It’s more likely that Radiant was acquired because Riot wanted to have the minds behind the best netcode out there helping them with their efforts to improve the quality of netplay. They’ve invested quite a bit into getting <80ms of latency for as many players as possible, and have expressed interest in selling this technology to other developers.
A League of Legends fighting game is unlikely as Riot has shown that they are only interested in nurturing their one esports baby. League of Legends has alternate game modes that are extremely neglected (or shut down) by Riot in favor of focusing entirely on 5v5 esports.
And honestly, they would probably make more money focusing on their game than trying to move in on the FGC. Evo 2015 had a peak viewership of ~250k, Worlds 2015 had a peak viewership of 14 million and averaged 4mil throughout the entire tournament.
You bring up a good point But here’s ANOTHER good point to go with that one:
Who’s to say it has to be 1v1?
I’ve been waiting for fighting games to become more than just fighting games. Powerstone tried out the free for all aspect, smash has team play.
What about a fighting game where you have criticals and AOE damage and even slows on attacks? There’s little to no reason why these things can’t be done already and in fact, with things like the already been functional pvp servers for games like WOW, there is basically no reason why wow style pvp can’t be crossed up with streetfighter and Powerstone to be some kind of amazing team based fighting game.
If it’s done well, it could honestly outdo dota and LOL.
And even if all that ridiculous speculation is completely way off base. A new fighting game franchise backed by a AAAAA developer can’t be a bad thing. If it’s shit, it will be shit like a million other fighting games. But if it’s good… Oh boy. The skies the limit and the people that pick it up, may find themselves having good execution and wanting bigger challenges from other fighting games.
The great thing about this genre is that its one on one no bullshit. This single fact that is so great that Smash players do their damnest to emulate it. You want to take the great thing about this as a competitive game and shit all over it. If you want something with fighting game basics and team work, play Awesomenauts. A multiplayer fighting game thingy would just be ass.
We have team games already though. Where that marvel 2 at?
League of Legends is a terrible, shitty game, the game produces toxic environment for players new and old, casuals and pros.
If I want to die of a early Heart Attack I would Play League of Legends. The game is even abbreviated as LOL also used for Laugh out Loud which is ironic.
At least when you get to a FGC tournament (or the ones I have been to, and what friends told me) the atmosphere and the people are friendly, people are willing to take the time to offer pointers.
MOBAs are even more toxic to people’s mental health than living with an alcoholic step-father in the deep south (and you are a Red head).
Also isn’t League of Legends considered an “Anime Fighter” and those never do well.
Yes what we all need another Poverty Fighter who bring shit loads of toxic, filthy (mouthed) casuals and so-called “Pros” who think their shit don’t stink.
I’m into a lot of games. Shooters, mobas, rpgs, etc etc.
I don’t think a game becomes not a fighter by doing different things. Yeah, some games are 1v1 and will stay that way, which is great. I like 1v1 because it means no team to hold me back or blame my excuses on. But I also like teams because they are more social as a whole and I’m not always left to do all the heavy lifting.
This is kinda like the ol is GG better or streetfighter… Both have their proponents and both cater to different playstyles and attitudes. But at the of the day there is room for both.
One doesn’t negate the existence of the other. No one is trying to do away 1v1 games by making team games and no one is trying to do away with team games by making 1v1 games.
And genre intersplicing is just something that happens and will continue to happen, sometimes with great results, sometimes with bad.
I do like awesomenauts though. But there is room for more than one game of that type, as well as a game of that type that takes more of the 1v1 fighter aspect and less of the moba aspect.
Yeah, but I don’t think we’re going to go into the whole LOL route where Riot literally controls the behavior of its players and even prevents some of them from competing.
I wouldn’t mind a LoL-flavoured Rising Thunder redux (Dr. Mundo kicks ass). If it had tag-team that’d be neat too. But I don’t see it working super well, if only because brand recognition alone won’t sell a change of genre. I love seeing new blood as much as the next guy, but is the established LoL playerbase the kind of audience that responds well to the harsh reality of “git gud”? LoL players’ll stick to LoL, FG players will stay away.
If Riot really is going for a fighting game and not the netcode, I wonder if it’ll be a new cast in the LoL setting–or a new IP wholesale–to downplay that potential disadvantage.
A new franchise is always good news, but I’m not eager to see the LoL community here (In my country, a girl got up to the pro leage and about week and half later quitted because of all the hatred she recived online). I don’t want that on EVO or CEO or even the small tournament we had on the last con on my city (we were 16)
Here we have scrubs, sore losers and trashtalker winners. Not just a heel, like FChamp, but people like Netotigr (love the videos where people troll him, but not as much as when Sonic Fox destroys his sorry ass), but never that amount of them.
Well, sorry, this post just sounds xenophobic to me. I can be that way as well. But I won’t use my xenophobia alone as a reason for not wanting others to partake in things.
And I don’t really care for white knighting at all. If chicks want to deal with the fgc… They gonna have to deal with it as it is. There are chicks all over the place that hide the fact that they are chicks. Big deal.
Online I for damn sure ain’t telling these 13 year olds that I’m 38 or that I’m black. I don’t wanna hear all the niggers and dinosaur jokes all day. But I don’t mind that people are that way… It’s what makes people people.
This safe space shit has no place in the fgc. In my top 32 losers bracket match at evo 2k13 I had a dude screamin in my ear how wack I was, how I was gonna drop all my combos, how my painwheel was shit and how did I ever make top 32 etc etc etc.
I didn’t complain, I just sucked it up went home and tried to git gud. If chicks can’t handle shit and /or defend themselves then they don’t deserve to participate.
At my local there is a ridiculously good Laura player, that happens to be a pretty damned hot chick. It would be cool if she sticks with it, but if she doesn’t because she gets looked at to much by ugly nerds or pisses people off when she wins… Well that’s her problem. I’ve beaten plenty of top players and made them salty as fuck. Keep on truckin

There’s limits that just can’t be crossed. I don’t want to be on a community that would chase Ricky Ortiz in her private life just for bullying purposes because she earned the right to play several Street Fighter top8.
If someone comes to play against me online, challenges me to a 1st to 5, or something, we chat, it’s an ok person, and we can play, for fun or for competition, I won’t ask if he plays LoL, Chess or if he’s a fucking Master Dorito Mountain Calladooty.
it would be a great stepping stone for people to get into fighting games
then transfer over to other fighting games
anything to help build the fgc is great
usually getting familiar with one fighting game gets you to try other fighting games
thats a good thing
i hope this takes off
i think the fgc is slowly dying
it’s kind of hard seeing you guys talk about refusing to let people in
you’re always going to have “toxic” players, its part of gaming now
you guys give examples of players being bashed on but that’s just how the internet is
majority of the fgc supports the players and guide them
we should promote the growth of the fgc and as members of the fgc we should guide the new players and manage the "toxicity"
i just dont want the fgc to die out
Even if we do get an official league of fighters, how much of its playerbase will cross pollinate to other fighting games?
The closest situation I can think of is what we have is smash. Yeah we share venue spaces nowadays. But how many players have you met that said they originally came from smash? Or people who played traditional fighting games to take the plunge to competitive smash? You might hear about a notable player from either game wetting their feet in the other, but I’ve never seen the transfers in any of the local scenes that I’ve been in.
From the sounds of it Riot might not even want to have their games hosted by TOs, with the exception of maybe Evo with heavy restrictions like what Nintendo tried to do.
but if there’s a chance that they do transfer over then why not?
if they do then it’s good
if they don’t then nothing changes
we don’t lose anything and there’s a chance the fgc grows
