Why Gouken?

Let’s just say, Gouken is a nice treat from Capcom as he’s the master of Ryu and Ken.

I did not get disappointed at all. All characters have their PROs and CONs but he suits my style.

I think if you master his normals you can go a long way!

I like that his base style is Shoto, but has variations on everything. The main things that keep me using him are the backthrow and Kongo. Whenever I can’t find an answer for something, it’s usually Kongo. I’ve had matches where opponents abandoned any type of jump-in due to getting hit with Kongo 2-3 times. It really allows you to dictate how they play.

I also like that you don’t need to do flashy, high hit count combos do get some good damage. You can play a poking game and take chunks away or pressure into a backthrow or even turtle if you feel the need. He’s very flexible and isn’t limited (at least in my exp) to money mix-ups and setups that he needs to be effective.

I only play characters with beards, and Zangief wears a diaper.

Gen is my second.

I main Gouken because he’s one of those characters that takes a lot of prediction to win with. A victory with Gouken is a victory earned. The Kongoshin is my favorite move in the entire game, nothing like fighting a poke/crossup happy opponent and being able to just say “ENOUGH!” and get instant breathing room. Also, have you seen his match up thread? The level of detail from iamthatiam is astounding; he’s got info on every character, even ones you might think are free (Dan, Makoto).

Gouken is by far one of the most frustrating characters you could be opposite of. He has excellent zoning capabilities, all the mix-ups in the world to get in and not slow enough to make keeping your distance all too difficult. I’ve also realized that his footsies are like Chinese algebra to most people, I can’t count on my fingers and toes how many people fall for c.LP spam, purposefully whiffed c.MK and snatch 'em up with c.FK. If you have the patience and a good sense of deductive reasoning, Gouken will take you far.

After seeing a vid of his trials in vanilla, i was sold.

I just love how when I use gouken you can really make the opponent feel like a guy trapped in some room with the walls edging forward and closing in on them, and then CORNER RAPE

Mater of Ryu/Ken, hes different fun, and his Triple FB did it for me when i first unlocked him and threw a mp/hp FB i almost came.

  • EX Palm into HP Palm
  • EX Tatsu is awesome
  • Doesn’t require alot of execution
  • High damage output
  • Diagonal fireballs

i chose gouken from unlock because of his story and character in the series, and also his character design.

Old man+muscles+non shallant badassery lol
Also, low execution and high damage is perfect for me as I lack dexterity lol

Is there a way to Kara-G Flip??

Wouldn’t think so as we kara with hk. Technically you still could with any other button…just wouldnt see much forward movement.

When I first started with kara slide Its strongest use was fbs …then was slide kara Hk ~lktatsu. Then slide kara ex tatsue version sick as he walks forward about at least half a square and still gets ex tatsu reach! For gflip there’s a couple ways. I left off at having2 Hk buttons and tried plinking in training w meters off.
Never got to go farther but yes I would say it blurs the pwalking. I’ve always said F, D,F,D, HK GFLIP has a different take off point. This that you speak of is tangible at this point. Its an extra timing variable as u know.

A pixel or 2 is good enough, just trying to find a way to cross up when i shouldn’t.

Oh ok. Ya know whats funny is that I’ve never really experimented with the cl.st.mk glitch. We have so many options in the corner I guess I just never got around to adding it. I’ve seen it but cant seem to find it anymore. You got a link?

i thought it would have gotten more attention than it did, but i guess thats my fault for not telling it all… but there are several uses for it including avoiding ambigs and hard to blocks. Anything that isnt meaty is suspect if you catch my drift.

It doesn`t work well against certain corner shit if Gouken has his back to the wall.

My cables came in so Im due for a vid…but im scared to go too in depth bc i dont want to see it patched out… so i try to be very cryptic about it. it doesnt work with Akuma its specifically Gouken and his hit box.

There are things you can use it for in the corner but corner is not required.

Well if they’re not patching Ryu’s cl.st.hk pass through glitch I doubt they’ll mess with this. I wish it actually made you switch sides though. Only way I see using it is like you said, to possibly avoid ambigs or if you know without a shadow of a doubt the opponent will reversal with a special. If they block or just cr tech you’re back at even and not on the offensive anymore. I guess its just one of those things…

You tried this on Cammy’s deep dive kicks yet? If we wake up with this will she whiff?
