what “marketing” has capcom done?
SNK’s rise to glory AND it’s downfall was the Neogeo. Since their going bankrupt and subsequent return from the grave, they’ve apparently learned a little bit of common sense.
An interesting thing to point out is that the cheaper, weaker hardware DID make SNK incredibly more inexpensive, which led to SNK games being very, very popular outside of NA in a variety of places (insert witty third world country, third world hardware joke here) because of their availability. Couple that with a few outstanding titles having been released for the system and you’ll probably understand why SNK was so stubborn about keeping the hardware for so long (even though they didn’t realize it was professional suicide).
I was one of the people who never understood why SNK didn’t jump ship to the NAOMI when it came out.
I’m surprised someone else thinks this too. Crystalis was the shit.
DragonSama is right.
They need to diversify their game if they want to stay alive this time.
And they need to do SOMETHING in North America if they want to stay in the game.
They NEED Metal Slug and Card Fighter’s Clash for the DS to come out NOW.
They NEED a console army/FPS game (Ikari Warriors for the new generation?)
They NEED to reach the RPG/anime following by making another Crystalis or another RPG based on KOF/SS
They NEED to market the Maximum Impact series based on anime sex appeal (worked for DoA)
They NEED to market NeoGeo Battle Coliseum for North America and get reviewers and critics behind it

Well said; many of you have also had good points, but Dragon really put an interesting perspective on it.
I guess the more appropriate question would now be: Is SNK going to be more successful with fighting games in the future?
But I digress, many of you have been argueing that Capcom makes better games, where as the OTHER perspective about Capcom is that they haven’t made an original game in YEARS! Yes, SNK has been making alot of sequels and spin-offs, but if this is your main arguement against SNK, then it should also be an arguement against Capcom.
Granted, Capcom has released some original games recently (killer7) and will release another one this year, Okami. But let’s be honest, look at Capcom’s last releases:

90% of those games are either sequels, collections, serialized, or just plain bad.
Now I love Capcom and I love SNK, and I agree that they both need to take steps to making better games, but they are both guilty of the same faults.
Things are going to change within the next six months depedning on what SNK decides to do, and what Capcom decides to do aswell.
Remember, Capcom was just nailed for tax fraud, so we have to wait and see what happens.
NECESSARY EDIT: I would like to point out that I am not supporting one franchise over another; while I prefer SNK over Capcom, I still believe that they are both equally excellent developers. I’m just trying to get a perspective from a forum that is mainly based around Capcom games.
You know, I’ll take that as granted. But in the intrest of fairness, let’s see a similar list for SNK and see exactly how they stack up.

Capcom makes better games than SNK.
Topic Over.
People attribute capcom to street fighter, this isn’t their strength.
The capcom brand had several block busters back in the early NES days that established them as a tier 1 games maker, right smack alongside konami and square.
Any game that these companies make, turns to gold and people will buy the shit out of on brand name alone.
SNK on the other had what in America to build a brand base off then? Nothing, jackshit, nobody had heard about them, or cared.
So when Fatal Fury and Street Fighter hit the arcades people went with capcom as always because they trusted the brand.
This trend continues even now. Capcom cranks out resident evil and other games increasing their library and fan base.
SNK makes, err KOF and metal slug, that’s not an effective way to get your brand out there and well known.
Two words: Resident Evil.
Capcom has other games and thus, doesn’t have to crutch its sales on a dying genre monetary wise.
Quality over quantity.
Although SNK was always second to Capcom in the US, they were still a major force during the fighting game boom. The media gave plenty of hype to SNK games like Samurai Showdown 2 or KOF94. Arcades had plenty of SNK games. And I still remember when owning a Neo Geo was like a symbol of power for the hardcore gamers.
I don’t think SNK underperformed at all. They didn’t beat Capcom but big deal they did well. They look bad now, but they used to have a strong presence in the US.
I loved the SNK baseball stars game on the NES.
But honestly, the major reason why I got into street fighter was because I heard that it was a fighting game being made by the same people that made Final Fight, which I loved. From there, they just exploded.
cuz prior to garou and their bankruptcy, SNK characters are a fobby ass bunch compared to capcom characters. that shit doesnt appeal to americans, only to fobs and otakus.
and also what kyoji said.
MEGA MAN
STREET FIGHTER II
RESIDENT EVIL
Those are the 3 main reasons, also SFII hit arcades first, with Fatal Fury coming a few mos. after.
SFII had 8 people to pick, FF had like what - 3? and Art of Fighting had what? - 2?
Plus cause of the US’s mindset - FF and AoF were seen as RIPOFFS cause they came out later.
Honestly SNK didn’t really get a shot over here till Samurai Showdown came out but by that time MK was out so that kept them down as well.
I agree with what Mycah said here…
All I’m gonna say is go to Guardcrush.net/forums for all your SNK needs…

So SNKP in the same time period has released 100% “sequels, collections, serialized, or just plain bad” games.
Ladies and gentlemen, you have my point.
So your saying CFJ: Recycle Mega Edition is a great game? LOL!!!
