Dan is the Deadpool of Street Fighter. First Appearance for Deadpool (New Mutants #98 February, 1991) came before Dan’s first appearance in SF Alpha back in 95…

Deadpool is crazy, but he’s no fool… comic relief of course. But you can count on him to get this mission done.

Depends on the writer.
It could be because he’s been through so much tragedy in his life, he went insane to cope.
It could be because he knows he’s a comic book character, and knows nothing he does is of much consequence.
Could be frustration and stress from saving the world multiple times yet still struggling to pay bills.
It could be because he has cancer that’s metastasized to every part of his body, including his brain, and a healing factor that replaces the brain cells as fast as they die.
Or he might have been crazy from the start.
You should read his comics =P.

Occasionally in the comics they get into his childhood and relationship with his father, but whether or not any of that is accurate or just his crazy fabrication of events is another story.
His origin of insanity seems Joker-esque if you get down to it. Hell, he’s like Deathstroke and Joker but without the…joke/prankster gimmick mostly.
There are a good number of possible past-related incidents it could be…but then again, you cannot really trust the mentally ill guy telling you a few of them.
Wasn’t there some kinda identity crisis with him and T-Ray as well?
His mind was FUBAR’d after Weapon X gave him Wolverine’s healing factor. Making him horribly and irreversibly scarred beyond repair from head to toe in addition to his insanity and 4th wall awareness and hijinks.
Early issues of the '97 Joe Kelly run also indicate that learning he had cancer fucked his brain up a bit, and he goes on a killing spree on some assignment. Factor in a healthy dose of self-hatred, Weapon X experiments, being a walking, undying, tumor, and uhh…yeah. His mind just snaps. I think he officially “snaps” when some guy (Worm?) gets murdered because of him in the Weapon X reject facility.
