Again, not necessarily picking a side here, but that’s contradictory to what some other people have said – namely that newbs shouldn’t be shooting their mouth of/their opinion doesn’t matter in saying something is broken/should be banned or not.
There’s a difference between forum elitism and an actual arbitrary separation.
But there is a simple way to deal with this :
-“Newbs” play by their rules
-People that consider stuff isn’t broken/doesn’t need to be banned play by theirs
When this kind of division occurs, the majority often takes over
No need to have one side dictate how the other side should play
Not necessarily – if anything, its been “who’s the loudest takes over”.
Sentinel health nerf is arguably case and point for this. Again, I’m aware that Capcom technically said this nerf was planned prior to release of the game, but I’m sure that the initial noise about him still had a significant effect on that decision.
Even if in Sentinel’s case, Capcom mentioned that, in addition to the fact that is likely to have decided to listen to the outcry of people complaining, you share my point :
None of the rules or the way people have to play a game are decided by a higher authority except in the Smash Bros community.
It essentially means it doesn’t have to be done, like Amazing Ampharos seems to be implying for games that don’t support updates or patches
Just because Capcom patches stuff out doesn’t mean it’s accepted. Look at 3rd Strike, rev. B with the Urien unblockables removed was not accepted and rev. A remains the tournament standard (to the point where 3SO is based on rev. A).
I can give another example; Narutimate Accel 2 went through the same process with assists. In this case, though, it was the kind of thing that was literally OP:

It’s a little more serious in this case because without a set ban, the metagame would be wrecked due to one tactic. You’re still playing the game as it was meant to be played, but you have to negate a certain feature purely for the sake of playability.
Not to mention the fact that A2Gold and A3Upper weren’t received all that well either. Nerfing AC’s and removing crouch cancels didn’t really do anything for the community. The players are already used to the game that’s been released, so there’s not much initiative to switch.
because** It** doesnt matter, an missinformed and/or non educated opinion about any subject doesnt have any weight, its like someone who doesnt know or in the best case barely knows anything about physics starts saying something about how he feels that the M-Theory is wrong and should be dissmised
just look how scrubs and noobs complain about stuff that they usually dont understand or know how to fight
in BB for example i always hear how Tager is op and he should be nerfed (if you dont play it let me tell you tager is the resident low tier of the franchise) , i have a friend that its actually a good player over all, but it has a really scrubby mentality and a very lack of understanding on how fighting games work, he is always complaining about tager, saying stuff that he is to strong, that his command grab super shouldnt be invulnerable, etc, he does the same on mvc3, he complains about sentinel and hulk, he thinks that hulk is to strong and that his gamma crush is way too good and should be nerfed, or that is just ridiculous how sentinel is, that he has too much tools, and that its plain stupid that his air super goes through strom super (he mains her) and all of us know that those chars are very far of being Op with hulk being just bad, and that sentinel has a subpar mixup.
do you really believe that developers should listen to people who dont understand how the game works?
specially when they usually want to take away tools of the chars that they have hard time fighting, and note that usually this problems come from their lack of matchup experience and sometimes how the game works, and of course only but ridiculous buffs to their mains
if you start listening to people who dont know shit, you would end with a game wher you have some sort of limiter to the amount of hadokens that you can do in a row, zanguief throws doing tiny damage or being semi - auto techable, ryu and ken dp would auto track their oponent, blanka balls would take away his life when you do them, etc, etc
a real life example :
dont forget about the xbox cvs2, and iirc the gamecube one too
In that case it’s a little different because the PS2 version was the tournament standard, and that one didn’t get any tweaking. While I can’t say for sure how much the community would’ve accepted the game w/o RC’ing, there’s footage of top players online with the Xbox version, so apparently it wasn’t outright hated or anything. I kind of liked the CvS2 changes myself, but I can see why long-time players of the game would be miffed at RC’ing being axed.
iirc, the arcade version doesnt have RC’ing
I’d argue Metaknight’s dominance is no than 3rd Strike, Super Turbo’s messed up matchup charts in the previous years.
One of the dumbest reasons for people to ban MK was because he was too dominat in the tournaments. That actually has happen to Yun/Chun, they still dominate every tournament in the world. MK has to BREAK the game before he can banned, otherwise why ban him?
Oh I know, when I said tournament standard I had EVO in mind lol. PS2 and Arcade version were identical, anyway.
I wouldn’t play ST if it had random items that you can’t disable, just saying. Shit’s dumb and anyone thinking that sort of thing should be allowed doesn’t know what they are talking about.
In regards to O.Sagat, I’m not sure if there ever was a soft-ban, and soft-bans don’t even fucking matter, but the Japanese didn’t soft-ban (if they even did) O.sagat because he was too dominant (dhalsim is basically just as dominant against most of the same characters), but it was because they felt he took no skill to play. It’s really stupid, the kind of shit only retards on youtube would think, but I guess if it really happened… not only to mention that the Japanese LOVE to play Chun Li it seems, who is pretty damn piss easy to play relative to other characters. Not only that but dhalsim has some matchups that are just as braindead as easy as O.Sagat’s, and O.Sagat actually has quite a lot of hard, but not necessarily unfavorable matchups. And the O.sagat Dhalsim matchup is very evident of which character controls space better and is superior overall. So yeah the whole O.Gat soft-ban thing is just dumb.
Then there’s Claw. Everybody hates Claw. It seems similar to the situation with The Giants (though I’ve never played tvc) where he kinda makes you feel like you’re playing a different game. You can’t zone him unless you’re O.Sagat or O.ken, and that very likely won’t last a long time. ST is supposed to be a ground battle game, where air options are generally limitted and risky, but Claw skews that entirely. He makes the game play differently. Not only that but he kinds slaps the other player in the face with disrespect because it’s very easy to execute his powerful tactics but he demands so much from the other player. He can really make it seem like the better player didn’t win. Claw can be doing basic wall dives repeatedly while the other person is trying advanced dp motions and option selects. If Claw has you knocked down, you have to face a really annoying wall dive game 50/50 safe mixup, but if you knock him down he has a lot of wakeup options (but he does have a major weakness to holds or anyone with a bigger throw range than him). I think he can either be complete bullshit to deal with or a different test of skill, depending on who you play as.
Only an idiot would ever consider banning either of these characters, even though o.gat owns some characters easily (see nakamura vs muneo) or claw requires so much reactions and technical ability out of his opponent while he requires very little to use effectively, and he changes the way ST is played (despite also having a dominant ground game). Just my two cents on this sort of situation, it doesn’t matter if a character makes the game different or boring, it’s all subjective and only an entitled brat would think the rules should be changed so he can have fun. It’s not broken and it takes skill (yes Claw takes skill to play, despite all the things I’ve said). That being said, I really feel bad for Blanka players.
when I go round to a friend of mine’s place he fires up kof 98 and keeps picking Mary to do the overhead grab and the slide mix up. is it down to my lack of knowledge of the game that I have problems with it or is it generally considered a headfuck?
though recently I picked up krauser, good times.
Does it need to be one or the other? Seriously, I got confused when the A.I. did that, never mind casual matches.
I’m pretty sure the arcade version had it. Or at least I remember the DC version having it.
the dc version yes, but im almost sure that the arcade version didnt have them
But aren’t the arcade and DC versions running the same code on the same hardware?
…
The difference being ST is a fighting game…
