money … and these days, while a game with a great soundtrack might get bonus points nobody is going to mention a poor soundtrack (especially in a FG) except in passing.

IIRC many of SF2’s classic tunes you all know were composed by Yoko Shimomura when she was in her prime. In my opinion the was her last amazing soundtrack and after that she started making really forgettable/manufactured/soulless music.

There’s no such thing as an artist prime. History shows that artist never go over the hill. Numerous artist have shown to create consistent quality throughout their lifetime.

You can’t judge MvC3’s music as standalone things, they rely heavy on how they are used in the game. The songs need to switch on the fly, and thus are all very sameish, in key, chord progression, sound, and tempo. Because of how they work in game, you aren’t going to have standalone songs here.

Secondly do understand that subjectives are subjectives. There are numerous SFIV songs I do appreciate, such as C. Viper’s theme. There’s no such thing as bad, unless you are The Shaggs.

The best.

@Anemone: Octopus Pie has proven that The Shaggs are the best band ever. Or the worst. Basically the worst.

But yeah - since MvC3 uses the CGoH music switching system, the OST is much more demanding than with most games. I actually quite like a lot of it: X-23’s theme, Doom’s theme, MODOK’s theme. Only one I strongly dislike is Trish’s.

There are always exceptions but for the most part they do go over the hill.

No they don’t. I’m not even talking about exceptions but a consistent trend within the history of the artistic field. The only such cases that fit the “over the hill” department are those artist who have one or two significant contribution and that ONLY. The vast majority of notable artist in any field has produced quality works until their death, retirement, or something else inhibits them from their work. I could list countless people from Puccini to Herbie Handcock. The entire idea of an artist being “over the hill” is nothing less than a recent pheonmia that has no real backing when looking at the history of the arts, and is only a byproduct of the unrealistic standards placed on modern day artist. Ike Turner was considered “over the hill” when he was in all honesty simply fallen out of favor due to his drug addiction and relationship with Tiny Turner, however as he proved with his work with Blur frontman Damon Albarn, as well as his unfinished return with hip-hop producer and half of Gnarles Barkely Dangermouse, the man still had plenty left to give to the world

Creativity is no inhibited by age except in the cases of mental illness due to age.

Why do people favor 3S music so much is what I want to know. The music in the previous two iterations were so much better. Example is Dudley’s theme.

Who was talking about age?
Some people just lose their artistic vision and can’t make new stuff with the same quality of their best entries.

I believe this is heavily based on the fact that most people never even heard of the previous two installments let alone played them. This is probably the same reason why most people associate ‘Jazzy Nyc’ with Ken when it was originally Alex’s theme.

Most people who have played 2I agree it’s better than 3S OST wise.

This times 100!!!

3s’s music is pretty bad compared to the first 2 games.

That being said…I’ve disliked the musical direction of Capcom fighters since 3s came out. SF4’s music is the epitome of garbage to me with the exception of those few guitar tracks: Adon, Cammy, Able, etc…

Cruise Ship Stern, Snowy Railyard and Solar Eclipse were decent attempts. Historic Distillery, the India stage, and the Bay themes however, were utter garbage. I reallly don’t know what direction they were going with those.

I take it you’ve never played any version of Guilty Gear…

what is a Guilty Gear???
