Why doesn't CVS2 have lasting power?

They say you’re only as good as your comp, so be sure to look for it.

More importantly:
If you’ve learned the basics by now, you can look at JChen’s Systems Guide at GameFAQs for frame data. This includes stats on the properties of a character’s animations, including startup, recovery, cancellation, invincibility, range, etc. Info like this is needed to understand what works best for a character and how he plays. It seems overwhelming, but you don’t have to memorize all the numbers you see. Just toy with them a bit to get a good sense of how each character’s moves and mobile options work. This is badly overlooked.

Continue with training mode and reading specific character threads as usual, but while you’re at it, look for character exhibitions and match vids on youtube. Then practice the hell out of it.

Once you’ve learned everything about matchups, put a gameplan together. Form a winning objective both for each of your characters and each round, and compile a list of ways you can reach it. Modify it slightly for different matchups, considering every likely scenario.

PATIENCE.

;p

the old djb13 tutorials are good for beginners. if youre super new they will show you tricks that you might not have thought of, and that will expand what you are able to come up with on your own. also, pick c groove to start out with, im surprised nobody has said that yet.

Eh… I’ve never been a big fan of djb13’s stuff.

There’s a lot of fluff in his vids that simply will not work on a live opponent.

Anyway, yeah, read Buk’s systems guide (not James’… his is way too long, and for whatever reason, doesn’t have more useful information).

Also, don’t overemphasize the importance of RC. A lot of new players want to rush to learn RC, as if it’s the ticket to victory. It’s not.

RC, for the most part, is just one tool to use in footsies. Every RC’d move can get baited and punished just like any other move used in footsies. Know that. Look for ways to develop your overall game, and once you have some experience fighting against RC, then try to implement it into your own game.

Other than that, just play.

Wow, thanks for all the tips guys!

A couple of notes/questions:

  1. Good call on C groove. I tried to start with A, cause I heard it was all the rage, but I switched to C because I looked like an idiot flailing around trying to do customs  I figure I can go back and learn those later.

  2. I’ll definitely check out Buk’s and JChen’s guides. And yeah, watching match vids is always a good call.

  3. With the djb13 vids, is it obvious which things are practical and which aren’t?

  4. It’s good to know that RC’s aren’t vital for getting started. However…
    a. Is there a good resource for learning how to bait/punish RC’s?
    b. Once I’m ready, any tips on how to learn to RC?

For as “nice” as it looks, I’d say 99.9%+1 of dj-b13’s vids won’t really get you anywhere in real competitive matches.

start with K groove, imo…there’s potential bad habits in c groove…

Honda’s annoying ass command grab? How the fuck do you punish that?

Well, that’s one of the few RCs that has no real use in footsies…

RC Grab is hard as fuck to “punish” because it’s rarely used in any situation that allows for it to be punished.

It can be escaped, but not really punished.

You just have to know that the move is only really useful in situations where Honda’s opponent is recovering from something (hit stun, block stun, air flip-out, wake-up). In all of these situations, it is impossible to be thrown for 6 frames. This means that RC Grab is always escapable.

You’re not necessarily going to be in a good situation upon escaping the grab set-up, but this is SF… you shouldn’t be.

This is a different situation from just “fighting RC” though. For RC Grab to even be usable, Honda would have had to do something to get you in that situation (usually something that didn’t involve RC to begin with), so you’ve just gotta get better at fighting Honda at mid-range, to make sure that he doesn’t get you in a situation that leaves you susceptible to RC Grab.

I was getting into, but my local arcade then replaced the arcade board with the Tekken 4 board (to be cheap), then muted the game, after that they replaced the TV in it with a crappy HDTV without upscaling so now it looks all pixely. It’s virtually unplayable.

Cvs 2 i pretty cheap for both x box and game cube, a little harder to find on PS2, but if you want a world class 2d fighter for under 20$ cvs 2 can be had for under that at gamestop. Not trying to advertise or anything, but its one of capcom’s fighting masterpieces and it can be had for pretty cheap
