Ah, I was about to flip my shit, but at least this thread is still open.
I remember very well that KOFXIII PC review on PA, didn’t know it was Kuchera that penned it but after TB mentioned that Kuchera tanked PAReport at around 2:42:00 of Co-Op Podcast #68, I was able to put two and two together.
Yeah that was just…wtf? No warning or nothing just posted “closed” and that was that. An over 190 pg thread that’s been on going for half a year. The thread that followed #GG from jump and you just end it like that? REALLY? And that explanation he gave was weak because in the past the thread has been derailed WAY worst than what happened on the last page. But not once did he say anything. But now he jusg up and closes the thread. SMH. Also @bloodymess that “I sexually identify as an attack helicopter” bit was legendary lol.
It’s closed, many disagreed with the action but we need to get over it and put it behind.
Take the L, learn from it and don’t make the same fucking mistakes here. Stay on topic, stay civil and there’ll be no reason for this to blow up either.
This thread is about “Why does game journalism suck”, nothing more, nothing less. Let’s keep it that way.
I understand a lot of the GG thread posters migrated here and that the GG situation (which I admit I don’t fully understand) is connected to the topic of this thread which is the problem of why gaming journalism doesn’t satisfy gamers.
That being said please guys all feminist related shit is NOT relevant to this thread, lets try not getting this thread locked too, read the OP for those that haven’t and please stay on topic thanks.
Patrick Miller, one of the editors. For OZ’s sake though, copy/paste was some shits & giggle thing, do not go around bringing bullshit into this thread. Go take it to twitter.
I think one of the ways to discuss “why does game journalism suck” is by discussing “why do game journalists hate games so much.”
If you think about it, compared to perhaps 20 years ago, people play games more often today.
People spend time playing games that they can instead spend on media outlets such as CBS and NBC.
Seeing CBS and NBC and their hatred for anyone who plays games (for example: the recent CSI and SVU episodes regarding video games) is no surprise since games are their enemy and consequently anyone who plays them (aka gamers).
It’s not just one thing, the current state of the gaming industry as a business, the business of reporting on the game industry, the social, psychological, and economic landscape of gaming, among other areas of the entire gaming culture are what they are today for many reasons, but it seems a lot of the hate for game journalists and specifically their business and ethical practices (or lack of) is blind without undertand how and why things got this way.
I think one of the major causes of gaming journalism being what it is today is that in the 90’s it was still a budding business in it’s infancy so most game journalists werefans like first, and journalists second. However, over time as the culture grew so did the business of reporting on the culture, and that means more money, more publicity, especially with the internet boom, more competition, etc so over time many if not most game journalists especially the newer, younger ones went from being fans that happened to be journalists to journalists who happened to occasionally be fans. I do believe formal, critical, and objective reporting and evaluation of games are important, but that doesn’t give anyone the right to condescend to other gamers, a lot of these journalists think they’re “better” than the masses and that right there is a huge impediment, who the fuck cares about the opinion of someone like that?
Just because you get paid for your opinion does not mean your opinion is more valid than everyone else’s and until they learn that they will be stuck in their ivory tower. A lot of these guys remind me of all the republicans who are for cutting public programs and then have no clue why the poor complain lol, this “let them eat cake” attitude is pervasive throughout any culture really.
I thought this was an interesting part:
"‘Oh, a truly objective review, wouldn’t that be boring? Just talking about mechanics in a bland way?’ Only if you are a crap writer!" It’s an good point. While I definitely agree pure objectivity is impossible, resorting to pure subjectivity to make your reviews stand out just shows that you lack skill as a writer.
I always found funny that many people seem to think that a review can’t be objective.
Like if they are confusing what a review is with an opinion or with a critic.
